This exact heater probably saved myself and my family’s life in 1993. Get one, keep it maintained and keep 10 gallons of K1 kerosene on hand. Regardless of the price per gallon, the fuel will be worth its weight in gold when your power is off for 7-10 days and it goes down to 15 degrees overnight.

I agree completely. Store it away and forget about it. It will still work perfectly decades from now and is extremely valuable and inexpensive insurance. It amazes me that people think nothing of spending $2000 every year to insure their home but won't spend $150 over the course of 20 years on a backup heat source. This is assuming you live somewhere that gets truly cold of course - I wouldn't expect Floridians to purchase one of these except to guarantee comfort.

Several winters ago my husband and I bought this exact Dyna Glo 1000BTU Radiant Kerosene Heater. We bought it for a back up if the heater ever went out. We bought it at Home Depot. When we were buying it a lady came by with a flat loader shopping cart. She wanted to buy all the gallons of the white, less odor she could buy. She said that she lives up in the mountains and three years ago, they had a power outage that lasted three weeks. She bought this and placed it on the main floor. She had a split entry house about 4,000 sq feet on both the upstairs and the downstairs. She placed it next to the railing so the heat could go downstairs as well as the main floor where she kept it. She said that used it for the entire month, and the total cost to heat her entire home was only $60.00. Heating her home during the winter with electric heat usually cost them $300.00 a month. She couldn't believe how warm and comfortable they were using just this heater. My husband and I immediately choose this same heater and 30 gallons of clean kerosene. We took it home and tried it out. I never went back to heating my home with our natural gas furnace. My husband grew up in Montana and the used kerosene to light their home, and also heat their home. There never was any physical damage to anyone in the family. I gave the one to my daughter, and have one, along with the gallons of fuel for the year into our emergency supply things. This is also useful to heat a large tent if you happen to be living in a tent, whether it is camping or an emergency situation. This particular heater is the very best I have ever seen. I highly recommend it. I have included several cement flat stones to sit it on in our nylon tent. I highly recommend it. We live on the coast in NW Washington on Fidalgo Island. It gets cold and windy during the winter. I heat the house up and then turn it off..... Later in the afternoon I usually turn it on again to heat up the house to keep it warm during the night. I turn it off when we go to bed. I highly recommend this.

Marilyn, Not trying to be rude but is your comment supposed to be a joke or are you assuming that everyone here is stupid? First, a 10,000 BTU heater will not heat a 4,000 square foot house. Secondly, at about $12 per gallon at Lowe's, running just one of these heaters for a month would cost this woman over $600.00. These heaters are rated for 500 square feet and she would need eight of them to heat her supposed 4,000 square foot home. If she ran them day and night, she would be paying Home depot around $3500 bucks for a 30 day supply of kerosene. DO THE MATH AND STOP disappointing me in the uselessness of mankind. You probably voted for Hitler Clinton.
@familiarshadow1
@familiarshadow1 4 жыл бұрын
@@tribulationprepper787 Do you buy natural gas at home depot too in your comparison? Kerosene is about 1/4 that price if you buy it from an actual heating distributor. Also the conversion of square ft to btu depends on the insulation in the house and the temperature difference between inside and outside. None of which they provided. There's nothing wrong with not knowing this stuff. We're all born ignorant., but you should really do some basic research before you start raging at people. Try to treat people with respect. Even if they are wrong. Show the better nature of mankind and we can all learn from each other.

@@familiarshadow1 Sorry for whatever it was that I said. I can be irritating. I have one BBQ size propane tank. Several years ago I invested in an empty, clean 275 gallon IBC tote and had a fuels distributor, like you mentioned, come fill it. (half the Lowe's price per gallon) Now... several years later, I have left over about 190 gallons of yellowish colored kero which clogs the filters of my kero heaters with one use. Last winter, I invested about $100 in a Voronado brand electric, thermostat controlled, forced air room heater. I kept my house thermostat low for the Winter season and saved the cost of the new room heater the very first month. I still have that $1,000 worth of kero in my garage, stinking the place up. I guess I will just have to give it away on Craigslist just to get rid of it. Should work just fine for non wicking appliances or for diesel trucks. ANYTHING ELSE?
@familiarshadow1
@familiarshadow1 4 жыл бұрын
@@tribulationprepper787 sorry to hear that. 190 gallons is a lot of fuel. Usually if you're getting clogs it means that you have bad fuel, dirty tank, or it was contaminated with water somehow. You could ask a bulk fuel dealer if they can 'polish' your fuel for you (assuming there's nothing wrong with the tank). I probably wouldn't go back to whoever sold you the bad fuel in the first place if it's not a tank problem. You can also try running it through a diesel fuel filter before it hits your heaters and see if you have better luck with that. If it's too much trouble and you've found a better way to heat, you can go that route too. It's not for everyone and there are lots of options. Best of luck to you!

