Mike Shinoda has been doing these rock/hip hop mashups his entire life, from before he started Linkin Park. This project, which resulted in the Collision Course EP, came about when MTV approached Jay-Z for the first episode of a new TV series. The concept was for each episode to match up an unconventional pair of artists, film them in the studio collaborating on creating a couple of mashups of their top hits, then perform them for a small audience of superfans of both artists. Jay-Z picked Linkin Park, upon which Mike said 'hold my beer', and when Jay-Z rolled up to the studio, Mike had already made not a couple but 6 complete mashups. They just re-recorded the vocals and that was it. MTV subsequently turned the first episode into an extended special, and cancelled the rest of the show, because there was no way anyone would be able to get close to what Mike had created.

Fun fact, LP put this gig on but only sold the tickets to certain fans. They put on their website a questionnaire asking what other artists people listen to, the people who said JayZ or rap were sent tickets to the event. They played the whole album. When I bought it, it came with a documentary DVD explaining all of this 😁🤌
@TeddyGreyOS7 ай бұрын
That's such a great idea! I don't think anybody does things like that anymore. Massive shame because that's how you attract the best crowds, the true fans!!
@lukestark37 ай бұрын
@@TeddyGreyOS yeah man, the LP website back in the early 2000's was just one of my open tabs haha they treated it like a clubhouse and all were welcome, I was lucky enough to see them 3 times before Chester passed, got to meet the man himself in 2014. Took me a while to be able to listen to them again but it's great seeing you react to this years later 🤘🤘

If I’m not mistaken, Jay z sold limited tickets to his fans, and lp sold limited tickets to their fans, and neither group knew about the other, and everyone went nuts! You can tell the Jay z fans because it took till like 3 songs in to finally jump because it’s not as big of a deal to them as it is for us metal fans!

Heck yeah mate! Love that you covered this! Need to do the whole album. Honestly I think a lot of metal heads (myself included) are big fans of rap - so when this collab came out I remember blasting it nonstop. Big part of my life. This was a fun reaction and so love watching your journey 🩷

"Collision Course" is such a cool collaborative effort. Only meant to be a smaller smash-up for MTV, Mike Shinoda took initiative to make it into something much bigger; an entire short album, and a fantastic live performance of it. There's a mini-documentary about it as well, which I recommend. Loved watching you rocking out to this!

I think we all start listening to music pretty genre specifically, like food I guess, to then branch out to other genres as we and our tastes mature. I wouldn't feel bad for that, I listened to nothing but Metallica for maybe 2 years until a friend introduced me to Wu-Tang, Souls of Mischief, TCQ, Biggie, etc. It's a good thing bruv, and represents someone passionate about music with the maturity to see genres are just a human and marketing construct. Good music is just good music.

Mike Shinoda! Any time someone can't remember his name, I always laugh. You should really check out Mike's hip-hop effort, Fort Minor. They've done a few full lengths, but Fort Minor really shines in an old Mix Tape with Green Lantern. The samples on it are out of control.

The fact Jay-Z did this with Linkin Park (and no other "nu metal" band) basically shows that Linkin Park have always been more than a metal/ rock band. They have been about the blend with hip hop from the start. They did not - like many other bands at the time - just make rock and add some mediocre raps and scratches here and there. They've always been authentic, that's why it sounds so natural and that's why Jay-Z worked with them. Check out "Reanimation" the remix album of their debut "Hybrid Theory" - it's a decent hip hop record with stellar collabs.

One Jay-Z line that I didn't catch at first and I'm not sure how well it translates to countries other than the US is "You some type of lawyer or something, somebody important or something" "I ain't passed the BAR, I know a little bit", the BAR is the test to become a lawyer.

The first part of this "song" is the instrumental for Points of Authority (Linkin Park song) with 99 Problems. They finish 99 Problems with the beginning of One Step Closer ending the "song" with part of One Step Closer. You can find the whole album on any site you can buy music from. You can also find the whole behind the scenes and full concert on KZbin. It is 45 minutes long and definitely worth watching. This album sounds the way it does because of Mike Shinoda. He has been doing mashups since he was a teenager with his friend Mark Wakefield (original singer of Xero). Linkin Park was originally called Xero then became Hybrid Theory and finally Linkin Park. Mark Wakefield left in 1998 because of severe stage fright which was going to lead to severe health problems if he didn't find something else to do. In March of 1999 they met Chester thought someone who knew the lawyer who tried to help Chester's first band (Grey Daze) get a record deal.

i got to see the collab performance as a triple encore in madison square gardens in like 2008 or 2009. Jayz was a encore guest not on the set list. I was stunned to see it. One of the wildest collabs of all time. It showed the diversity that linkin park could do with their music. simply stunning. if you liked this another that wasnt as great but was still pretty wild was linkin park x busta rhymes - we made it. I caught that one live on the projekt revolution tour. the whole crowd metal/rock/hip-hop was bouncing. ON POINT!!

Collision Course was the album namebtw ;) The Musicalbox most of us live or lived in is normal. when you love a genre and become a purist it's nearly impossble to get out... The best way is metal came from hiphop---> Linkin park, Limp Bizkit, SoD, e.t.c. Pop--> Nightwish, Arch Enemy, Evanessence, Whitin temtation and someday you realize it's not the genre you love it's what the music makes you feel
@Datyson999 күн бұрын
Okay why is everyone acting like this is a new thing Wu Tang Clan/Anthrax also Run DMC/Aerosmith while this is the best I have heard the rock community as always embraced rap and I believe it is vice versa for rap otherwise there would not have been the Beastie Boys, Kid Rock or Limp Bizkit. Also Linkin Park would not have Mike Shinoda or Rage Against The Machine would not have Zack

You got the vibe of this shit. Also I hear what you're saying about Jay but he's still top 5 for me, and as you can see here he is CRYSTAL CLEAR live. My goat is Em but he doesn't even sound a fraction as good as Jay live. Em barely even raps live let alone sounds good live.

14:11 Not just a drug dealer, also a pimp. He has talked about having prostitutes working for him which is part of the reason there has been news in the past about how he treats the women around him, specifically his wife's sister. On a happier note, there is a video that shows not only the whole album performance on stage, but a bunch of behind the scenes stuff as well.
@TeddyGreyOS7 ай бұрын
Another thing he took from Biggie actually. There’s never been any evidence suggesting he was a pimp, other than his word - which at this point is worth very little. He hasn’t ever mistreated his wife’s sister either… She once attacked him in an elevator but that was because he cheated on Beyoncé… Not sure which magazine you get your info from but it’s all over the place mate 😂
