I’m so impressed how you were able to not bash the headstock against the cabinet.

Haha! In this old studio the cabinets were actually a lot further away than they look. There was probably 2ft between the headstock and the cabinet. The camera makes it look closer.

The most pleasing clean tone (to my ears) is the middle position using both pickups together. Such a nice sound!
@LeighFugeGuitar

That's always a great clean sound on a Gretsch. I love the combination of the two pickups because you get the warmth from the neck and the twang from the bridge.

@@LeighFugeGuitar what's it like size wise? I've read it's considered a smaller guitar? I'm a bass player looking for an affordable 6 string to begin on.

You, (and JediMaster) said the two things I was going to say. The neck, NEVER sounded good by itself. But both pups on together, sounded amazing. P.S. If I had this guitar, (and I have the Juniour Jet preceding this model), I might be tempted to bypass the 3-way, and hard-wire it for both pups on, all the time. But that's just me.

Hey Andrew, Isn't it fantastic for the price? I was honestly blown away when it arrived. I had a feeling it would be decent because it's Gretsch and they always put out good stuff, but the price point made me think it might not be as good as my other Gretsch, or others that I've played... boy was I wrong haha. For such a low price this thing is awesome.

Hey! Thanks for the comment man. That's awesome, this one was the same, right out of the box it played great. I feel that for the price, it's hard to beat. I honestly think it's a good enough guitar for all occasions. I'd happily gig with one. I own another Gretsch worth double this range and it easily keeps up with it. It doesn't feel like a guitar that's as affordable as it is.

I haven’t tried those Danelectros but I’ve heard they’re really good players. I agree though, these Gretschs are a gem of 2020! They retail so cheap but playability wise the outperform their price point. The tuners aren’t amazing, but they are decent. Extra £50 for some premium tuners and you’re onto a winner!

It's good to see Gretsch starting to offer a broader range of choices for guitars in features, applications, colors, style, design, price-point, options, etc. Upping their game and getting serious about expanding their market. What benefits players benefits Gretsch.
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct John! It's so good that Gretsch are not only offering newer players an affordable way to get into the Gretsch tone ballpark, but they do it so well! This guitars pricepoint is somewhat deceptive because it plays like my other Gretsch which is 3 times the price. They've done well with this range and it's so cool to see brands recognise that the lower price end of the market needs good guitars too!

Hey Skandar! Great to hear from you. Thank you so much man, I really appreciate that. I had a lot of fun demoing this guitar and I'm really glad that you enjoyed it. I'm guessing by your comment that you will be playing a lot of genres too? This guitar is really versatile and it can do quite a lot. Not only does it sound good, but it looks great too! I own another Gretsch that's 3 times the price of this, and honestly, it keeps up. For a £250 (I guess thats $300ish for you) guitar, it plays amazing. It's so well put together. I've played guitars way more pricey that have had rough areas in the build quality. This model is fantastic. I still can't believe how cheap they sell them for. If I didn't know the price, I'd have estimated it was easily double that. What colour are you going to get?

I had one 30 years ago and his is way better. It should be i suppose. Look at cars! Talking about the low end of course. So, im not going to be as good as you but my son might be, since hes only 16. Over the years I have collected many U.S. Gretsch guitars and I can't get enough of them. Then they decided to not be made in the U.S. and that ended my Gretsch collecting ( prices for U.S. versions have gone thru the roof).... until...I decided to take a chance on one of the foreign versions. I found an electromatic that pretty much is the same thing as the one you just reviewed ( the scaled down version that is). It was one of the lower run ones with the dimarzio's from the factory. Payed $100 on ebay for it years ago. When it arrived I took it out of the box and was like...whoa!... this don't feel like a cheap gitfiddle. Then I plugged it into my fender half stack and it just absolutely blew my F'n mind. Needless to say, I now collect Gretsch guitars again, and from the looks and sound of it, this one will be my next one to add to the collection. Nice playing by the way and thanks for an up front honest review.

Bought one in this same color . Killer looks and killer price! My one gripe : when you roll off the volume knob it doesn’t really “clean up” the sound. In fact, I would argue that the volume pot on this guitar is almost just an on / off switch . Zero sensitivity. Of course , I suppose the pot could always be upgraded?
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Nice! Great choice. The colour is amazing. On the review model the volume pot seemed ok, but I have heard from a few people who picked them up that the issue you describe was present in their too. I wonder if it was perhaps a bad batch of pots... but as you said, that's a very cheap mod and upgrading the pots on a lower priced guitar is an upgrade that really opens up the tone.