Since he skipped it, I will add that the siphon pump supplied with the kit works quite well. Close the vent on the top of the vent. Place the stiff side of the siphon into the kerosene supply, and place the flexible tube into the heater fuel tank. Pump the bulb to get the siphon starte. When the fuel reaches the level you want, open the vent and the siphone will empty itself. It works mush better than the funnel with no spill, as long as you dont let it overfill. One other thing...the igniter works well, but it takes a little time to work. Dont put it into the side of the wick, Put it on the TOP of the wick. I have been running mine for a while now, and I no longer smell it when it runs. I suggest that you run the first tank outside or in the garage so that the smell of the manufacturing oils burns off. After that, you cannot smell it anymore until you turn it off. As far as fuel, there is an internal tank, and there is a supply tank. The supply tank fills the internal tank. So you can first fill the internal tank, and then re-fill the supply tank for maximum fuel volume. You can buy fuel at Tractor supply stores, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes at about 10.00 per gallon. But you can buy a 5-gallon blue gas can (Blue for kerosene) and buy your kerosene in bulk from a gas pump at Sheetz Gas Stations. They generally have a kerosene pump next to the store door. That runs about $4.00 per gallon. If you want to inspect your fuel for water, pour a small amount of kerosene into a Mason jar and swirl it around. If there is water in the fuel, it will look like obvious, because oil and water do not mix. To learn how water looks, you can add a teaspoon of water to the mason jar (NOT THE GAS CAN) in order to educate yourself on how to spot water in the fuel.

This unit works very well kzbin.infoUgkxl2o1MQU4aMgmFk_cMqer4nH2ptpDEM6h Considering the price I paid for this, I didn't have high expectations, but now after using it, I consider this is a well designed heater. Do be aware that doing the dry burn on the wick as recommended (or at least every two tanks) is absolutely necessary to avoid an unclean burn, fortunately it's easy enough to do. I'm burning dyed K1 kerosene and do a dry burn every two tanks and this is working great. This unit will heat a little over the 500 square feet that it is rated for depending on the temperature. On days it isn't bitter cold this heater will do a fair amount more. This makes an excellent emergency heat source, and also in my situation, it is a little more efficient than the electric heat in the teen temps and below.

a very good video, I borrowed my friend's during our "Ice Storm" in 1998 and it was the exact model you have. it worked so well that I used it in our tent which covered our driveway and in -15 I could wash my car outside in short sleeves. I did start it each time with those batteries and they worked every time. during that time I lent it to my bro and while using this in his home the fire Marshall told him it was too dangerous indoors which I though was garbage for this to be used only outdoors. I will be buying another one and due to this video am glad I can use it as my area often loses power during the -20 winters here in Montreal thanks. NL

On the morning of the ice storm in 98, I drove from my home in Rouses point to Burlington looking at every Kmart along the way. I found one and purchased the 23K btu model and a kerosene can. Filled up the 5 gal can on the way home. ON the way back I stopped at my neighbors house and he asked if he could buy some kero from me. I said no but you can have half. Sometimes you have to help the neighbors. I have never seen and event like Ice Storm 98.

Thank you so much for posting this video! I have just received one of these to use in my drafty, poorly insulated, 1,000 sq. ft. rental cottage built in 1950 that is all electric. The main heat source is a window unit heat pump in the back bedroom - which made that room suffocating but did not heat the rest of the house at all. I supplemented with space heaters in the bathroom, living room and kitchen and ended up with 3-4 months of electric bills of $200 - $300 - and the house never got above 52F on any one day! I am hoping this will be a more economical alternative this winter - which is projected to be almost as bad as it was last winter here in Atlanta.

Unfortunately kerosene is not a very economical heat source and electric heaters are more economical for most of the USA. They do produce a good amount of supplemental heat however, and are a good backup in those cases where the electricity may not be adequate or reliable. A rule of thumb is if you pay $0.10 per kwh for electricity then it's equivalent to about $3.80 kerosene in terms of heat.

