Greta Thunberg and George Monbiot make short film on the climate crisis

Environmental activists Greta Thunberg and George Monbiot have helped produce a short film highlighting the need to protect, restore and use nature to tackle the climate crisis. Living ecosystems like forests, mangroves, swamps and seabeds can pull enormous quantities of carbon from the air and store them safely, but natural climate solutions currently receive only 2% of the funding spent on cutting emissions. The film’s director, Tom Mustill of Gripping Films, said: 'We tried to make the film have the tiniest environmental impact possible. We took trains to Sweden to interview Greta, charged our hybrid car at George’s house, used green energy to power the edit and recycled archive footage rather than shooting new.'

John Brown you really think having a diploma simply means one is actually educated (however you define that)? I’ve met many degree holders who I regard as either robotic, shallow or simply uninteresting people because they’ve just gone through the motions of formal education, never properly doing stimulating, fulfilling things for themselves because they think the only way to get a job is through formally studying for something they don’t really care about. I salute Gretas passion for raising awareness about climate change and campaigning for real mitigating responses by all members of society. She clearly felt it’s more important than a formal education. Just because she’s not in school now doesn’t necessarily mean she’s not being and cannot be as ‘educated’ as someone who has gone though the system!

John Brown Yep true. Well spoken in the lions den of fools. It took all these do gooders a 16 year old messiah to say absolutely nothing but we must panic, stop using fossil fuels while her network of people do just that. Bravo! Hypocrisy and capitalism is starting young of a global scale and all the feeble minded lap it up. You’re all jokers! She’s a puppet to get the commoner to submit while the elite continue to do what we are not allowed to do. Greta is showing mankind how they can’t think for themselves and need another global puppet. She should be talking to the rich as they are the ones that have the entitlement and finances to consume the most yet the common person will give it all up. Talk about weird science!

@@mars6905 It will be the commoners like you who will pay the most if climate change is not mitigated. And by paying the most, we can very easily imagine paying with our lives. Just look who is funding the think tanks behind climate denial. People like Koch brothers or Saudi fossil fuel billionaires, they are commoners as f*** . Wake up! If you think this movement doesn't aim at rich people and the governments in their pocket in the first place, then you simply misunderstood the movement. Or another option is you are a troll paid to sow confusion on behalf of the rich.

YES! “There’s a magic machine that takes carbon out of the atmosphere, costs very little, and builds itself. Frédéric Gadoury yes, that’s absolutely important. What I was saying was at first a direct quote from the video, and my response that it feels like so many people think in terms of human interference rather than the restoration of the Earth’s natural state. And the point is that the destruction of earth’s forests (past the tipping point when they fully die off and cannot be regrown) may not be reversible. No matter how we innovate technologically, we need to bring BACK the forests which sequester carbon. It’s a key piece of how this planet works and we cannot forget that.

Extrordinarily well done. Emphasize also that techno-schemes to repair the environment probably won't work (financially and thermodynamically), since they're what caused the problem in the first place (D. Montgomery [2012], etc.). That said, the problem with planting trees as a standard "financial scheme" (e.g., Ecosia) is that there's 𝙖𝙗𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙣𝙤 𝙜𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙚 that those trees will remain for any useful amount of time. Please be aware of this!! Also, Prof. Anderson et al. point this out, and Bendell/Read point out that groups like Ecosia alone may ultimately enable increased denial by the top 10%, who *are* the problem (Chancel/Piketty [2015]). What we need as a way to 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 with the facts and banish all three forms of denial. "Planted" - you mean "buried" ? If you are being buried you pollute the ground and help destroying the water in the ground for many years to come - before you eventually become just bones. If an animal dies - let's say in the woods - nothing will grow around that spot for awhile.

When I was in Primary school in Australia in the late 70s, early 80s each of us was given a small tree to plant either at home or on the school grounds. Each child was responsible for planting and nurturing it until it showed growth. There are over 400 million primary aged school children in the world. Wouldn't it be great if our Governments around the world started a similar program to educate our young people and start the process of rebuilding our trees. A small investment for a large return. Every seed planted would serve two purposes. The life of a new tree and the seed of knowledge in our youth to help make more environmentally conscious people in the world.

The rebuttal I'd like to see made is: Ok, you kids, if you go to college it will have to be a college within 5 miles of where you live. The computers you use will now have to be shared between 5 other people. Same for all cell phones. All electronic devices that run on batteries will be outlawed. Internet access will be limited to one hour a day. All food you consume will have to be grown within 5 miles of where you live. Same for the clothes you wear. All bicycles, skate boards and any other wheeled vehicle will now be equipped with metal wheels. Electric vehicles must prove that all of their electricity must come from a renewal source. Same for all home appliances. All gas or wood burning stoves, fireplaces, grill, etc are outlawed. No more flowers, grass or any other ornamental plants of any kind. All citizens of the world will be required to live in 800 sq ft, or less, and with at least one other person. No pets. All trash will be inspected by a governmental official before being discarded. No resources will be used to maintain parks, public buildings or public spaces. And that would only be the beginning.

Yes. Monbiot makes me uneasy. He clearly has an agenda, is trying to surf on Greta's popularity and is doing the video's message a disfavour with his patronising tone of voice. Pairing a popular young activist such as Greta with a respected academic such as Attenborough would make more sense in terms of covering ground, and the take-out from it would probably have more depth and solidity than this video's vague catch phrase devoid of any kind of concrete roadmap.

This is important. People must stop thinking that climate change is something to believe in or to not do so. Climate change is scientifically evidenced. It does not matter if you do not want to join the people demonstrating. It matters what you do to inform yourself about climate change and what you do to help solving a global problem politicians trying to orchestrate. What should you do? Learn, Watch, Share. Independently from what you believe or not. Be social. Stop being harmful to people who try to make change. Be human.

Thankfully new growth in the north has kept pace and outpaced deforestation in the tropics. We’re losing biodiversity rapidly which matters but we ignore these facts and only focus on deforestation neglects the progress North America, Europe, and Asia have made reclaiming agriculture land and nurturing new forest growth to an astonishing degrees. This paints a picture of the world that makes a lot of people just want to give up. I think their hearts are in the right place, but it gives fuel to the opposition’s fire when you leave out things like that. They’ll use that to say you’re deceiving people.
