Gridman: A Complicated Series and Where to Start

Gridman, he Baby Dan Dans! If you were to hear of this guy for the first time then it would most likely be in relation to the 2018 Anime Series SSSS Gridman. You know, that one really cool show that is most well known for a 14 year olds thighs. Yep, this is a Gridman video. This series came out of nowhere and dropped a banger anime, and revitalized interest in a strange 90’s show. It’s not entirely THAT simple, but it's how most of us came to know of our cybernetic, robotic, cyber man grid… grid guy… grid hero man guy … LETS TALK ABOUT GRIDMAN!

I might be the only person who cares to correct this, but SSSS.GRIDMAN was in the base roster for SRW 30 and not DLC (though, ULTRAMAN was). Other than that, this was a fun video. It was nice to see some of the lesser known parts of Gridman be touched on.

I like how the production team behind Syber Squad decided to go on for longer than the original Gridman, despite them having already run out of Gridman fight footage. They could’ve gotten footage from another Toku show, but they were gonna live and die by Gridman…for about 20 episodes without having a real ending.

10/26/2023 Major Update! Gridman Universe, and the compilation films, have finally been released on Blu-Ray and DVD in Japan! After a funny situation where a group ripped the film in 360p, the nice and clean 1080p versions are out! I'm not going to spoil anything, but it is an amazing film and a powerful conclusion to the SSSS series. There are little callbacks to Hyper Agent, but nothing massive, as it is a film for the anime. Give it a watch if you can! Hopefully in the future Dawn and I can make an updated Gridman video!

Fun fact: all of the characters from the second Gridman anime are all based on designs from Transformers: Shattered Glass, with the exception of the assist weapons, as they are based on the Age of Extinction Dinobots

I love Gridman anime to a point that I started playing Azur lane gacha game just to roll for Rikka, Yume, Akane and Chise. luckily I got them all. too bad I wasn't able to unlock their alt skins.

Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad is silly, but what helped it was Gridman was already a silly show and not short of corny moments so this adaptation still fit with the spirit of the original show. What did hurt it on the other hand was its cheap production. They use the exact same sets from start to finish, no new locations until the very last episode when they decided to make an outdoors episode, they barely could afford extras or guest character to the point that one recurring character was relegated to just her voice and never showing her face on screen ever. How did they manage to extend the series is beyond me.

Marcos, I'm surprised you have a video about Gridman. Let me give you a history lesson. I only know Gridman because of the American Adaptation of the live action series, Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad. Ominous. It was the series that Tsuburaya was involved with from start to finish. I only wish it got a proper ending. I did see the live action Gridman recently and it actually is good. The 2018 SSSS Gridman, I like it. There's also Dynazenon and I look forward to Gridman Universe. This is going to be such a ride. Let's Samuraize guys! But I prefer to say the words... ACCESS FLASH!

20:23 SSSS. Gridman also had a collab in another mobile game, Iron Saga. Sadly this one was skipped in the global servers.. so far.. But it had Yuuta, Rikka, and Akane as pilots, Gridman and another character as mecha units, and Gridman got his fully armored form as a retrofit(an extra upgrade if you maxed it out normally by using four dupes of it). Oddly enough, in JP/CN servers, that collab came after one for the Netflix Ultraman series. The one with just...dudes in suits, ala Iron Man. Which also mostly got skipped in global servers. All we got there was the Ultra Suit versions of two mechs unique to Iron Saga. Vassago, and Qing Long. They're cool, but how exactly does an Ultra Suit compete with proper mecha, exactly?

I will always say that you can watch the original show, but it has no impact on the anime series and the sequels to follow so you can skip it if you want--the only things you'd miss out on are homages or references.

Hyper Agent at least has two episodes which has major elements that become the focus of both SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon so I do at least recommend giving those two episodes a watch

Gridman is a Tsuburaya show, not a Toei show, so they couldn't. Plus, there's the fact that Tsuburaya Productions would be unwilling to give a foreign company any kind of control of their properties after their decades long legal battle with that Thai movie studio. Hasbro would have to deal with having Tsupro being heavily involved with a Gridman adaptation, Toei is hands off with PR, Tsupro wouldn't due to their past experience.

@@safruddinaly5822 then the way you worded your opinion is a clear misinterpretion of how any of the fan service functions into the anime. Comparing it to "normal fan service anime" is a vague term that has really no evidence or basis to back it up. If it relied on nothing but fan service it would either be extremely explicit or all references and no plot. Both of which are far from true when there's only 1 beach episode and the requirement to watch the original series to understand the anime is nonexistent. Just saying if you're gonna criticize something, at least put more thought into it

@@nunjairinun3526 I didn't wanna start a debate I was just pointing out the vagueness and the misinterpretion in this guy's criticism. The term "fan service anime" isn't even a real term used among anime fans and fan service is used in all sorts of ways so what does he mean by that?. I even elaborated by saying it's not fueled by adult fan service or fan service only fans would recognize so giving it that particular term doesn't make sense as a criticism. On top of that he says the animation isn't unique despite the cgi was purposely done to mimic suitmation which is unique when mimicking suitmation in animation is something that is either hard to do or not done at all. Point is if he's going to criticize something, he should of put more thought into it
