It is not Mer job to reach out to Thatcher. She is the child and he is the father. She did what she had to and she made it clear that she would be open to a relationship. All he had to do was make an effort, she was his responsibility. I am like Mer, my father abandoned me at 8. After graduation I sent him a letter telling how I felt about him and I gave him the chance to start up an relationship. I forgave him. He still hasn't tried. I am not gonna waste reaching out to someone who wants to be closed off from me. Even his wife tries to reach out to me, kinda how Lexie's mom reached out to Mer.

She then couldn't handle it, tried to commit suicide, found out she was pregnant with Maggie, and took Meredith and fled to Boston. Through all of that, Thatcher put no effort in trying to get even shared custody of Meredith. In season 2 when Meredith shows up on Thatcher's doorstep, she asks why he didn't fight for her and he responds by asking if she needs anything.

Grey curse really works. Mer has her own long list of tragedies and even Ellis didn't have any better. And now Thatcher. ➡His wife Ellis cheats on him. ➡Leaves him & takes Meredith away. ➡Doesn't have a relation with Mer.(he didn't try) ➡Meets Mer again, who hates him. ➡2nd wife dies from hiccups. ➡He becomes an alcoholic. ➡Destroys his liver & gets new liver from Mer i.e. estranged daughter. ➡Midlife crisis in form of Danielle (his girlfriend). ➡2nd daughter dies in a plane crash. ➡Doesn't know his grandkids from Mer. ➡Now has cancer & is waiting to die in hospice. Grey's are really cursed.

She said to jackson his response wasn't helpful. A little untrue. As the daughter of an absent father i respect his answer. You don't know because the feelings aren't strong. There was no encouragement for us as children. I was given the impression that I wasn't important enough for him to care about me. So were jackson and meredith. Her ambivalence about him has always been completely logical to me, as is jackson's response.

Didn’t someone call her dad to find out where Mer was after Derek died and she just took off. Why would anyone call him if they weren’t in contact and he hadn’t been at the funeral? How would they even have his number? It seems a bit weird to mention him specifically back then and now just say they never had contact. This doesn’t feel like a well thought out story line at all.

It's not a competition, Meredith's dad was not there for her, he wasn't a father to her and instead chose to be a father to his other 2 daughters. He chose not to stay in touch with her up until Idk when and so to her it's kinda a comparable situation. She also did not say that her dad was as bad as Jackson's, she just said they both have horrible father's.

I've never quite understood the Thatcher hate. Didn't big Ellis essentially just take Meredith away from him. He could have dealt with their reunion better but by then she had decided that she hated him also his wife died shortly afterwards and he was rather upset. It doesn't seem as though Ellis offered him contact that he refused. He doesn't seem like a deadbeat to me.

There's no indication he even tried to get access to her or even visits. I'm sure Ellis made it difficult but any court would have given him at least visits. And then when she became an adult he had many many years to make an effort. She even opened the door for him, more than once. Even then he didn't. And was actively nasty to her some of the time. But mostly just ignored her.

She has never been good with emotions like that. Doesn't help the people she loves keep dying/ leaving her behind. Her mother, her step mother, Mark, Lexie, Derek all dead. Christina and now Alex gone, not dead but just not in her life. Not her people. Maggie she doesn't really have the history with, in some ways she is too bright and innocent and Amelia is just as messed up as Meredith. She has her own issues. So Meredith hides behind the doctor mask when talking about those who died.