It's normal for the wick to have a narrow adjustment. Mine (similar looking unit but different brand) also has a flame coming out on top when it is adjusted at the lowest setting. As long as high setting gets a yellow flame and low setting gets about a half inch flame, you have the entire range.

great video I watched this several years ago and still like it but my friend bought a "Kerosun Radiant 140" in the mid 90's and I lent it to my bro. for our Ice Storm in Quebec in '98. the problem was the Firefighters said it was toxic and not to use it in the house. as you said with yours it only has a limited range for the wick but this unit seems to have an override so you can adjust it to any flame until it shuts off. one other thing I noticed is that I tested it out after it sitting for 20 years and filled the reservoir but emptied the tank and noticed the reservoir holds 2 hours alone so if you filled the reservoir then filled the tank to capacity it would last 14 hours straight not only 12!!

I used to have this exact model several years ago. it worked fine and the electric ignition worked fine but it always had an odor to it whether I used clear or red kerosene. the big round 23000 BTU Dyna-Glo or any other 23000 BTU round heater is better at not smelling although it uses more fuel but it will definitely heat a larger home.

What a great video. I bought one of these heaters because of your vid. Let me tell you about it. After the big flood in Calgary last summer I couldn't find a place to rent so I bought a 33' fifthwheel trailer to live in. It has 2 propane furnaces and a 5200 btu propane catylitic heater. I thought I was set for whatever winter could throw at me, but when the temp dropped to -31 in a zero visibility blizzard I found out that propane doesn't flow that well when I needed it the most and my furnaces wouldn't ignite. So I bought one of these heaters at Canadian tire (brand name Kero World, but identical to your Dyna Glo, for $260). I experienced the same problems you had, but thanks to your vid I found that if I light it with only 12 clicks up instead of all the way up on the wick, the flame will be almost perfect and I am able to adjust it just right within the limited amount of movement on the control knob. I was delighted to find that I was able to run the heater for 17 hours and still have some fuel (about 1/8) left in the tank. I started with one roof vent open for ventilation but after a couple hours the temp climbed to 95f and I had to open another one to let some heat escape. One thing I really like about this heater is that the heat output is very directional, so I have several options on where to put it as opposed to a heater that has 360 degree output that would have to be placed in the middle of the limited amount of floorspace I have available. I have the trailer in a wide open field on the prairie with no skirting or other protection from the wind and cold, and this heater keeps the place warm and toasty, all by itself, in the worst Canadian winter conditions. The only downside is that 1k kerosene costs $26 for a 2 gallon jug. Thank you for posting this high quality and comprehensive video. Now, could you do another on how to replace the wick? Thank you. I have since discovered that by having a troublelight in the propane tank compartment, the propane will work to 25 below. This is a work in progress. Now I'm going to investigate some insulation improvements. I'm glad I have the Kero heater for back-up when it gets really ugly, and I'm freezing my ass off cause the propane doesn't work..

Wow, a 5th wheel in a windswept plain in Canada. And I thought I had a cold place to live! There are charts regarding propane tanks and how many BTU/hr can be pulled from them vs temperature, but yes for a truly cold climate propane DOES NOT WORK. I'm sure you weren't the only one to experience that! Fuel oil is the way to go, or at least some backup heat source for the cold weather. In warm climates especially people probably don't have a reason to think about it, but propane behaves about the same as warm water when it's below -40. You could literally store it in a bucket! Glad the video helped. But $26 for two gallons? Ouch! I found a pump that sold it for about $5 per gallon here last year. Have you tried ULSD #1? I'm curious about that...
@knurlgnar24
@knurlgnar24 10 жыл бұрын
Kevin Parker Carbon Monoxide won't be a problem, but the smell might. I haven't tried it but haven't found any credible information as to why it wouldn't work. To be honest I'm not going to foul my wick to find out, but now that ULSD is out there and knowing that #1 is the same as kero, aside from a diesel additive package, it makes me wonder if it would work. It works fine for shop heaters and such but I'm hesitant to try it indoors. I don't use my heater much so I'll likely never need to replace the wick. But if I do I'll plan to make a video about it.

***** If we're looking at alternative fuels, what about jet fuel, jp1, isn't that the same as kerosene? While I'm here, does anyone have a suggestion for a cheap source for 1k kerosene? In Alberta? The manual is detailed and thorough on everything including wick replacement but I like to be shown, so hurry up and burn your wick out so I can see the vid. Just kidding. Once again, thanks for the prompt reply. Can you tell me what state you live in so I have some idea of what your winters are like?

