A nihilists playground. It reminds me of things like Berserk and Devilman, both works exploring the nature of virtue and civility beyond the confines of societal standards or religious faith. Both somewhat come to the similar conclusion that unrestrained ego, desire, savagery and cruelty, are what defines "monsters" or "demons", regardless of what sapient species they are (many monsters in fiction tend to be more animal than person, acting on instinct more than thought or emotion even when they are portrayed with elements of personhood) and the humility to recognize this and the will to hold onto virtue, to courage and compassion, the capacity for honor, wisdom, love and hope, despite the chaos and absurdity of the world around them is more important than the concept of "humanity", which is an inconsistent and unreliable metric for what is good, since it's also used to describe the flaws and vices people have, not just their virtues. "Humanity" doesn't make something good or bad and shouldn't be the standard to measure those concepts, as doing so can so easily be used to misguide and manipulate others into provoking and spreading avoidable hostility.

Grim Hollow: one of the cornerstones every DM should use for their campaigns. I'm pretty sure i have all of the books from this setting and i have yet to see anything that doesn't improve my games. If you're reading this and you don't want to run or play on something so gritty, that's completely understandable. The rules and mechanics will still improve your game from smaller common sense things like bleed condition that works the way you think it should to rules on how one might ascend mortal limitations to join the Celestial or Profane to subclasses that work in any setting. Get these books of you don't have them and show some love to the people that worked on them, they really deserve it.

That was my feeling too when I saw this. I emailed them and this was their response: “ The new versions will be built for the 2024 version of 5e. Whereas the current version of our books are built for the 2014 rules. Unfortunately there are no previous backer discounts.” I just emailed again to see if there’s any new content or just updated rules/stat blocks/etc. I’ve running a Grim Hollow game for over a year now and my group and I are a little disappointed and confused about this campaign too. I backed the monster grimoire campaign and I have the players handbook, campaign guide, monster grimoire, and monster lairs boxed set. It’s disheartening to know my investment might be outdated already.

@milesbergeson789 Damn...I was hoping it'd be more of a "Tasha's Cauldron" kind of expansion. Honestly I don't know if I'll back this new set. I did the original and the one that was gonna focus on the viking group? Name slips my mind atm but yeah. Well, on the bright side, even in 2024, we can still use our content for the most part. I had backed Aetherial Expanse and another group for Crooked Moon, and by God, I'm using them lol!

It's not just because of 5.5. Ghostfire said they're doing this because the Grim Hollow we have now was made as their very first project when they had very little experience making content. Now that they have that experience they want to go back and make Grim Hollow the most realized and polished version they can using that knowledge.

It's an update to the campaign setting and the player's handbook. More lore, more transformations, updated mechanics/content to the 2024 dnd edition

You may notice the original books mixed and match player, DM & campaign content. They are trying to order things better by remaking those books, in addition to adding the spread out content where it needs to be. + the growth of the setting itself and might take into account DnD 2024.

@@ailyn2930 this is mostly a revamp of what is already compatible with the 2014 rule set, so probably not.

As 2024 ruleset is mostly backwards compatible the new and updated will be fairly easy to use in 2014 games. We're also adding in systems that we've used for previous 5e products like the heritage trait system which is compatible with both editions. So no plans to create a separate 2014 version of the Transformed versions, but the content should be quite transferrable regardless of if you plan to make the switch to 5e2024. The original 5e versions will also continue to function for 5e2014 forever :)

@@GhostfireNick Oh I'm mostly just concerned with subclasses being designed/balanced around the features exclusive to the 2024 versions of the classes, but if they're being designed to be compatible with both then that's good! Even if there are a few specific rough patches, all I'll need to work with that is a small errata document for converting details

There's going to be more lore, more transformations, the official timeline, and player content will all be in one place (The new Player's Guide) and DM content will all be condensed to the new DM guide so you don't have to go flipping between multiple books. It's not *just* an update though - Like I said, there's whole new batches of content coming in too!

Yeah, I’m on that fence right now! Sure, it sounds really great, but it’s also disappointing for people like me who spent $200 in a previous Kickstarter to get all the core books. It’s a shame there isn’t some kind of discount for people who helped them get to this point by backing the previous kickstarters and have these books that will become outdated.

I assume it’s a reference to their transformation mechanics. So basically you can become a werewolf, vampire, Lich, devil, etc with actual semi-balanced rules and not just “change your ability scores to this, get this powers and lose control of your character :)” It used to be each one has 4 tiers of transformation, higher you go more drawbacks you get . So a Lich gets crazy powerful nonsense to chose from but needs to feast on souls or get super arthritis for example. I don’t know if they changed anything. This trailer is mostly aimed at people who knew all of these before, but yeah it’s a PR fail for those who don’t lol.

There's another video they have that goes over a general bit of all the changes being made; Timeline, more transformations, a neater packaging of all the lore into the DM's guide, all the DM content in the DM's guide and the player's stuff in the player's guide so you don't have to flip between the two books, a re-working of the traits in existing transformations that felt *bad* to use / play with, etc. etc. There *is* an update to make subclasses functional with the new 5.5 class reworks, but in general it's a re-work of a lot of the existing content.