Just bought on at an incredible price $440 as to the RRP $620 AUD. I love all about it but worry aout the tuners it keeps going slightly out of tune. Am taking the factory strings of tomorrow. They were wound all under the string hole and too many wraps. So I'll re-wind 'em with decent D' Addarios (10-46). Intonation took one screw with the stop tailpiece as the bottom four all registered flat. Now the intonation is perfect. New tuners , in the future could happen,

That’s a really good price! The tuners seemed ok to me when I had it for a few days, but it does sound like the factory strings weren’t put on very well. It’ll be interesting to see how it behaves once you put some new strings on it. Once they’re stretched in and settled it should work well!

@LeighFugeGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Angel! Thanks for the comment. The guitar is totally stock. Gretsch sent it to me a few days ago to demo it and in the video I'm taking it out of the box and plugging it right in. It's exactly as they sent it to me, even with the same strings that came from the factory. The only thing I had to do was tune it up (It was pretty close to being in tune straight from the box!). I didn't even remove the see through plastic film that is over the pickups or the pick guard. It's as new as it comes haha! The overdrive is coming from the Analogman King of Tone pedal that I was running into a clean amp. This is a great guitar. The Gretsch pickups aren't traditional humbuckers. They're more like the Gretsch Filtertron pickups but they are pretty fat sounding. You can easily get humbucker tones, but they have a little more top end to them, which I like. It's also really affordable! It's worth checking one out! Thanks for checking the video out!

Hi Leigh...with the 12" radius you mentioned, would that mean that the neck is suitable for someone with smaller hands and shorter fingers? I don't have access around here to actually try one out and was curious if it (the neck) is comparable to something like a Epiphone Les Paul Special II or a Harley Benton CST24? Thanks!! Good review BTW!! Peace
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael, Great to hear from you. Sorry for the slow reply. Good question. Typically the radius doesn't make too much difference for hand size. The radius refers to how flat the fretboard is. What would be more important for someone with smaller hands would be the overall neck thickness. I personally like thick necked guitars. I didn't feel this particular model had a very fat neck. It felt pretty slim and pretty comfortable to me. Maybe a little too thin for my personal tastes. I haven't played the Special II but I have played a CST24. I'd personally say this Gretsch is lightyears ahead. It's a similar price point but the quality surpasses the others in my opinion. If I had to pick one, I'd pick the Gretsch. It comes in 4 cool colours too (There are some links in my video description of the available colours if you wanted to get one). I loved playing it.

@LeighFugeGuitar

Hey Diego, Thanks for the comment and the kind words. I really appreciate that. On this particular one the volume seems to work as it should. The only thing I did notice was that it covers a lot of volume change when you turn it from 10 to 5, but from 5 to 1 isn't that different. It still works as it should though. I guess worst case scenario, if you didn't like the feel of that you could easily swap that pot out for a different one and that would cost very little. I don't mind that personally, the pot has enough movement in it to satisfy me when rolling the volume back a little. It works as it should. They're great guitars though. If you get the chance to try one, it's worth it! For the money, it's unbeatable. Its one of the best sub£300 guitars I think I've ever played. Its so well put together and plays so good! I try to be as detailed as I can so that whoever watches gets the best experience of the product. Great question. Personally, I find it stayed in tune well. I had that guitar in my studio for around a month before sending it back and I didn't notice any tuning issues. Wraparound bridges have some tuning compromises. Because of their design, you'll never get perfect intonation, but it's close enough that it isn't noticeable. If you play the same sort of things I play like rock and blues, then it's perfectly fine. The intonation is as close as you can get it on the wrap around and it does what you expect it to. The tuners felt good too, they weren't the best tuners, but it's a guitar for less than £300. You could easily spend an additional £50 on great tuners if you wanted to make that upgrade. The ones that are on there are fine though. They hold tune very well. Hope that helps!

Hey John, Thanks for your comment! Welcome to the channel. I found the pickups pretty good. I definitely thought the neck pickup was warm, but I wouldn't have considered it overly dark. I'd say they are right in the middle. They aren't the brightest humbuckers I've ever heard, but they certainly aren't the darkest. I think they're a great platform for tweaking. Plus. the guitar is so cheap and so good that if you didn't dig the pickups, it's so easy to throw a set of something you love in there too. I quite liked them. They've very low output and very vintage voiced. Do you have a newer Epiphone? I recently got a 2020 Epi LP and I found that quite muddy and dark in the neck position.