Kevin Parker I accidentally let the heater run dry inside my house once already and while it did stink somewhat it didn't emit much CO and the smell was gone by the end of the following day. If you accidentally do let it burn dry, assuming my experience is a good example, it won't cause much problem. I wouldn't recommend it but neither my oversensitive smoke alarms nor my CO meter raised any concern in my relatively well sealed house.

I would recommend getting an extra wick or two to put back. If you get a bad batch of Kerosene or get water in it, you don't want to be trying to find a wick during a power outage/storm. And if you get a bad wick it will put out fume so strong you can stand it and start giving you headaches, etc. I get mine at Walmart, for $9. I do all of my heating with Kerosene and Wood Stove. I have one like this, but and older one, and one of the big round ones as well.

These are nice emergency heaters but I like the ones you can put a pot on top and fill it with water to humidify the air...does a lot to make you feel better in the winter and keep you from getting sick. Also you can actually cook on them. I use to put a pressure cooker on mine years ago and make stews that would last for days. You do have to be careful but that is true with any gas appliance...bar none! Electrical too! Always...you have to be safe as possible. My house is old and has 9 foot ceilings is 2 stories so all these things you have to take into account.

I just bought this heater and did the initial first burn outdoors as per the owner's manual. Burn #2 inside the house went very well and it burned properly for 4 hours. Burn #3 has been a disaster. On the lowest setting there is a yellow flame burning high over the top of the burner, with the knob setting to the lowest position. Looking at the wick there were a few bits of char on the wick that brushed off with a gently applied soft toothbrush. Today is Saturday so I can't talk with the manufacturer's customer service until after the weekend. I bought this on Amazon and if i can't figure this out I will return it for a replacement unit or refund. Your video was very good and while I did not have any problem with the ignitor working, this problem was unexpected and yours is the only good video on yourtube about this model heater.

It sounds like the wick is adjusted too high on your heater. As the knob is turned 'up' it ratchets such that it can only be turned 'down' by a limited amount. If the knob is ever turned all the way up the 'down' adjustment is limited. I purposely adjusted my replacement wick such that if I fully extended the wick the flame would be too high and act like yours does. You can try not turning the knob all the way up on startup and see if that solves your problem. The other more insidious possibility is if you have poor quality fuel. Fuel that is of too high a vapor pressure will flame up and you'll lose control of the flame height. Where did you get your fuel? You could try K-1 purchased from a hardware store if you're using something else as they are usually of better quality than some alternatives. I've found differences between various brands bought in 5gal jugs in HW stores too unfortunately.

Almost impossible to get anyone to put in a wood stove or an electrician up here with the building boom that's going on, so, I'm hoping this will do the trick. I just bought one of these at a hardware store in California as they were selling it as 'inventory overstock' because they're being outlawed in California. I guess it normally retailed for 230 bucks and with all the discounts and it being out of Box I got it for $35. The Fuel is about $12 a gallon but I've used it two nights so far and I actually have to turn it all the way down or almost off or it makes the room too hot that it's in so I might try using an oscillating fan to distribute the heat more evenly. It has a really weird start up and shut down procedure that seems kind of dangerous until you realize what to expect! Otherwise it's worth every penny!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Good deal fining on on clearance like that! In California I honestly don't see much point in owning one of these, but I'm not here to judge your particular use case. Sierra Nevadas? When it's negative degrees Fahrenheit and the power is out they're a butt saver, and they do give out very good heat. Older homes with marginal wiring is another use case I suppose - lots of house fires due to overloading knob and tube with electric space heaters. For fuel you could try purchasing #1 diesel or #1 heating oil. Depending on your source it may work and will cost less than half. Note that #1 diesel at pumps is usually at least partially mixed with #2 as they don't clean out the tanks when they switch fuel grades at the station or at the tankers. Heating oil from suppliers is usually better controlled. If it doesn't work just buy a new wick and you're off again.

I own one of these. It satisfies my needs. You may find that the igniter has a sweet spot. It when activated should glow quite brightly. Smashing it into the wick will result in a red glow and smoldering light after a bit. Smelly! As I stated should glow near as bright as a flashlight. A gentle brush at the wick should be all that's needed when the wick is clean. Longer though when the wick begins to foul. Clean then. My two cents worth. Enjoy. Tis the season.

