Thank you all so much for nice comments, I'm glad you enjoy this song as much as I do. I would like to add, that I was like 14 when I made this video and also that english is not my first language, so I apologize for any mistakes in the lyrics - looking back, I see that there might be errors in punctuation. Also unfortunately I'm unable to credit artworks used in this video, so I would like to give thanks to artists. Have a nice day!

Marillion had the more sophisticated lyrics. With the Album Misplaced Childhood they actually stole the thunder of their role model Genesis and topped the Charts.

I got introduced to this type of music and more specifically this artist whilst in high school through my best friend whilst living in St. Lucia ( home land). He's parents were originally from England. I've moved and I'm now 54 and when ever I play this song it takes me back to those high school days. Love this song. Fish, indeed a true legend.

First heard Marillion at a mates house in about 1985. I was 14. I’ve been a huge unashamed fan since (until Fish left anyway). Everything about them....the eloquence of the lyrics, Kelly’s amazingly distinctive keyboards and of course Rothery’s mind blowing guitar solos.

@@only-AtomicMoon hello my friend. I can honestly remember the day I first heard them. Starting hanging about with lad in my class. Went to his house and he put a Marillion cassette on, Script for a Jesters Tear. I sat there in absolute silence almost spell bound listening to it. Went and bought it for myself on vinyl. Would spend ages just looking at the artwork. Got Fugazi not long after that and so on and so on. Happy days 😊

@@traffic71 I can also remember the day I first heard them, we were with our class in a cabin in the woods and near a lake waiting for the bus to take us home. One boy had his stereo with him and we were listening to Misplaced Childhood for an hour or two. It was the best music I ever had heard. After that day I bought all their records until Marbles 2004. I even saw them in Malmö i Sweden, and one month before that I saw Fish and I took one picture of him when he was waiting to go up on stage again and he was watching me when I took the picture. I think that Steve Rothery is the best guitarist. 👍😄

I didn't see your comment before I posted something almost exactly the same about Steve being up there with David, word for word. It doesn't matter if it's repeated though! It should be said over and over again. I found myself wondering many times whether the two of them have ever met and I searched online for clues. They have but my memory is so poor I cant remember much of what I learned. Steve commented on their encounter in an interview, I recall that much and he spoke positively of the experience. It would be interesting to know what Gilmour thought of Marillion. He must have heard their music and I'd like to think he enjoyed it and was happy that a band he influenced was taking an unfashionable stance in the early 80s. I hope he was moved by what he heard and saw it as a tribute of sorts. There are many parallels between Marillion and Floyd, musically and socially.

I wonder how many people missed out on Marillion? I got turned onto them when Script first came out. I can only remember hearing Marillion on the radio just a handful of times. It wasn’t until Childhood was released. They played Incommunicado. It was late at night. Same DJ. That was back in the days when you called the station and got to talk to them for a request, but only after the phone rang for several minutes. WLVQ-FM 96 here in Columbus. Great memories 🤘

They opened with this at the Reading Festival, in '83(?). I had a bootleg cassette recording of their set from Tommy Vance's R1 Rock Show. I seem to remember the vocal was virtually inaudible until the second verse, which was presumably a problem with the festival sound rather than the broadcast. The whole set was great.

Came here after finishing a particular quest in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Loved this song as a 14 year old - had a C90 cassette which had this recorded on it over and over until the tape ran out. Was a nice coincidence that the helmet I was wearing in the game was almost identical to the one Fish wore when he was scaring the shit out of teenage fans during the last part of the song. Pretty sure the game devs were aware of the song, as you track down Grendel's mother along forest paths to her mossy home.

@@stewartsmart5481 crazy how forty years after we can still argue (politely) about just how daggy Marillion is or The The or genesis, even which Floyd track is greatest. You listed my favourites except all of shine on crazy diamond which is best as all one track, and the several species of small furry animals gathered together 8n a cave and grooving with a pict, and Alan’s breakfast which is fucking trip even now.

@@watleythewizard2381 totally forgot about allans breakfast as for several species it's class shine on much better than Stairway to heaven my opinion was more into hawkwind for a stone/trip Douglas in the jungle or valium ten if you have not heard check them out not been stoned since late 80s a grown up 52 year old now old bands are best, tull, uriah heep, floyd zeppelin, hawkwind, gong, caravan, Frank zappa at least they played instruments not like computer generated pish of today

@@stewartsmart5481 zactly, hawkwind and gong. Give me Calvert hawkwind for the trip, give me salmon rising for strange and trippy, gong and Camembert electrique, all truly unique and brilliant. Hawkwind is possibly the least recognised band for the amount of tech and technique it gave to music. Hawkwind and Moorcock combined to create something not heard. Still, it’s a mood thing. Shine On for mellow mornings, Sonic Attack for a busy day, maybe even Calvert solo during the day if it’s a silly day, iron maiden for the afternoon, Grendel at anytime day or night.... I do feel so sad for the younglings who have just shite and more shite fed to them as music, computer generated psychologically studied and commercially entubated garbage, and worst of all, they think it’s great and that’s it’s original, but all it is is Americanstyle psychological manipulation, exactly what hawkwind was battling against (and why no one knows them). I would have loved to have seen Grendel on stage, but I was maybe ten. Marillion were long dead by the time I knew them (well, fishless which is as good as)

Some said they followed genesis maybey I think they followed themselves a truly underated band who has continued I would agree that the guitarist is probably one of the best in the world good on yeh Steve
