So Today 18Jan2023, I saw your video for the first time,, on 16Jan, I changed the wick in my Kerosun heater model rMC95C6: It is obvious , I missed two pin holes... Thanks for your video. I inherited a RMC95C4 heater from my in-laws. The last time it was used was in 2009 during an ice storm and it's set with kerosene in it since. I did light it but it's burning unevenly. I found a new wick at Menards for $12.00 US so I'm going to try replacing it tomorrow. BTW last weekend I bought K-1 in Southwest Missouri from a pump for $3.29 a gallon. Even though the flame was uneven it did warm my garage nicely.

I’m able to get the pink kerosine at a gas station where the owner uses it to heat his shop - works fine. A fill of a five gallon container runs about 17 bucks. I make sure to crack a couple of windows in my shop just to make sure there’s fresh air flow. It might not get as warm as it would if I kept them shut tight, but why take any chances? First, thanks for this video...I referred to it several times while putting in my wick! There is one step that got me flustered - getting the wick mechanism to work after installing the assembly back over the center barrel. I found that I needed to simply run the wick-raising mechanism all the way up, then carefully - without disturbing the release ball, slide it over the barrel and down. It works perfectly now. Thought you might want to edit your video to include this if others are/were experiencing the same issue. Now, on to figuring out how to fix my igniter! I have just a bare red wire poking into the square chamber...
@airdave1953 Жыл бұрын
Update: I found this in the actual manual: 18. (1) Turn the wick adjustment knob to the fully raised position. (2) Pull lightly on the skirt of the wick to remove any slack. (3) Press lightly to secure the skirt to the retainer teeth on the wick cover. (4) You will need to hold the knob in the clockwise position to keep the wick raised. ※ WICK INSTALLATION TIP ** Lock the tip over switch (TOS) by inserting locking pliers or a clothes pin between the TOS plates, preventing the weight from triggering the TOS mechanism as you install the new wick. Install the new wick in the raised position. Remember to remove pliers or clothes pin before reassembling & lighting heater. 19. (5) Replace the wick assembly on the heater with the wick raised. (6) The wick adjuster knob will need to be positioned between the caution and warning labels

I have a very similar model and I have the new wick going up and down but the tip or emergency turn off lever don't drop the wick down out of sight so I fear the safety cutoff won't work. is this safe to try and light? And I hate to run it and not have that protection, SO BEFORE I LIGHT IT I WILL call around to see who might be able to figure why the those safety features are not working maybe the wick is not in right, I couldn't get that ring out that the wick studs go thru so I lined the studs up while the wick was in in highest position. Maybe Lowes or Home Depot where we bought it can ck it out or maybe a country hardware store around here has experience with them. I won't spend too much as the portable propane heaters do pretty good keeping us warm.

Pump kerosene is not what caused it to smoke. Your wick height is too high if it starts smoking. Unless it's old or been improperly cared for. The heater has no temp adjustment. It has one adjustment. The flame should be a quarter inch past the center plate of the burner. And you need to let it run out of fuel while it's burning every 3-4 tanks of kerosene.

These oils #1, #2, and #4, are different refinements of the same oil. #1 is Kerosene #2 which is Diesel fuel and heating oil for the home furnace is made by mixing #1 and #4. #4 is almost like tar. I work at Lowes and I sell the heaters and that gallon jug of kerosene also a 5 gallon black metal can of the same. I run one of those heaters in my garage and I buy K1 from the pump at the local station. The stuff in the jug that you buy at the big box stores might be filtered but that is about it. My heater runs continuously day and night till its performance drops due to carbon build up which takes about 3 days at which point I stop filling it and let it run dry so I can clean the wick. When clean the heater will consume 5 gallons in about 4 days at moderate temps of 32 to 20 deg F. I could not afford to use the expensive stuff in the jugs at the rate I burn it. All Kerosene is K1 just for informational purposes. Just as common diesel and heating oil are #2 oil. Heating oil is usually dyed and un-taxed and for that reason illegal to use in on-road vehicles. My local station has a pump for each. Thanks for another great video!