I used one of these about 35 years ago and that worked great for the 3 years we had it. I live in an old house with not air or heat. Ordered this same one, as I was familiar with it and it came today (free shipping through Walmart). I gave it the one hour outside (brrr), it lit right away and I brought it in. It's heating up my home slowly but surely. You're supposed to have a low, yellow flame.

I have a Red Stone barrel style kerosene heater about 12,000 ish BTU not 100 percent sure but this passed winter was living at my buddy's house and it was close to the negative numbers one night and I wanted to try the heater so I turned the house heat completely off, fired up the kero heater. Cracked 3 large windows in the same room as the heater, waited about an hour before going to bed, LEFT THE HEATER ON til morning. Woke up, place smelt like kerosene but I didn't feel woozy or anything like that. No trouble breathing whatsoever, with ventilation that whole main floor was every bit of 70 degrees give or take. So I was very impressed. You can light cigarettes off of these too. CRANK THE KNOB though

Here in the south of Chile I am totally dependable on my woodstove which is the most common way of heating up a house! Many people also use keroseneheaters and the reason why I bought one this weak was because it is easy to rapidly heat up the house when during the day the house heats up because of the sun! In springtime or autum it is not efficient to heat up the house burning wood as because once your stove is hot the outside temperature rises so high you will have to open up all your windows not to sufficate of the high temperature! So then it is better to use a small keroseneheater for one or two hours or when you have to start a fire in the woodstove!

Good review. I've also kept kerosene heaters in storage for emergency heat for years. First was an upright convection type. Second I purchased (after donating the other to a needy couple) was this exact radiant unit. I've not really used it in six years because I installed a wood stove for backup heat for the central unit. (That, incidently, became my primary heat source shortly after using it.) The igniter on mine works perfectly. Bummer that yours did not. The biggest advantage with this unit is that it is comfortable to move around. The radiant unit was not. I don't run these at bedtime. About an hour before bed, I remove the fuel can and let the heater deplete the internal reservoir a bit. At bed time, I just carry the whole almost depleted unit outside and let it finish burning out on the porch. That keeps the smell out of the house. It does stink things up if you just push the extinguish button.

I have a Sears model like this that cost me about 40.00 years ago. Now this type run 150.00 and they are great. As for people being cheap getting the dyed that comment is bs. The government is greedy causing the dye to be put into off road because of truckers mixing it with diesel to save money, so the opted to put dye in it. It is still 1-K just has a little dye. I’ve used it in my heater and oil lamps and as long as you are not burning a high flame it is fine. The worst part is how K1 cost less to make and reflected that in the past, now it is more expensive. I can remember paying 60 some cents per gal when regular gas was about 1.70 a gal and diesel in the 1.20-1.30 range. Many people mixed 50/50 fuel oil to kero for their home heating also. It saved quite a bit in the heating bill, but too many companies couldn’t have that being they are all publicly traded and want more and more.

I'd recommend to not bother with batteries and just use a lighter, match, etc. These heaters are a little bulky so unless you plan to spend a lot of hours in your ice hut a 'big buddy' style propane heater may be more convenient. I like these heaters for emergency use as it's easy to store kerosene for long periods of time, while propane is a little more difficult unless you already use propane for household needs out of a 500gal style tank.

I appreciate this video, just to know that I did everything according to the manufacturers direction. On the cool fall nights, when the temperature is not lower than 40 degrees, I will use the heater to heat the upstairs. I am not ready to turn on the heat yet. I live here in MD about 25 min outside Washington DC and I found a Citgo gas station up the street that sells it at the pump for 2.99 a gallon. If you can find a gas station or buy it in bulk from a fuel distributor then that's you best bet. If you have to buy in in jugs at a store then it can be up to 4 to 5 times the price from a gas station and would defeat the whole purpose of trying to save money.

Interesting, but I am skeptical. @knurlgnar24

I am completely puzzled by that. There is absolutely no reason for a yellow flame as yellow is incandescent soot particles from poor combustion. The heater I have only produces soot if I turn it up too high, otherwise it is blue. Bizarre.

