Who knows what Greta is doing, travelling from one speech to the next. Hiking? Walking? Cycling? Probably not. Maybe she plants a tree or two whenever she takes a flight to minimalize her CO2 footprint. There is no way out of this dead end street. Every single one of us is involved. Everyone of us is keeping the wheel turning. It´s not "them". It´s us. You, me, everyone. So what are WE willing to do or do not.

@@willilbery6398 We all produce CO2. There is no way out. It´s not just corporations or "them" or "others". It´s us. WE decide where we spend our holidays, what we buy and consume, what we wear, what cars we drive and when, whether we take a plane or train, how much meat we eat or produce, how often we buy the latest mobile phone etc. It´s all about us. Every single one of us is responsible. We can´t wait for "them", bc that will be too late. But almost nobody is willing to reduce his/her own living standards. Instead they call for "them". "They" are to blame. And I think this is just not true. We could all stop eating meat right now. No problem. Or is it? That will have a HUGE impact on climate. We could stop using plastic and paper bags, stop wasting energy driving cars too often, stop buying things that are useless and just garbage the next day, stop buying goods from around the globe via internet, bc it´s so easy and comfortable, so creating more traffic, more garbage, and putting pressure on local companies etc etc. So much we can do NOW. But who is willing...? I am one of those who knows all this, but is too lazy to do a real change in my life. I am waiting for "them", too... ;-) But "they" will never come... or "they" may be aliens one day, who will clean up the mess we left behind, once we are done.

@@loveandlaughter1000 look I do all those things, I don't eat meat I don't buy plastic bags, I do all that but its not the solution it is too little too late if we had been doing all that back when we were first told the climate crises is coming maybe it would have been enough (but most people didn't believe in it because it worked for gas coal and oil if nobody believed their waste could kill us and so they made it worth while $$ for the governments to discredit & start forcing us in the wrong direction E.G. calling it climate change sounds quite peaceful and non threatening in comparison to climate emergency a much more fitting title) I still believe in all these little personal sacrifices of more than a 2 minute shower but the problem is much bigger than that. imagine a world where everyone didn't have to turn the lights off in rooms there not using because the power came from solar. the government could be there right now if they wanted but instead they pore money into things like adani that will course nothing but destruction most of the pollution in the world comes from big corporations that have plenty of money to give the government in exchange for immunity from tax, water constraints, not being allowed to tip chemicals into the ocean ETC

@@freshencounter Unfortunately I think UN-social media has a major part in making the lives of children and teens more complicated. Those of us who grew up without the internet and phones left school weekdays at approx 3:00PM and over the weekend and were able to distance ourselves from problems like bullies or other students or the typical dramas. But now kids are connected 24/7, they never get the opportunity to be away, they are constantly only a message away from many problems that can be so hurtful and compromising. And so many sites like Instagram and even Facebook have people presenting themselves living the lives they want us to see. But most kids don't possess the awareness that many of those people might be motivated by the attention and in fact, not as happy or successful as they appear to be. It is a reality that a lot of kids then strive to be and have what they see.

Media hype everything, but this is big enough without any hype. Thunberg is not saying the world is ending in 12 years, but she is saying we have 12 years to prevent a specific disaster (the likely consequences of passing 2°C of warming). At present rates, we are roughly 12 years from passing cumulative GHG emissions that (without negative emissions) are estimated to lead to 2°C of warming. The warming will catch up later this century due to the time lag. Check out transient climate response versus equilibrium climate sensitivity. If you're minded to lay into "estimated": it's all one can do, but there are good and bad estimates. The IPCC's estimates have actually been called conservative by climate scientists.

It's not the job of a 16-year old to give solutions. She's already doing far beyond her age and performing the task of those having power, clout and privilege by raising awareness and urging the governments to act out now. The solutions are already there, all we need is will power and collective action.

I love Greta, not because she is cute or precocious. I love her for her honesty and her bravery, possibly her prescience. Even if she only reaches a handful of "adults" and persuades them to some sort of action, her campaign will be fruitful.

