This is not about taking photos on your phones, it's about saving our planet - why not pay attention rather than clicking your phone which does nothing positive for anyone. This young lady has something immensely important to say, listen and pay attention rather than rudely and irresponsibly taking unnecessary photos.

'(...) Once you have done your homework, you realise we need new politics. We need new economics , where everything is based on a rapidly declining and extremely limited remaining carbon budget. But that is not enough. We need a whole new way of thinking. The political system that you have created is all about competition. You cheat when you can, because all that matters is to win and to get power. That must come to an end. We must stop competing with each other. We need to co-operate and work together and to share the resources of the planet in a fair way. We need to start living within the planetary boundaries, focus on equity and take a few steps back for the sake of all living species. We need to protect the biosphere, the air, the oceans, the soil, the forests. This may sound very naive, but if you had done your homework then you know that we don’t have any other choice. We need to focus every inch of our being on climate change, because if we fail to do so, all our achievements and progress have been for nothing. And all that will remain of our political leaders' legacy will be the greatest failure of human history, And they will be remembered as the greatest villains of all time because they have chosen not to listen and not to act. But this does not have to be, there is still time. According to the IPCC-report we are about eleven years away from being in a position where we set off an irreversible chain reaction beyond human control. To avoid that unprecedented changes in all aspects of society need to have taken place within this coming decade, including a reduction of our CO2-emissions by at least 50 percent by the year 2030. And please note that those numbers do not include the aspect of equity, which is absolutely necessary to make the Paris-agreement work on a global scale. Nor do they include tipping points of feedback loops like the extremely powerful methane gas released from the tying arctic permafrost. They do however include negative emission techniques on a huge planetary scale that is yet to be invented, that many scientists fear that will never be ready in time and will in anyway not be possible to deliver in the scale assumed. We have been told that the EU intends to improve its emission reduction target. In the new target the EU is proposing to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to 45 percent below 1990’s level by 2030. Some people say that is good or that is ambitious. But this new target is still not enough to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. This target is not sufficient to protect the future of children growing up today. If the EU is to make its fair contribution to stay within the carbon budget for the 2-degree limit then it needs a minimum of 80 percent reduction by 2030. And that includes aviation and shipping. So around twice as ambitious as the current proposal. The actions required are beyond manifesto’s or party politics. Once again, they sweep their mess under the carpet for our generation to clean up and solve. Some people are saying that we are fighting for our future. But that is not true. We are not fighting for our future, we are fighting for every one’s future. And if you think that we should be in school instead, we suggest that you take our place in the streets striking from your work. Or better yet: join us, so that we can speed up the process. And I am sorry but saying ‘Everything will be alright’ while continuing not doing nothing at all is just not hopeful to us. In fact: it’s the opposite of hope. And yet, this is exactly what you keep doing. You can’t just sit around, waiting for hope to come. Then you’re acting like spoiled, irresponsible children. You don’t seem to understand that hope is something that you have to earn. And if you still say that we are wasting valuable lesson time then let me remind you that our political leaders have wasted decades through denial and inaction. And since our time is running out, we have decided to take action. We have started to clean up your mess. And we will not stop ‘till we are done. Thank you.'

Why has it taken a young lady like this to SCREAM CHANGE, I have to ask, why hasn't this ever been the #1 topic of discussion when I was growing up, maybe if we listened to the scientific evidence, we would be that more along in this progress that can't be done over night, but will take 20-30 years because the world leaders refuse to world together, I wish I had this young lady around me growing up, her word would possibly have spread faster, the point of her being 16 now and not able to vote almost makes me wish people who know change is needed now could vote, after all she makes a clear case, she reads and listens to the science, she is passing on what some scientist have said forever it seems and have quit their jobs becauae of their words and their evidence being fallen on deaf ears, and greed is as she simply states, is going to be the death of us all and this planet we need to surive of course is destroyed, I am going to push my children to be like this young lady, because simply said, she is far more wiser, then those who can vote now for change. I believe if we do start now, maybe we have a fighting chance, bring back the sixties, the flower children, the tree huggers, the scientists and their drive to make changes, maybe if we do, our descendants will have a world to live in and on, make earth and survival of everything on it a # 1 priority, NOT GREED, after all you can't take it with you when your dead, but you do leave this world for the next generations to come.

It was a topic covered by many science populists like the astronomer Carl Sagan in the 1970s. Yes this was crystal clear even back then. Ignored for the most part since he first spoke on it. [Repeated in 1990 video.]

Sometimes science is wrong. Example: the Geocentric Model. The Geocentric Model was not based on ignorance and superstition, it was developed by the most intelligent mathematicians of that era. Political science is and has always been a monopsony.

Try reading about the National Rural Electrification Act. It made personal windmill generators, Nickel batteries, & DC appliances *effectively illegal.* General Motors used to make these battery-powered DC appliances for farmers.

The idea of science based politics is interesting and deserves further observation but she is extremely agressive.
@camille9915
@camille9915 5 жыл бұрын
It's not aggression, it's necessity. She's demanding change from those that are supposed to make these policies and uphold them because the time to fix things is now and not enough is being done. And I agree, science should definitely be a part of politics and policy making.
@ianbrown7552

I did not observe any aggression in Greta speech; some humour perhaps. She is merely speaking truth to power. You say, "The idea of science based politics is interesting and deserves further observation....". The observation has been done, what we need now (or was needed 20 years ago) is action.

I believe Greta Thunberg has Aspergers Syndrome, which means she sees in black and white, right and wrong, no compromise, which is what we need when it comes to dealing with the Climate Emergency. She may also be autistic, though I have not heard of this and I have been following her activities closely; this could also be a good thing in the circumstances.@@chrissame
