Greta Gerwig is such an inspiration to film fans and aspiring filmmakers. I agree with her completely about the great Katharine Hepburn. She really was such a trailblazing woman and one of the greatest actresses ever. And of course, Carole Lombard was also amazing. Greta is spot-on about Howard Hawks, he really understood dialogue so well and was a master of so many genres. He was equally adept at making comedy masterpieces like Bringing Up Baby, Ball of Fire, and Twentieth Century as he was at making some of the greatest adventure films of the classic era such as Red River, Rio Bravo, and Only Angels Have Wings. Hawks truly was one of the finest filmmakers of any era. Greta Gerwig is an encyclopedia of cinema knowledge, and that love of it really shows itself in her films. Thanks for the interview, TCM/Ben!

Katharine, whom Greta cites as inspiration, had this to say in 1979, and it speaks today as well "I'm disgusted with the movies. Disgusted. Because they're kidding themselves into saying it's a sort of intellectual pastime. Bunk. It's 42nd street filth. Filth being sold for too much. And now its respectable to go and see them. And the critics, I think, have lost their minds."

Her words are so true and still ring out high above the voices today that call themselves "fans" of classic films. Such a disgrace to actors and actresses of the past. Their works still hold steadfast amongst the so-called "movies" of today.

Uh Greta, Don Lockwood meets Debbie Reynolds' character in her car as Don is trying to escape his rabid fanbase at the premiere. They banter, argue, and it ends with Don accidently slamming the door on his coat jacket, ripping it in half and her laughing at him for it.

The end; and i mean the last approximately ten minutes or so of said film - was rather impressive. But it was unfortunately too little too late to save what was sadly mostly a farce if not an embarrassment.

If she says that Carole Lombard and Katherine Hepburn inspired the movie "Barbie" then that is an insult to Lombard and Hepburn's acting ability, true talent, and careers. Those actresses should not be related to the "Barbie" movie in any way or compared to any "movie" they make now. Those women had character and respect for themselves and others. The class and gracefulness of women in films now, has gone out of the window!

@@joe_rockheadBy today's standards, I felt Barbie succeeded in being a fairly clever battle-of-the-sexes social satire. But imho the films today are too slick, dumbed down and corporatized to hold a candle to the films of Golden Age Hollywood. (And no, I'm not a Boomer.)

Definitely not seeing the Barbie movie. As someone who has been watching movies from the 1930s-1950s since I was a young kid, the movies out there now are, in no comparison, worth watching. Where are the good story lines and wholesome dialogue?

When did young Americans start talikng like that? With respect,a whole generation now do a whining jerkey upward inflection. Sound awful. They could take a leaf from the older stars mentioned here. In Greta's case she goes in and out of that sort of speech.
