Mortsafes were a communal thing where people would pay a subscription fee for it's use. Most were heavy metal cages placed over a grave for six weeks by which time decay would make the body useless to science and then the mortsafe would be reused. the ones you shown here would have had coffins placed in the cage for six weeks then be buried in a regular grave.

Harry Potter films were absolutely brilliant. It’s great knowing the inspiration for many folks names in the film were sourced locally in Edinburgh. Thanks so much for explaining this background. I never knew any of that. You should visit Glasgow Necropolis. It’s very interesting. Me and my brother saw a ghostly apparition there in 1983. It was seriously creepy. In the 80s there was burning waste dumped nearby which smouldered into smoke creating a very eerie fog throughout the necropolis. It was like a Vincent Price movie set! Great to see you guys in Scotland. This is one of my fav channels on KZbin👏

Grimms: as always you go above and beyond when it comes to film locations and share the story behind the story and this is awesome how the author got inspired for all the names in her characters. I always asked myself this question and thank you for answering it!!!! It’s fascinating to find out that a cemetery was the author’s inspiration for the names!!!! I think due to being such an old cemetery the names are very peculiar and interesting!!!!!

the first person to be buried in a graveyard (which some folk mistake is the same as a cemetery) is supposed to be the place's guard. sometimes the story goes that the most recent person buried has the 'graveyard watch' until someone else is buried there. the folklore goes that you can substitute a person's soul from this duty by burying a black dog in the north part of the graveyard. these were known as Grims. it would be interesting if you could find that kind of information out while in the UK or if it's even available.

Legend has it that the land the cemetery is on was originally a valley. However due to the almost 1 million unrecorded burials the land was filled in to such an extent that the ground now forms a hill. "Bloody MacKenzie" imprisoned 1200 prisoners on the site too with many starving or being executed upon his orders. Furthermore, in 1998 a homeless person broke into the MacKenzie mausoleum seeking shelter from the rain. Upon discovering the coffins inside it is believed he opened them, however the floor collapsed causing the homeless person to land in a possible plague pit of rotting corpses. Since then, Mackenzie's evil poltergeist has allegedly attacked members of the public leading to bruises, scratches and even people being knocked unconscious.

The filming location for the Leaky Cauldron was in fact at Brough Market; where the railway lines cross over Stoney Street. The entrance to Diagon Alley, as seen at the start of Half Blood Prince is opposite Leicester Square tube station in Cranbourn Street. Personally I think the real inspiration for Diagon Alley was The Shambles in York.

Fun fact, they leave the gates unlocked all night. Very fun for late night walks after a few apple juices at the pub. Also, don't rub Bobby's nose! That's not a tradition, no one from Edinburgh does that, it's just something that was invented by some random tour guide a couple of years ago. And as you can see, it's done a lot of damage to the poor guy in a very short space of time :(
