Today a puppy earned Winston's support at the dog park by being friendly and respectful (and cute). A bunch of dogs were meeting each other and hanging out and a young Doberman Pincher came out of nowhere and started playing with the puppy (a Labrador/Husky mix). Within a couple seconds it got rough and Winston and I noticed something was wrong. Both of us started watching them carefully. Winston looked like he was trying to figure out what to do to help the puppy. The Doberman ended up knocking the puppy around and then he grabbed him by the neck and the puppy squealed. I loudly said "HEY", and he stopped. Then the Dobie immediately turned around and went back after the puppy. Winston hovered over his head and then barked at him and he ran off. I think Winston showed quite a bit of compassion.
Then the owner of the Doberman left immediately.
The lesson here is dog parks can be risky, especially for vulnerable dogs, such as puppies and little dogs. If nobody was around when this happened I believe something could have gone very wrong.
I observe dog behavior at dog parks and make videos of them having fun and goofing around and sorting out their hierarchy.
On the same token, I don't want to leave people with the impression that dog parks are all fun and games. Bad things DO happen.
My advise is to beginners is to careful, observant, engaged, and try to stay close to your dog.
For the most part, older and bigger dogs understand it is wrong to hurt small vulnerable dogs and puppies -- but you never know.
I recommend dog owners read the following article by the Humane Society of the United States, called "Dog Parks and Their Benefits" linked here:www.humanesociety.org/assets/p...
This video exists in order to educate people about dog behavior at dog parks.

Yeah, that's seriously how Dobies play, with their mouths. Mine sharks (what that dobie was doing in the vid) our other dogs and foster puppies all the time. That yelp likely wasn't from pain, but a "hey, stop it!" yelp, which is also totally normal for puppies playing and learning boundaries and bite pressure and limits. Winstons dad was also right to step in and tell the Dobie to stop it. Their job is to dog, our job is to teach them. Our dogs ALL get along great, but I still have to correct them from time to time. (like my little dude constantly trying to hump my old lady dog when he's feeling playful, and she's not in the damn mood, she corrects him, and if he doesn't stop, I correct him) Happy to have found this channel.

I agree! I love Dobes and that one looked just like mine playing -- the dog stopped after the yip/HEY, which is appropriate. Everyone learned -- except the Dobe owner, who absolutely needs to take that prong collar off at the park (and probably all the time). The black and white's owner needs to unleash before coming in, too: that poor dog's nervous on leash around the others.

I think both the dogs and the guy filming responded well. The dobie was likely playing, and the puppy made the sound it's supposed to make when things got too rough, and the dobie did let up. However, it did immediately go back in while the puppy was still on it's back. The puppy then made kind of a half-whine noise, and that's when the mastiff/pit barked and the dobie ran off. Was anything bad going to happen? Maybe/maybe not, but the mastiff/pit wasn't taking that chance, and I don't blame him.

@@jimsellingson that Dobe was a pup too, i bet 10-12 months old. They don't fully mature until about 2 years. But dobes are big clowns when they play. Never seen a mature Dobe bully a dog before, the ones I owned kept to themselves mostly with other dogs, just didn't pay much attention to them. But when they were pups, they were brats ya, but always playing.

My first dog was a husky/lab mix. Best dog I've ever had. She took more on the lab side in terms of looks and temperament, but she had one blue eye/brown eye and sometimes her eyes would turn a deep dark blue with a white circle in the middle. She was excellent with children and when we adopted her, she was already trained not to lick people. She lived for about 18 years.

I can't speak for all dogs but my staffordshire bull terrier didn't grow up around other dogs. He found me while he was 2 months and I never took him to a dog park until he was 2 years old. Introduced him to other dogs and he had the time of his life. He never bark at people (I find it weird because he wasn't taught not to) unless it's a playful bark when he's playing with or when ghosts are in the house. He's also afraid to bite and when it comes to puppies he run full speed towards them, stop last second and just stare at them waiting for them to start the play crouch. I raised him on non verbal commands and didn't discipline him for being a puppy just trained it out of him. Sorry for the rave rambling.

Low key made me emotional, mastiffs get a bad rep. Winston was doing what he's bred for. He's a lovesick guardian. Looking out for the week. Made me beyond happy that he did his job and protected little homie. And little dude even have him a kiss afterwards. Winston is an amazing mastiff.

