I feel and felt from the beginning, that Josh had such a rare range and ability all along. He just wasn't showing his full capacity yet. That's because he's not streaming like crazy. Its what we call reinforced falsetto, meaning he's 95% of the time in headvoice with distortion. Sounds huge but it's not that big really.

Listen to any good high power-metal scream or something coming from Judas Priest, same thing. The thing is that he stays in this set-up most of the time. And the mic and the effects do their job in terms of broadening the sound!
