I've lost count how many times I replay this video continuously... still can't stop.. Too precious, too breath-taking. A Baroque composer, Romantic arranger, and modern performer.... share the same soul, music has no time boundary, the magic penetrates through hundred of years ago, thousand of miles away...

@Mini Ma and why is that necessary not play anything that's not in the score?
@alainjames95565 жыл бұрын
@@JumpDiffusion I agree. That "not in the score" part ruined Mina Ma's comment for me. The other part - particularly the mention of the Lipatti version - is something I can feel deeply. Lipatti somehow is on some other plane. Some kind of magic - a transparency - kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppvJZ2Z7a557qbs But that is subjective - and I wouldn't want to diminish anybody's pleasure in hearing Socolov's interpretation.

Aaron Copland stated that this piece is the perfect example of a polkyphonic music, and the best way to listen it is to concentrate first in the soprano voice, then start again an concentrate in the bass. Only then, you would be able to listen the full sound emerging from the plyphonia. Mr. Sokolov, whom I had the pleasure to listen at the Festival of Tarruella (Girona), summer 2018, is a wonderful player for Bach, although not a specialist, for he is able to combine Chpin and Brhams, so on, with Bach; not many pianists could fornt that challenge. Fantastic pianist!.

Dio ci ha donato attraverso l'anima eccelsa di Bach queste note, strappate ai cieli e agli angeli perché qualcuno in questo mondo distratto ne potesse gioire. God gave us these notes through the sublime soul of Bach, torn from the heavens and angels so that someone in this distracted world could enjoy them.

This is definitely not the Busoni transcription, as stated above. This in the Kempff version (published in 1954 by Bote & Bock), which has different embellishments and a few different notes, and is 4 measures shorter than the Busoni transcription. The Busoni version repeats the last section another time, down one octave.
@Geopholus6 жыл бұрын
Yes, and it is metrically correct, which is what bothers me about the Busoni, with the rolled chords that take too much time, and destroy the beautiful phrasing of Bach's piece.

Sokoloff is an excellent Bach interpreter; he plays it the way he feels it, and the result is deeply moving. He is not distracted by cries of 'you're playing it wrong'. from certain quarters.

YT algorithm seems to now block my replies to threads. So I will reiterate lightly. I prefer this transcription, or Kempff's, to the Busoni because often times the performers who roll the chords allow this to lengthen the time between beats sufficiently to destroy the Balance/ symmetry, of tension / release that Bach wrote into the piece. When Bach writes repeats they usually necessitate the end of one phrase dovetailing into the beginning of the next. These are all perfect here in Sokolov. Some performers like Nikolayeva manage to do the Busoni even with her own free choice of delays and rubato, in a quite satisfyingly acceptable way in spite of her freedom in changing strict meter, perhaps because her delays are balanced by delays in phrasing elsewhere in the piece. She has always been a master at allowing Bach to breath in a totally natural way, even in as much as, a lot of the modern audience tends to take exception to anybody's rubato these days. That said, I agree with Vardan H about the richness of the Busoni, and how it helps to play on a (long scale) piano with clear in-tune harmonics on the low strings to avoid mud,... but then again Busoni was a little excessive, as though he doubted Bach's universality. Maybe Bach's music is rich enough in texture ,.. like sometimes it is better to be spare, simple and elegant.
