A Neo-Mastiff Almost Attacks a Husky

Today we met a Neo-Mastiff and when he saw Winston playing with Neveah on her back he got aggressive with her. The Mastiff's owner and I told him to stop and he immediately stopped. Then Winston played with a Doberman and Neveah tried to dominate a Bully.

Thanks Gumby, it is always so great to see my favourite dynamic duo. Winston’s face just makes me smile so much. That Mastiff made Winston look teensy for a minute, then a minute later against the Boston terrier he looked like a giant. The power of perspective!

The Doberman’s play bows were cute. The mastiff was a beast and thought he could muscle in on the wrestling. Neveah had to tell him what’s up and both owners were engaged and managed the event. The little bulldog looked like Yoda, LOL!

Biggest Pet peeve is when I see a dog at the park with all kinds of gear on them… can’t imagine a t shirt and a harness and a prong all at once is very comfortable, especially if the dog is off leash already… as always so good to see Winston and neveah! :)

I usually see doggies with shirts when they have just had topical medication, skin allergens, or hotspots. Pitties are super prone to allergies.

We did too, cuz our dogs started picking up bad maners/social skills from those interactions. During the Pandemic we saw lotz more of first time owners with cool high-intensity breeds too.

Man poor dog has a badly fitted prong collar on. Prong collars are only meant to be on during training, and they shouldn't be so loose. Also that Doberman is beautiful and so well mannered.

@Saskia K A prong collar is nothing like a bite, the prongs are rounded and are not sharp, it goes high up on the neck above the dogs trachea and it does not cause any damage. I've tried prong collars on myself and tugged it to make sure they wouldn't hurt my dogs, and it did not hurt at all. Normal flat collars are more dangerous and commonly cause collapsed tracheas. Prong collars were created and specifically designed to not hurt the trachea, they literally have trachea plates on them. Maybe you are talking about the fake cheap prong collars that have sharper edges?

@Saskia K Incorrect. Properly fitted prong collars are not digging into the skin and the dog is 100% comfortable. They are lifesavers for impulsive dogs. My dog is naturally impulsive and it's something that can't be completely trained out of him. If I use a standard collar and he sees a squirrel he will not stop trying to go after the squirrel and will choke himself to the point where he cannot breathe and won't stop coughing. He will also run into the street without a care of cars if we're on the sidewalk and he sees a squirrel. Harnesses also do not solve the problem because they just use it for more pulling leverage. I live in a neighborhood where many people walk their dogs and impulsive actions by dogs are not always acceptable. His prong collar allows me to walk him without him choking himself because he doesn't want to be pinched by the prongs. He will get to the point of feeling the prong and step back a few steps so there is slack in the leash. He obeys much better in public and most importantly LISTENS to commands. Without it, certain distractions cause him to "go deaf."

@Saskia K You're making an assumption that I have not properly trained my dog. That's where you're wrong. My dog is extremely smart and understands that his harness allows him to use his leverage when his impulsivity kicks in. You sound like a know it all parent that thinks their way of doing things is the ONLY way. You're being ignorant and don't know every type of dog or their training situation. My dog is EXTREMELY well trained. That's why I specified that his impulsivity cannot be trained out of him completely. Most of it has been. But professional trainers have commented that certain impulsivities cannot always be trained out.

@Saskia K You're also commenting not knowing the amount of exercise I give my dog. I guarantee you that my dog gets more exercise than yours on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Exercise is extremely important for dogs. But before you comment on a particular dog or owner, you should at least understand the facts before you start spouting off such nonsense based on assumptions.

Yay! Great to see the dynamic duo. I hope you're all good. I wonder if it wasn't your 2 well behaved dogs involved, that listen to you, whether that Mastiff would have done some damage? I suppose the Mastiff listened to his owner too. It's scary when they're so large. The doberman was sweet (shame about the ears though). Winnie was giving the young pup some behavioural lessons - he'll do well to learn from the wise one : ) Nevaeh humiliated that intact meatball at the end. He was so happy greeting her initially, his tail was a blur. He left with his balls but no dignity lol "Stop Nevaeh" cue her innocent smile : )

I see that Neveah starts the rough play with Winston, where she puts her mouth around his neck and then he plays and does the same, but he has a much stronger mouth so does that Neo-Mastiff. The neck I have read is not a good place for them, and can signal to other dogs that an attack could be taking place, it is not just a state of play. I saw how the Samoi came over to work out what was going on with Winston and Neveah, the Samoi left when it realised Winton and Neveah were just playing, but other dogs may not realise this.

Neapolitans are very dominant dogs and people assume they're lazy gentle giants. They're brutes. That husky was being rather rude to the ambull at the end and had a rather whiplash vibe the whole time. Neos don't play with weird vibes.

I would not take my Neapolitan mastiff to a dog park at all. You are basically asking for trouble. Highly protective guard dog around multiple other dogs I would not necessarily worry about how my dog behaves, but I would worry about how others' dogs behave. Around the Neapolitan mastiff. It really doesn't matter how much control you have over your Neapolitan. When this breed of dog thinks that it needs to protect you, it's going to do everything in its power to protect you, which includes ignoring every single one of your commands. Even if your dog doesn't start the fight with the animal being such a large breed and how powerful it is you're risking the Neapolitan Mastiffs life. Is an attack can lead to the dog being put down. 🤔 Which is kind of a stupid idea I would not want my dog put down at the risk of taking it someplace that never should have been.
