Gridman: “I missed the part where that’s my problem”

I'm glad you were able to actually able to talk about the original Gridman show in more detail whereas others have not. I hope you do the same when the Kamen Rider Double anime comes out next year.

Tokusatsu stuff is like an untapped market right now on youtube. I would eat all content talking about if it was in a similar format to this.

Yeah, most tokutubers don't really make video essays like this. And when they do it's usually a review of the show as a whole. The closest I can think of who does video essays for toku without it being a review is The Disney Brain. But most of his videos are Power Rangers. Aka most tokutubers don't try to be pretentious discussing the themes, metaphors, and symbolism in their shows to make them look better smarter than they are like some anitubers. And just want to talk about what whether show good or bad, what they like and dislike, and the toys.

My love for this series only gets bigger each time i watch a video about it, i honestly can't get enough of it, i even rewatched SSSS.Gridman shortly after SSSS.Dynazenon finished airing.

Ok this video slapping. Im very aware of Toku but only watched episodes of some here and there. I might gotta check out Gridman bc I didn't realize Dynazenon game from the series I thought it was its own separate thing

I've been watching weekly on Tsuburaya's channel. Gridman The Hyper Agent on Friday morning, SSSS.DYNAZENON on Friday evening. Still watching Gridman even though SSSS.DYNAZENON has ended.

The introduction was really long but that was probably unavoidable given the amount of context needed for the analysis. Once we get there though it’s worth it. This video has a very satisfying conclusion.

Hyper Agent Gridman isn't perfect, but Takashi is such a great villain. Glad he was able to get a redemption arc in the end.

Man, you said that you were late to jump into the show but I was also LATE to see this Gridman review myself. Talk about real-life business taking over my life. 😅 That being said, this has been an interesting insight that you gave from watching the original Denkou Choujin Gridman. I was impressed that you were able to draw out MORE similarities between both the tokusatsu and anime series, especially in regards to Takeshi and Akane as both show's side antagonists. Both of them wanted to escape from their respective real-life issues, both had an unfortunate encounter with the show's respective villains who drew out their worst tendencies, both encountered their ideal/real selves that they either threw away and/or could've been, and both ended up being the people that the heroes must reach out. In hindsight, both shows aren't actually just about saving the world, but also saving that ONE person who's been crying in the corner alone so that they could face the world themselves. The Gridman franchise was FULL of ideas and potential of story material to be further explored and could've been accomplished had it not been for the original show's unpopularity. Gridman was VERY LUCKY to have Trigger bringing back people's interest towards the franchise and by now, it's the ONLY moneymaker Tsuburaya have besides Ultraman itself. And to that end, I wish by the time Gridman Universe aired, it would open up a WHOLE NEW can of worms (Universe, if you prefer) with A LOT of potential for further Gridman Universe installments. The closest and most possible thing that I think they could do in the near future is to make a Gridman Universe toyline with Tie-in stories produced by Takara Tomy (since Gridman's original toys were produced by Takara and since that's also their business model with Transformers Generations/Universe toyline). I'd love to see them further expand Gridman's mythos by exploring his origins from the Hyper World, having crossovers with other mecha franchises, as well as to add more Hyper Agents and Assist Weapons for Gridman's roster of "Ultraman meets Super Robot" Heroes. I can see them having Gridman Sigma as the next anime series if they chose so and have Takeshi Todo taking the lead as he must help other people who met the same fate as him as he was also struggling to break free from the ghosts of his past. That would've worth a dime since Gridman Sigma had been pretty much obscure for the past few decades more than Gridman himself. Can't wait for Gridman Universe and I wish it'd air globally. 😁

Well, I just finished the original Gridman today. I really enjoyed it! But yeah, it is pretty dated and ridiculous at times. It's awesome to see someone who watched both do an analysis of what connects both of them together!

I can see that and it good 👍 and I like the highlights of takashi you did and you can see that grown up takashi as a representation of him taking up the mantle of Gridman sigma as reform antagonist turn hero

Ya know, i fully expected for you to mention the fact no one actually saw the original before making a video essay on SSSS.Gridman but still, makes me sad lol Rip the source material, no tokusatsu respect 👊

Gridman suffers from being too deep. It was already smart but it’s even smarter than you’d think on your first watch. Although this might hurt popularity, this makes me love the series even more.

I've only watched the intro so far, so I may add to this comment once I've finished the video. Personally, Gridman is one of my favorite Toku shows I've seen...although that's mostly limited to a few seasons of Power Rangers, Ultra Q, and Ultraman. But I wouldn't have known it existed beyond a vague memory of Super Human Samurai Syber Squad were it not for the anime! I'm glad you've made the episode guide because I wish I had that prior context before diving into SSSS.Gridman. I've been thinking about introducing it to some friends but it's kinda hard between Hyper Agent having nearly 40 episodes and some of the content not aging very well. edit: Forgot to mention that while I was aware of Ultraman, having been a lifelong fan of Godzilla myself, I never was really that interested in checking it out until Gridman got me invested in the giant hero side of toku. And since I wanted to make sure I had some context for later Ultra series, no matter how minor, I decided to start with Ultra Q and work my way up from there. So I guess I am a little biased towards Gridman when I say it's my favorite TV toku, as it was my gateway drug of sorts!

Wow… I’ve always mostly dismissed the idea that posits Rikka as being intentionally created to “look” like IRL Akane (I just personally chalked it up to anime character designs being anime character designs) but your analysis + research with the original show just changed my mind! Amazing video all around!!

In my perspective, I knew the story beats via watching the Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad adaptation when I was a kid.

Yo, what should I watch from Ultraman to get what you meant by the similarity between Yuuta and Gridman and some Ultra series leads? I was planning to watch the original and some others, but just to have a heads up, you know.

You didn't even mention Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad. Seeing as that's what ssss stands for, it would stand to reason that they may have taken elements from that version of the show as well. Spending three minutes defending yourself on the content choices you did make is tooo much. Ace video editing.
