Grigore Pop-Eleches - Countering Authoritarian Regime Propaganda: Evidence from Russia at War

Dr. Pop-Eleches will discuss the most recent findings from the Russia Watcher project. The Russia Watcher is a survey project designed to collect high-frequency public opinion data in Russia. It was created in response to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine as a mechanism for understanding how public attitudes toward the conflict were developing and why Russians were continuing to support the war. Its high frequency allows researchers to observe the ways in which Russians react to events as they develop on the ground. This particular project evaluates the persuasiveness of anti-regime messaging within Russia.
Grigore Pop-Eleches is Professor of Politics and International Affairs at the School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He is co-director of the Princeton Workshop on Post-Communist Politics and his current research interests are in comparative political behavior with a focus on authoritarian and post-authoritarian regimes. He is the author of two books and over thirty articles in academic journals, including American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, World Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Quarterly Journal of Political Science, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. He is currently serving as editor of World Politics.