For some reason, this gives me a buddy cop movie vibe. Winston is the older season cop, and Huskador is a new young partner and throughout the whole movie, Winston ignores him because he just wants to retire. But near the end, Huskador is in some trouble with some bad guys and Winston comes running in and saves him. Huskador: "You big drooly bastard, I love you."

Thats an over reaction. If he wanted to hurt that puppy he definitely would have. Some dogs just play a little rough and dont realize it. We have a huge dobbie at the dog group i take my corgi and chihuahua mixes too and he is a total dream but he is very strong so we keep an eye on him but know he has no desire to hurt any other dogs.

Your dog Winston is such a good boy, I'm very impressed by his temperament! It only goes to show, there's only bad owners not bad dogs! You Sir are a good owner, and both your dogs are well behaved, even though your female Husky likes to press Winston's buttons! LOL

Much needed video AND ADVICE - it can turn so quickly if there is no human to make their pressence felt when a boundary is crossed. your winston was an ANGEL. My oldest doggy Rea has protected a number of vulnerable dogs - she just KNOWS when an unsteady one is around and 'hovers' watching - then - when things start to turn, she makes her pressence felt ..it has at times caused her to get attacked but she takes it while walking the vulnerable dog back to its owner - obviously i have at that point intervened. but humans have a responsibility to understand body language and chat between dogs to AVOID SIUTATIONS unfolding and to help condtioin appropriate boundaries between dogs at play.

Shadowboxe the Dobie is playing their favourite game , “ ,most of them are black belts” and they can spend hours taking turns to be on the bottom while the other one practice. I’ve owned 10 of them over the years and it’s funny if you surprise the adult dog on its back and a younger dog practicing on them ,the adult is looking up pleading that it’s letting the other one win .

Is it just me or do dobermans seem too rough playing with pups and older dogs?
@Acadian.FrenchFry

Dobies are pretty watered down now compared to how intense they used to be. They are still rough, but back in the 70's many had sharp temperaments and were not as friendly as they are now. Germany still breeds the more hardcore temperaments. American breeders have bred them to be calmer.

I remember the 80's movies used to always have them as super obedient but aggressive watch dogs.
@Acadian.FrenchFry

Yeah I remember that. Dobies were kind of the scary bad dog of the 70's. Lots of dog bites from them back in those days. Even my sister was attacked by a friend's Dobie we knew since it was a puppy. And my mom was also almost bitten from a Doberman and me too actually now that I'm typing this. Haha But that was in the 90's and we were on a sidewalk in front of someone's house. I just got out of my car when this Dobie ran up at me, but my boyfriend came back down the street and ran after it. I guess it startled that dog because he took off back into his yard. Irony is I worked with dogs for many years, but this caught me off guard and it was at night in the mountains so no real street lights. I could see the dog because their yard light was on. But once it came into the street after me it got really hard to see where it was. My boyfriend was walking back over towards me and heard the growling and saw me frozen by the car. I wasn't about to move, so I just froze and was hoping the dog would calm down once it smelled me. But my boyfriend freaked and ran at the dog in a very overly aggressive manner and I think the dog got startled and so it ran back into the yard. Barking and pissed off, but at least neither of us were bitten. I actually like Dobermans and have known a lot of good dogs. I grew up around 2 of them. 1 was a great dog with me, a red Dobie and the other is the one that bit my sister when she was 3 yrs old. All because someone was at the door knocking and the dog got over excited when no one came fast enough and redirected his aggression onto my sister who was lying on the floor watching TV. He nailed her in the butt and my mother came running out of the kitchen and grabbed a lamp and started to hit the dog. LOL She already didn't like the breed because she had a bad experience with her friend's Dobie coming at her and almost biting her. Anyway, I think because of those sketchy issues with the breed back in those days many American breeders watered their temperaments down through breeding. If you still want that hard 70's Dobie you gotta import the German lines. Otherwise American Dobies are pretty goofy and friendly. Still protective dogs, but much more of a social family dog now, as apposed to what their original purpose was.

Funnily enough my dog and I came across a youngish doberman on the weekend. My heeler didn't like it and kept showing it the side eye with some teeth. It keep coming back to push his buttons. Jumped backwards and slammed in to my legs twice super hard lol. Intense and clumsy.

Dobermans don’t play the same as other dogs. They are more rough and while they think they’re playing it looks like fighting. It’s their breed behavior and important they’re trained.
