Expression is one of the key factors that makes the difference from a good pianist and a great one. Anyone can practice and play the piece 100% accurately, ask yourself why everyone's not a concert pianist.

it's supposed to be slow. it's lento assai, which means very slow.

Your teacher is wrong. Its all about expression my friend. This piece, to me, should come across as a chopin swaying and weeping and haunting and mourning. If you could recreate that feeling, you would be privy to a masterful interpretation and performance. Try it. And do please send me the audio and visuals. I'd al too enjoy it; and I'm sure chopin would be dancing in his grave.

without emotion and expression, the world doesn't need to has pianist. the expression is their sole authority.

Well, there's a point when one is being pretentious when playing the piano. The expression should flow naturally which develops throughout one's music career; it shouldn't be forced.

My teacher tells me off for trying to be too expressive with this one! Sokolov's version is all expression.

Performance is different from exams or learning repertoire. The performance is all about the expression the artist puts into the piece.

Wrong. Notation "assai lento". He plays it perfectly.

I generally hate Sokolov interpretations as he do a little too much in terms of "being in the piece" and exaggerate the piece traits. But I actually like this one.