I own a higher end Streamliner (The G5439T) which is essentially the G5421 but with a Bigsby and slightly different pickups. The biggest difference between the two is the body construction and neck join. The 2210 is bolt on and the body is a slab body with a flat top... think Les Paul Junior, Telecaster. The 5421 is a set neck and a carved top, more like a conventional Les Paul style. Pickups and electronics wise, they're pretty much the same thing. So really, you can't go wrong either way. But who knows... The Gretsch website has a diagram at the bottom of this page: www.gretschguitars.com/support/specs-explained/pickups This shows the pickups on a scale. The Broadtron (The pickups for this guitar) are around the same power as a classic PAF pickup but with a bit more definition. To me, they sound like PAF's crossed with Telecaster pickups. Adam Whitley that’s a great and cheap upgrade you can do if you didn’t like the fixed intonation. I love the fixed intonation, it’s never been too much of an issue for me. When close enough is good enough... haha

@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yes! That's a great choice. Yeah it would be awesome for that kind of thing. If you're going to tune it down to C, you would need to put some heavier strings on there. From the factory it comes loaded with a set of 10s which is fine for Standard tuning, but you definitely want to take them up a gauge or two to play in C, but once it's tuned up it holds tune well.

@@LeighFugeGuitar I imagine a few minor upgrades - tuning pegs, nut, and pickups - and this thing would be absolutely incredible. I got the yellow/gold one? I'm not sure its exact name. The quality is really superb; no sharp frets, no fret buzz, the pickups are passable, the finish is even. Its surprising. Maybe I got lucky, but if they're all like this its seriously a great guitar for a crazy low price
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
@@vangoghsseveredear The tuning pegs for me were probably the main thing I would've upgraded if I was keeping the guitar (I had to send it back to Gretsch unfortuantely haha). I love the gold one, I think they call it Golddust? Or something like that. Yeah I agree fully, it's surprising how good it is considering the price. I think it might be one of the best guitars on the market for that sort of price. Pickups as a small price to pay. I personally didn't mind the pickups that were in it, but its an easy mod for anyone who doesn't dig them.

Hey! It will work in whatever tuning you want. If you want to tune it really low you’ll need to give it up proper set up and put some heavier gauge strings on, but it can easily handle whatever tuning you want it to be in.

@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, It's not as jangly as a typical semi hollow style Gretsch, it sits more in the Les Paul Junior ball park I think. It can do the jangly thing, because Gretsch voice their pickups in that way, but it doesn't sound like a typical, semi hollow Gretsch. Think of it as a Gretsch/Les Paul Jr cross!

what’s a *tuner* on an electric guitar? sorry to sound dumb lol is that what you use to tune the strings ?help
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
It depends which type you mean. There are two types. A guitar tuner is something you use to tune your guitar, it can be a pedal or a standalone/clip on tuner, which picks up the sound of a string and tells you what pitch it is. On the headstock of the guitar, there are tuning pegs (Also called tuners) which are gears you use to tighten or loosen the string. Hope that helps!

i have this guitar and i plugged it to some genius speakers and it sounds almost exactly like an acoustic guitar and its very quiet. is it because i dont have an amp or because the guitar is supposed to sound like that
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Hey. yeah the guitar won't sound quite right unless it's through a proper guitar amp circuit. I'm guessing Genius speakers are designed for listening to music rather than playing instruments though. A guitar amp is designed to really show off the guitar sound, home use speakers aren't designed for that so it'll be tricky to get a great sound from them.

how is the intonation with that wrap around bridge?
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, Thanks for the comment. I've found it fine. On this guitar the intonation was spot on out of the box. I didn't need to do anything to this, literally tune it up and play. It came really well set up. Every Gretsch I've played has been rock solid. I personally find that wrap around bridges never give me intonation problems. I own a few guitars with that style and it's never been an issue for me. They aren't "perfect" because obviously there are limitations to how much you can adjust it, but it's not noticeable to my ears.

I have this exact same guitar. I changed the tuners for some open backed Grovers I happened to have knocking about - there was nothing wrong with the originals, I just didn’t like the look of them. I love this guitar. I love it’s feel, sound and simplicity. The volume and tone work really well - there’s a treble bleed on the volume and the wiring is metal shielded. There is nothing I don’t like about it and it’s a real Gretsch for Squier money but better built and not even CV money. Get one.
