The only way to introduce him, “He is the holder of 61 NHL records.” Crowd rises with thunderous applause. Continues throughout accolades, number and name.

Wayne couldn't control his tears walking out. He and every retired player on that ice has every right to cry.

I know. I was there. A night full of emotion. Even though I didn't see all those stanley cups, it was pretty sad to be leaving that arena.

To think the NHL retired his number 99 just shows the amount of pure iconic greatness and respect he got and truly deserved.

I've heard this, I actually feel it's true. That when Wayne Gretzky was traded to the Kings from Edmonton. It changed the dynamics of hockey, period in California. Regarding new interest in hockey in the Western half of the United States. After a while it was not a matter of East Coast NHL teams having to trek all the way to L.A. just to play the Kings. Gretzky is a humble individual, as he was when he played. He never felt that it was "all about him", as players in other sports, such as the NFL, the NBA, etc. His attitude makes watching games in the NHL a lot more pleasant and enjoyable.

For a 6-year span (1981-1987), Gretzky averaged over 200 points per season. No other player has done it once.

@@nikkif6243 Cool cookie-cutter response, Val. Clever AND original. Mess captained the Gretzkyless Oilers to a Cup only a year after the team was put into a state of shock. On top of that, Messier was the Hart and Pearson winner, as well as the leading scorer in the playoffs, not to mention that during the Oilers sweep of the Kings, Gretzky was held to 1 point. Mark Messier was head and shoulders above Wayne Gretzky in terms of greatness. Ask the New York Rangers.