@GriffinBenchmark5 жыл бұрын
I tried diesel with the Kleen additive first. Paraffin immediately begin to build up on the wick and the flame began dying over time even after attempting dry burns to clean it. I then tried adding alcohol... no affect but the wick was already trashed. The only way to make diesel work, so I hear, is to use a 100% cotton wick. This is even a little controversial as well however. Mine bound a little as well... drive.google.com/file/d/1z4LWJ0FKVBCeu9AYEPdHD0Ks-BBliDuR/view?usp=drivesdk

I am very surprized you didn't clean it while it was apart, and i also noticed that the wire safty fence was not on the heater also. Just a sugestion, when reinstalling the wing nuts put one on then the one across from it to keep things straight then the other two in the same manor.

+Bruce Augustine Thanks for the advise Bruce. I actually did use the star pattern for final tightening of the wing nuts after they were all snug but edited a lot of that stuff out. The unit didn't look that dirty to me so I didn't feel cleaning was a necessity. The ignitor needs replaced now so perhaps an ignitor replacement and cleaning video is in order now. 😊👍 Thanks for watching!

Yeah, something is binding up. Without being there it's hard to say... You'll probably just have to tear it apart and mess with it untill you figure it out. Sounds like it may have something to do with a bent part or maybe the wick isn't seated right somehow?
@BEHEMONAUT Жыл бұрын
Not to tear you down, but I have a lot of experience trying to replace these things on these specific heaters, and I can't get it right no matter how hard I try, and all we use in the heater is kerosene. I look at how many of these things are on the shelves, and I cant help but think its intentional. Hell, you can't even comment on the "official" replacement video, probably because there's more than a few people just like me. I understand why creators turn off comments. I dont think a kerosene wick heater replacement video is going to draw a flood of unmanageable racist rhetoric and offensive language, but the excuse works well for dynaglo. I hope for all your sakes, I just somehow missed something important during the 20 or so times I have failed to properly replace the wick on one of these.

If you can't get that flame down to a half inch and burning cleanly, don't use it till you figure it out. I've never heard of this issue with this model before. I wonder if it's your wick?

@6:18 you don't have to replace that wic. it's in perfect condition. you just need to run 1 type of fuel through for a while.
@GriffinBenchmark6 жыл бұрын
Well, I appreciate you watching and I appreciate your advice. I do, however, disagree with your statement. 1. I did replace the wick. (see video) 2. Once wick was replaced, the kerosene heater ran perfectly. - better than new actually - Before replacing the wick, the heater would barely stay lit, it was oderus and generally ran poorly overall. Bottom line, this is something I wanted to do, it was a skill I wanted to learn, and now I can start fresh with a new wick that hasn't been experimented on with different fuel types. As a side note, this video has made me more money then my son paid for it when he gifted it to me for Christmas plus the cost of the new wick I put in it here. 😊👍

on the subject of diesel fuel. I'm very interested. I've seen other videos where it's indicated that 90% rubbing alcohol is mixed 1pint per 5gallons. did you try this method?

I did and the results were very unfavorable with these new wicks. This is one of the reasons I was changing the wick here in the first place The only time I've heard of alternative fuels working was with 100% cotton wicks. There are places you can order them online...

Wish my ugly “off-white” one was old style black like yours. Then it wouldn’t show any soot stains. I always carry mine outside to extinguish it. That’s the one bad thing about a Kero-Sun style heater...they can stink and soot up the white paint on the house ceilings. I also take mine outside to light it too. I notice a few puffs of sooty smoke coming off the top at the initial lighting process. Oh...and wow!!! You should really google a pump K-1 station. If it’s far away from you, you should invest in a 55 gallon drum and at least try to fill it up with what you can afford. I’m in the northern Maryland area and I used to have a station literally a 1/4 mile down our rural back road at the small deli/market. Well, the owner’s tanks expired that are in the ground and he can’t see the benefit of having it dug up and renewed. I see his point. So now I have to drive 7 miles to town to get K-1 at a gas station. It’s a separate gas pump style at $3.49 going as high as $4.00 per gallon. I’ve seen those pre - packaged gallons of k-1 at Lowe’s and Home Depot and you’re right. It’s over $8.00 a gallon of that type. Not even worth trying to heat any area with those costs. The only thing it would be good for at my place at those costs would be for power outages in the winter and no wood for my fire place. Again, research your area and the next time you’re out if it’s far, make sure to get that drum and fill it up. If it’s in your pickup truck, make sure to use good tie down ratchet straps. You want it snug in case you have to swerve or brake hard. Thanks for the video! My heater won’t stay lit now do to needing a wick replacement. I think I can handle the job. I wish I could find the extra that came with the box when my heater was new. But that was ten years ago. I’ve since moved and it most likely got tossed . Here it is unpredictable March and they are calling for 10 degree weather with wind the next few days and my K-1 heater stopped burning. Gonna have to get that wick replaced or my furnace will be on 24/7 just to keep it a snug 68 in here. Thanks for the great info!

