Seven families share a common bond of their loved ones being killed or harmed by fraternity hazing rituals. According to published reports, there have been close to 80 college students who died in hazing incidents connected to Greek life in the past 15 years. Danny Santulli suffered cardiac arrest from alcohol poisoning after being pressured to drink the equivalent of 20 shots. Now, Santulli is confined to a wheelchair and has permanent brain damage.

While the reporter stated they were "forced" to drink the alcohol, the parents were more realistic and used the words "coerced" and " expected to". This message is an extremely valuable one for students who might pledge a fraternity. Poor choices and foolish decisions will always be made by people, but others do not have to go along with such risky demands. All of those boys could still be here if someone had called 811, and all of them would still be here if they had refused to drink. Rather than always focusing on the perpetrator, it's even more important to focus on raising confident kids who will think for themselves. My heart goes out to all of the parents here. What a senseless way to lose a child. 💔

When I was in college (1989-1993), I was in a sorority,, and I was also a little sister to a fraternity. I was never hazed by any group. I know for a fact that neither the fraternity or the sorority (any of them on our campus) had any kind of hazing activity. In fact, even when we went to regular parties not affiliated with the organizations where there was alcohol involved, there was a always a standing, spoken, clearly voiced rule that if someone felt like they needed to stop drinking, they could. We would play drinking games, but no one ever gave anyone a hard time about not drinking or stopping drinking. Our Greek organizations were not allowed to have booze at any event put on by the organization. I can’t believe that hazing is still happening because it is so dangerous not to mention how bad it is for the organization itself even if no one gets hurt permanently. It goes against the spirit and intent of the Greek system entirely.

I went to Pakistan to do med school. And they had hazing there. Some of the hazing was vicious. It was demeaning, physically harmful and embarrassing. Nothing was done about it until the principal changed. He sent a pack of 30 senior guys who were in final year every day, who would roam the campus and if they saw hazing they would stop the hazing, and report to the principal and that child was expelled. He also had appointed senior doctors both on the female campus and the male campus to update the staff about who did hazing in the dorms. And they announced it through their newsletters, to conferences and when they did their medical conferences as well. So that everyone would understand that he meant business.Needless to say hazing no longer exists in that university. It was a wonderful time for the newcomers. Because when I remember my time of hazing, there were a couple of girls that were burned and lost their hair in their scalp. So hazing should not exist in universities. Period!

This is where young kids need to understand how dangerous hazing is. It's very sad how this happens far too often and many young people die from these incidents.
@rakijr9176
@rakijr9176 Жыл бұрын
The problem is that most of these kids who join fraternities have very limited experience with alcohol. I would occasionally drink beer or seltzer in high school but never anything harder than that. My first week of college I went to a party and managed to down a little over half a liter of vodka in under an hour and blacked out. The next morning I couldn't even drink water because I would throw it up immediately and it felt like someone repeatedly took a baseball bat to my stomach. I didn't touch any alcohol for over a year after that night. Even though it might sound cruel, I think students who join fraternities should be required to drink until they get the worst hangover ever but nothing more. Nothing made me respect alcohol more than that one experience.
@wildhearts242
@wildhearts242 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I’m thinking most of these young men were sheltered. I had my first drink in high school (there’s always that one cool mom). So, I know immediately what shots of vodka can do! Before joining a fraternity they should have been exposed to liquor. These things wouldn’t keep happening. Sad.
@mst_angel437
@mst_angel437 Жыл бұрын
I agree with you. Had the exact same thoughts, I also had my first drinks in high school, although I'd never consider a frat in the first place I definitely wouldn't reccomend a sheltered person just jump straight to liquor like that. Just some beer would do the trick, I hardly even touch liquor nowadays.. too many bad/blacked out memories for my taste lol

How can you even encourage the drinking of alcohol? That's this issue here...despite all the facts we know about alcohol, despite all the deaths, violence , abuse , rapes, crimes and accidents we know have been a result of alcohol, you guys still encourage and accept drinking it. Our Creator did forbid alcohol for a reason and yet most choose to ignore His laws.

@@maggyhamada2560 because once you send your kid off to college, there’s no one to make sure they’re not drinking. If you’ve stopped them from consuming alcohol their entire life, they’re going to be curious and try it for the first time without your supervision and around folks that probably don’t care about their well-being. Best to educate them now before they hurt themselves later. I’ve grown up trying different drinks before, and since I went to college, I haven’t had a sip of alcohol nor had the urge to drink

In these situations I hold the victims responsible just as much as the ones who come up with these dumb ideas. Alcohol is not water and you can abuse it and put yourself in danger. we all know what too much alcohol does so they did it at there own risk. It's sad that those kids wanted to be accepted so bad they was willing to do anything. They could have said no and walked away but they wanted popularity and acceptance from the group over their health.
