They actually address the midnight thing in the animated series on Max. It was originally said not to feed them after when the moon is in it's highest position but humans changed it to midnight. Presumably cause the moon would be highest at midnight like the sun is at noon.

From 1979 to 2010 I worked as a commercial and fine artist. I sold a 5x3 canvas painted blue with a red cirle in the lower right corner for $400.00 and through a gallery supplied a lot of pieces that adorned a hospital hallway. The choice of art isn't a surprise.
