Greyfriars Kirkyard is a cemetery on the southern edge of the Old Town in Edinburgh City Centre.
Burials have taken place here since the 16th century. The kirkyard was involved in the covenanters and the signing of the national covenant in 1638, some 1,200 covenanters were imprisoned during this time.
The kirkyard is associated with Greyfriars Bobby a dog which lived in the yard for 14 years at his masters grave. A statue has been place both inside and outside of the kirkyard.
One of the most prominent and well known graves is that of George "bloody" Mackenzie, who held the covenanters prisoner and also was present at thousands of witch trials from 1661 to 1679