@@knurlgnar24 After firing my new heater up I believe you are correct that the flame should be blue. I don't know why the tech told me yellow even after putting me on hold and supposedly checking with a supervisor who stated that only manuals before 2013 called for the blue flame. Very odd indeed.
@knurlgnar24
@knurlgnar24 4 жыл бұрын
@@Rojo1044 I actually thought about this quite a bit since I wrote my reply and have a theory: Maintaining the catalytic converter hot enough (generally bright red) to completely combust the fuel and having no yellow flame is a balance that requires tight control of the wick. My suspicion is that they had complaints about the heater for this reason and changed the manual to state that yellow flame is OK resulting in a much wider window of acceptable operation to reduce complaints. To me this makes sense because while yellow flame is not desirable it isn't necessarily a problem. You can burn this thing for months straight with some yellow flame and aside from the small amounts of additional soot have no other ill effects. I've done testing on CO and yellow flame generally does not contribute to CO emissions - it does mean that you are closer to the edge of safety though so I wouldn't recommend it as a target. That's just my theory and may be incorrect. As an aside blue is not produced by incandescence (black bodies are incapable of producing a saturated blue light at any temperature) but by other mechanisms. Just a tidbit I find interesting about flame physics.

Thanks for this review. This type of heater would help were I live and we usually have more than one power outage during the winter. (My house is all electric.) When you filled it with kerosene I think you said you were using a lower grade first. I've read that will make it smell. Others tell me their kerosene heaters don't smell at all. Kerosene is more than $10/gal where I live so it would cost much more than my electric heat. :-( Pathetic that everything doesn't work right on it though.

Lower grade kerosene does smell more than pre-packaged ultra refined water clear kerosene at $10 per gallon, but it also costs half as much and otherwise works just the same. Given that my intended purpose is emergency heat I don't mind a little smell. For those with sensitive noses in the household I would recommend spending the extra to keep the family happy.

Chip Gibbons That is an awful lot of $$$ for kero. I live in northern Ohio and the price here is about $4.50/gal with taxes.

I have a similar type and a cheap Chinese green house type heater/stove. Both are excellent for both heat and cooking on. You just need to be a little more safety conscious with the Chinese one as it has no safety cut off if knocked over. I never use the electric ignition

Very good idea to light it outside first then carefully carry it indoors then I turn it off outside because it does stink. If you do that there great. Good video. Thanks.

can you smell the fumes or is it supposed to be safe to use in the house?

That is what I want to know to. I am trying to find something for a back up this winter.

rakesfunnyfarm First off, they are completely safe to burn in ypur home. Second, you will normally tend to smell the fumes with every first light. So every time you light it, it's going to put off some fumes and a little smell. I always set it outside to light mine and let it burn for about 5-10 and then pack it back in while it's still lit. (Perfectly safe, just be easy with it and don't drop it) Also, don't ever let any kerosene heaters burn completely out inside your home. Always try to fill it back up before it gets too low. These heaters are able to be refilled while still lit, just reach in and pull the tank out, no need for any adjustments or anything, just pull it out and go fill it and put it back in. Now, like he said in the video, it is always good to do what they call "dry burning" the wicks after so many uses. Normally I do mine once I notice the wick getting pretty black and when I go to do it, I let it get pretty low on fuel and take it outside and let it burn completely out. This not only cleans the wick, but it also helps with the life of the wick as well, helping it last longer. Again, DO NOT let them dry burn inside your home, it puts off a lot of fumes! I actually had a cousin to die from that very thing. He fell asleep before filling the heater back up and it burnt completely out and the fumes killed him. So don't ever dry burn one inside your home. I actually have mine outside dry burning as I type this. But anyways, hope that helps y'all.

@@MarkRiley12 Really? I've let mine run out many times indoors. Been doing it for 3 years. Never had a problem, but I've always had it sat under an open window, which is always open regardless as I like the air flow.

After you put the Kerosene in it did you wait 60 mins to light it ? You have to hold on to the knob when you turn it off so it doesn't snap back . Don't use it on a carpeted floor . The smell problem , a few bongers and you'll never know the difference or read the directions .

Yes, I waited for the wick to saturate and I do hold the knob when I want to lower the wick, but it is designed and intended to snap off so there isn't an issue in letting it do that when extinguishing. I also agree about the caret comment. In my case I have limited options but using a liquid fueled appliance on carpet isn't the best situation.

My ignition didn't work to well either. I had to bend the little elecrode wire closer to the wick. I have mine on a boat, use all winter passed F our years. Have it sat under porthole which is always open about an inch of so.

Interesting application, and fix. That's likely the issue with mine also. Since mine is for emergency heat reasons I don't keep batteries in it anyway.