Yeah, I found kerosene at the pump in my town finally. It took a lot of searching! Average price right now is probably $4/gallon. It's really unbelievable what a difference running one of these can make to offset our energy costs each month. I also love that they require no power to fully operate! It's to bad your little deli quit selling it... I do like the black color as well. I'll tell you what, I'd love to get an old antique one with a glass globe! Love those oldies! 😊👍 Thanks for watching and your kind words! Stay warm! 😊

1/2 inch flame height is too high and will consume kerosene faster than needed. Manufacturer states 1/4 inch is the recommended flame height.

This is the second time I've heard of one of them coming without a wick? I'm guessing it must have been a mistake though? I would return it or at least go back to the store where you bought it - or send an email if it was an online retailer - and ask about it... It should have come with a wick.

Everything works fine until I add the lower compression ring and then it’s too tight for the wick to taise and lower.
@GriffinBenchmark5 жыл бұрын
Check to make sure it's the proper wick for the unit. I would completely take it apart and redo it just to make sure nothing was bound up. If it still doesn't work you might try buying another wick all together? I have heard that some of them fit differently. Thanks for watching!
@scottgurtel48555 жыл бұрын
@@GriffinBenchmark I might just have to buy another wick then. I know I bought the right part number because I have two of the heaters and was changing the wick in both and the other one worked just fine. It just seems to be too tight to raise and lower properly once the lower ring is reinstalled on the one. Kinda sucks seeing that the wicks cost $10 each, but hey, I only paid $10 for both heaters at a garage sale so if only one works I'm still way ahead. :) Thanks for the reply.

If you have to use that heater for your main source of home heat... there is no way you could afford the 1-K, unless you're a millionaire... and if you were, you wouldn't be using a kerosene heater... LOL
@GriffinBenchmark7 жыл бұрын
Honestly, Lisa, you're right. Kerosene is very expensive... about $8.50 per gallon where I'm at. I would never attempt to heat my home with it. That being said, however, it makes a great garage heater for the few hours I spend in my garage each day. Also, it's a great alternative standby for house heat should the power go down for several hours or even days. Kerosene shelf life is great and if one were to store 50 gallons or so it would be great for emergency situations. Lastly, if I were a millionaire, I would have my own homestead really quick somewhere quiet with lots of timbered land and I would heat with wood and probably be a lot healthier to boot!! :) Than's for watching and God bless! :)
@GriffinBenchmark7 жыл бұрын
One other thing I would add here... I did find pump kerosene for $3.00 per gallon - same as diesel - but it's 2-k kerosene. Not sure if that would make a difference or not? Perhaps I'll try it sometime in the future? :) Thanks again!

If you had been using your heater with no problems (considering I have only used it one season now), and it's worked fine... what would be the first thing you'd check if you were unable to get the wick to light? I had been using it just a few hours ago. I noticed at that point, that it didn't light evenly.. The whole wick didn't seem to want to light, but I finally got it lit, and now, none of it will light... Got any suggestions? I'm cold :(
@GriffinBenchmark7 жыл бұрын
Have you tried dry burning it? - Burning it until the kero is gone and letting it just burn itself out? If so, it may have a build up of paraffin. If you'll notice, my wick looks completely black at the beginning of my video here... I tried to trim it and scrape it off but it's easier just to buy a new wick and replace it.
@GriffinBenchmark7 жыл бұрын
They say to let it dry burn after every other tank in the instructions to burn off all the carbon and paraffin deposits. The problem most people have with doing that is that it takes an hour to re-soak the wick to get it to burn again after it goes out.