E MCC How do you figure that? Do you even know the science? Do you even know what IPCC stands for? She did weeks to months of research! She gets it! The assholes that attack her, like you don’t have a clue what she knows. She may only be 16 years old, but she is wiser beyond her years than most adults in this field! People like you are obviously threatened by people like her. Get over yourself and actually research it a little before passing judgement! She is amazing, because she bluntly puts the truth out there with no reservations on hurting people’s feelings. You don’t like it? Tough shit!

30000 scientists have objected to the "science behind climate change". And btw what amuses me is why she doesn't raise awareness with Asian countries who contribute more to pollution than western countries. Nothing against her but it smells fishy.

@@bennu547 Greta doesn't claim to be a scientist and she doesn't make her own scientific predictions. She just tells everybody over and over again to listen to the science, rather than to her. One crisp winter morning in Sweden, a cute little girl named The Angry Beaver woke up to a perfect world, one where there were no petroleum products ruining the earth. She tossed aside her cotton sheet and wool blanket and stepped out onto a dirt floor covered with willow bark that had been pulverized with rocks. “What’s this?” she asked. “Pulverized willow bark,” replied her fairy godmother. “What happened to the carpet?” she asked. “The carpet was nylon, which is made from butadiene and hydrogen cyanide, both made from petroleum,” came the response. The Angry Beaver smiled, acknowledging that adjustments are necessary to save the planet, and moved to the sink to brush her teeth where instead of a toothbrush, she found a willow, mangled on one end to expose wood fibre bristles. “Your old toothbrush?” noted her godmother, “Also nylon.” “Where’s the water?” asked The Angry Beaver “Down the road in the canal,” replied her godmother, ‘Just make sure you avoid water with cholera in it” “Why’s there no running water?” The Angry Beaver asked, becoming a little peevish. “Well,” said her godmother, who happened to teach engineering at MIT, “Where do we begin?” There followed a long monologue about how sink valves need elastomer seats and how copper pipes contain copper, which has to be mined and how it’s impossible to make all-electric earth-moving equipment with no gear lubrication or tires and how ore has to be smelted to a make metal, and that’s tough to do with only electricity as a source of heat, and even if you use only electricity, the wires need insulation, which is petroleum-based, and though most of Sweden’s energy is produced in an environmentally friendly way because of hydro and nuclear, if you do a mass and energy balance around the whole system, you still need lots of petroleum products like lubricants and nylon and rubber for tires and asphalt for filling potholes and wax and iPhone plastic and elastic to hold your underwear up while operating a copper smelting furnace and . . . “What’s for breakfast?” interjected The Angry Beaver whose head was hurting. "Fresh, range-fed chicken eggs,” replied her godmother. “Raw.” “How so, raw?” inquired The Angry Beaver. “Well, . . .” And once again, Greta was told about the need for petroleum products like transformer oil and scores of petroleum products essential for producing metals for frying pans and in the end was educated about how you can’t have a petroleum-free world and then cook eggs. Unless you rip your front fence up and start a fire and carefully cook your egg in an orange peel like you do in Boy Scouts. Not that you can find oranges in Sweden anymore. “But I want poached eggs like my Aunt Tilda makes,” lamented The Angry Beaver. “Tilda died this morning,” the godmother explained. “Bacterial pneumonia.” “What?!” interjected The Angry Beaver.. “No one dies of bacterial pneumonia! We have penicillin.” “Not anymore,” explained godmother “The production of penicillin requires chemical extraction using isobutyl acetate, which, if you know your organic chemistry, is petroleum-based. Lots of people are dying, which is problematic because there’s not any easy way of disposing of the bodies since backhoes need hydraulic oil and crematoriums can’t really burn many bodies using as fuel Swedish fences and furniture, which are rapidly disappearing - being used on the black market for roasting eggs and staying warm.” This represents only a fraction of The Angry Beavers’s day, a day without microphones to exclaim into and a day without much food, and a day without carbon-fibre boats to sail in, but a day that will save the planet. Tune in tomorrow when The Angry Beaver needs a root canal and learns how Novocain is synthesized.
