Changing the Guard at Windsor Castle on 4 July 2013.
The Old Guard, on this day the Grenadier Guards, exchanges guard duties with the New Guard, 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, accompanied by the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards Corps of Drums.
When The Queen is not in residence, which is most of the year, the ceremony occurs in the Lower Ward adjacent to the Henry VIII gate, the public exit point from the Castle, at 11am daily. Otherwise the ceremony occurs in the Quadrangle adjacent to the State Apartments.
SENIORITY WITHIN THE FIVE REGIMENTS OF FOOT GUARDS
(Grenadier, Coldstream and Scots Guards were not originally known by these titles)
1642: The Scots Guards were originally formed under Charles I.
1649: Charles I beheaded, establishment of Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth.
1650: The Coldstream Guards are formed by Oliver Cromwell.
1651: The Scots Guards are disbanded by Oliver Cromwell.
1656: The Grenadier Guards formed to protect the exiled Charles II in Belgium, become the 1st Regiment of Foot.
1660: Restoration of the monarchy in England under Charles II.
1661: The Coldstream Guards disbanded (to break the association with Cromwell) and reformed on the same day, become the 2nd Regiment of Foot.
1662: The Scots Guards reformed, become the 3rd Regiment of Foot.
1900: The Irish Guards created, become the 4th Regiment of Foot.
1915: The Welsh Guards created, become the 5th Regiment of Foot.

+violinwesley It's quite deliberate; watch any Changing of the Guard and you'll see the same thing: at least one soldier without a bayonet on his SA80. Usually a senior NCO. He's the one with the bullets in his magazine!

+violinwesley he's a senior NCO. usually they don't have bayonets as on these guards as they go off doing stuff like checking clipboards and opening gates where a bayonet can get in the way. the comment from gavsky is misinformed. none of the guards have loaded magazines, though a supply is kept in the guardroom. even if they did you can still fire the rifle with a bayonet attached so it doesn't matter anyway

Very poor bugle playing indeed. I am very sad to see these once elite regiments looking so poorly turned out. The height requirement for the Guards was abandoned by the Labour party. The people who designed the uniforms many years ago knew what they were doing. The shorter Guards and officers look rather comical I'm afraid. Not at all imposing.

The Coldstreams are scruffy and undisciplined, bearskins too high , tweeds at different lengths , arms flailing about when marching . At 2:10 the Company Sergeant Major (CSM) is carrying a Pace Stick. Pace Sticks open up to a V at several fixed points like a large compass, which can be held by the waist and twirled to "walk" out the pace distances for various drill movements and to position guards at precise intervals. They are normally carried by Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSM - rank of Warrant Officer Class 1 - WO1) and also act as a symbol of rank. Given this Company Sergeant Major in the video (rank of Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) and junior to an RSM) is carrying a Pace Stick, he would be a qualified Driil Instructor, who are also permitted to carry Pace Sticks. WO2 rank normally carry the smaller Swagger Stick which doesn't open to a V.

United States of America We call it a pace stick normally high ranked officers have them. There's many different types brown, oak, etc and different lengths according to height and colour according to regiment. We use them to count paces for practice for parades and the high ranked officers carry them around it's pretty cool. hope that helps
