Is this the most haunted cemetery in the world?
Greyfriars Kirkyard - People have been buried here since the 16th century. It was once the site of an outdoor prison and is known for being haunted, in particular by a poltergeist.
JK Rowling used its headstones as the inspiration for several Harry Potter character names, and it was once home of the now very Disneyfied Greyfriars Bobby.
But what is the history of Grefriars? Why was there a prison there? And what is the story behind all those ghosts?

This a great video Robert!! 👏Thanks so much for all historical information. So interesting! We loved the 1961 movie version of Greyfriars Bobby so it is exciting to see the area as you walk through! 😊 Kim & Brent 🇺🇲

Nooooooo - I saw the Disney film of Greyfriars Bobby when I was really small and apparently I sobbed for days. More than 40 years later, I still can’t think of it without tearing up! 😢😢 Edinburgh has such an amazing history - I’m a big fan of Ian Rankin’s Rebus books and would love to visit the city one day. In the mean time, your channel is one of those rare gifts on KZbin that is an absolute gift to armchair travellers like me - thanks so much!

I love Greyfriars on a nice overcast day. My other favorite is down the other end of the royal mile. The cemetery where Adam Smith is buried. It has some interesting people in there. First place my wife and I ever stayed in Edinburgh was across the street through Bakehouse Close.

Greyfriars...Greystoke? This is so freaking cool! And the walks are handi-capped accessible. Sweet. I didn't know that about the Harry Potter names. The methods taken to protect bodies from the Ressurectionists make me laugh since I am donating all of my organs when I die and then what is left will be donated to a place that uses corpses to train rescue dogs.

I did one of the famous Edinburgh Ghost Walks a few years ago now. Whilst it was very tongue in cheek and quite interesting to listen to the stories, including that of the grave robbers and Greyfriars Bobby, I did actually see a bonafide ghost at the end of the gated area (I believe this to be the oldest part of the cemetery). A white misty figure ran along the wall and vanished! I have no logical explanation for it and although there was a bit of trickery on the part of the tour guides, this was definitely not part of their 'act'. Nobody else seemed to notice it and it was quite far from where we were standing for it to be fake. I did try to debunk it, without success!

Ok first i have to admit i am highly skeptical by person, i hear so many stories about places being haunted think about the conjuring house or the Ram in, at the end of the line all of these places are debunked. So why would this place be any different? I know i would walk there like there is nothing going on, i would have a word with this "poltergeist Mckenzie" fellow wilst building a party tent in front of the black mausoleum and having a good time, heck i would take my sleeping gear and crash inside that place. Recording? Absolutely! Shane madej style from Watcher TV. Because this place is just like any other place, spooky? Sure because of the ambiance but nothing more then that.
