Some very misinformed people banned trophy hunting bears (or at least tried to) out your way, even though the number one killer of young bears, is large male bears. So those animal rights people are actually killing babies. Plus trophy bears are generally the older ones, that are on their way out anyway. Lots of places, like up in Alaska, have had large numbers of people hunting bears, and the population has stayed very strong. I have an older Spanish 8x57 Mauser that shoots like a dream with the right load, and I'm hoping to shoot a bear with it one day. There's tons of black bears out east here. Lots of good fat on them too. Good for cooking, or rendered down, for almost anything.

Essentially, some bureaucrats and internet activists in Vancouver said "grizzly hunting is not who we are today in BC", without a thought to how this would affect... everything. In Sweden, they are trying to ban trophy hunting - not the hunting in itself, or of any particular species, but they want to ban the TAKING of "trophies" from the dead animal. I thought we were supposed to "use every part of the animal"? With this, you wouldn't be allowed to keep the head of a deer or pelt of a bear. I doubt it will pass though, I'm just mentioning it for the ridiculousness of the proposal, this is how some people with power and influence think.

Anti hunters and animal rights activists give nothing, to conservation. Hunters and fishermen/women put more back into sustaining a healthy ecosystem, than they ever expect to get back out of it. Unfortunately, this world is full of misinformed people.

@@Aethuviel the anti - trophy hunting movement is mostly just animals rights activists using people's ignorance to get their support. Even when the fact prove them wrong. Responsible hunting is the best form of wildlife management, this is a statistically proven fact.

Agree 100%! Here in BC out of Province/Country grizzly trophy hunters brought in a huge sum of money much of which went back into conservation plus provided a valuable service by removing elderly boars. Now that the hunt has been banned the province pays conservation officers to eliminate bears but only once they are a problem. I have no doubt that the grizzly numbers are actually down since this passed, but it will never make the news. It's sad to see British Columbia fail so miserably at conservation across the board. All time lows of moose, elk and salmon numbers yet they are increasing tag sales and even adding open seasons not to mention allowing increased commercial fishing despite horrifying data.

Morning from the south Okanagan. Hearty congratulations to the young lady on a grand first bear! That looked to be perfect shot placement too by the way. We should all hunt black bears as they're plentiful and quite hard on fawns and moose calves. If you've never tried Panko crumbs for breading, you really should too. Thanks and stay well folks.

Awesome video once again. Good on you Kez, nice shot. I grew up in a small logging town in Washington. When elk season came around everyone would pull their kids out of school to fill their freezers for the winter. I dropped out of school in the eighth grade and went to work. That being said I can't wait to watch and learn from the new channel. Keep up the good work Gridlessness family you are affecting a lot of people in a positive way.

Traditional schnitzel is served without sauce, just a slice of lemon. Having said that, my fave is Jägerschnitzel (Hunter schnitzel) or Zigeunerschnitzel (Gypsy schnitzel), each featuring a delicious sauce! Recipes available if you search those terms. Jäger has a mushroom, white wine based sauce, Zigeuner has paprika, tomato paste, chili powder etc. for some extra zip. Sadly for the man of the house, I don't think either contains much in the way of mustard. I'm sure a good helping of Dijon would work in either recipe.....

The course looks like an incredible way to learn. My daughter is dyslexic and despite my advocating strongly for her, she has been totally failed by the school system. Showing children a way to learn that they can see and work hands on with is massively beneficial to ALL. Good luck, I only wish someone like you had the strengths to set up something similar...... as for my daughter it would have transformed her learning.

She is absolutely a 'darling'! Canning up Spring Bear today, here in Montana just across the border. Off grid, no freezer, a $5.00 40 pound bag of water softener salt that is pure sodium cholride makes a super saturated 10 to 12 percent solution that is a salt brine. Heat the water near boiling, add salt until no more will go into the solution. It does an excellent job of preserving raw meat while it is being jarred up. Literature says weeks to one month. Seeing is believing and I believe it as I have confirmation. Pile up on this cheap salt. One 40 pound bag does up to 125 pounds of bear when submerged in 5 gallon plastic buckets....super cheap and useful trick for those of us off grid, or for when you freezer full of meat breaks, or when the lights go out.

A few years ago I stayed at a hunting lodge on Kennisis Lake near Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve. We weren't hunting. We were mainly visiting the Haliburton Forest trails. The owner of the hunting lodge was a city boy and wasn't a hunter himself. It was all new to him and he thought that if he was going to own the place he better get used to the activity. Just before we arrived for Thanksgiving weekend there was a young bear that had been coming onto his property and onto the decks of local cottages while people were eating lunch. The bear would not be scared off. It kept coming right back. The owner of the lodge ended up having to kill the bear. He phoned the local MNR, told them what had happened and asked what he should do. He didn't have a hunting license. They said that he was protecting his property and that he should either bury the animal or eat it. He ended up processing the bear and serving it to company for Thanksgiving dinner. He came down to our room (we were there with 4 other couples) and asked if we wanted to try some. It tasted to me like some of the best beef I've ever had. I little bit fattier than beef, but very tasty and enjoyable. One of the couples had been serving as missionaries in Congo for a few years and were home on a visit. They had eaten a lot of different meats over there. None of us had an issue with trying bear. All of us enjoyed it and would have sat down to a full serving, not just a taste, if available. If you're going to eat meat you better know where it comes from and how it gets to your plate. Beef, chicken and pork aren't the only meats out there. If you're going to hunt for food it needs to be done properly. There's an emotional toll in ending an animal's life in order to preserve and nourish your own life. To recognize that gives dignity and respect to the animal that has been harvested.

The bears seem to be doing well in Ontario. The spring season was cancelled in 1999 and reintroduced in a small way about 6 years ago. This year is the first regular spring season . The bears are now over 200km south of where they were, there was a sort of Trent Canal boundary as their south range, now they are as far south as London and Strathroy. We'll see how it goes.

I know for a fact bear jerky and stew off a berry/grain bear is spectacular eats. As a boy growing up I relished tales of the homesteaders and bush men. I remember an article once that I read that said if a man got a fall bear it would be a good winter. Because cooking fat was a true pleasure to have during the cold winter to fry leaner meats like deer, elk, and moose. Plus hare were generally easy to snare but offered little fat so bear fat was an all around good thing!

Discovery project sounds amazing. STOP. Put a bottle of mustard next to your plate. STOP. Rose does amazing work on her wood-burning stove, I have a hard time regulating heat on my gas cooktop. Thanks for sharing.

Keziah's first bear, she was so confident to take the shot. Jeff I've got to say those krain's are like rib eye in the sky, the brest meat are like steak. We don't have bear in Australia but I'm sure they eat well, as you show. Good to see your dad and mom, and the girls online business taking off. The outdoors for me has always been the best class room.
