Wow, I think the smallest usable knife is the Tops MSK , you can use the esee Candiru, but I attach a lanyard with a couple plating dice drilled through so I have something to hold.. Not sure what I could do with those tiny tools. Good video though, thanks :).

Remember seeing these when they had the kickstarter. The size of the magnesium bar and ferrorod was the most interesting bit I thought. If could get them separate (and it now appears you can buy them as replacement parts, 3 rods for $9.99) and stick them to either a SAK scale, or even a lighter.

@alexandergutfeldt11442 жыл бұрын
These gadget cards are fascinating, but in reality just too small to be reliable! My goto fire kit is based on the polymath products spitfire fire lighting kit. I replace the striker, the pencil sharpener and the wood based tinder with a victorinox walker and wrap the kit in waxed paper. Small, relatively cheap (< 30€ for fire kit and walker) and reliable!

Had a look at these and they aren't really that cheap. Also the aren't a UK legel EDC (if you worry about that kind of stuff) For what some of these cost, you could get a small craft knife, ferro and tinder card that could be slid into a wallet.

I guess it would not be wise to rely on this in a real survival situation. The risk of getting cut from the blade (without making a handle), would be too high. Great review though and the Form Card looks interesting. 👍👍

IMO a knife like the LYNX by JHO is the ideal for this kind of ultra-portable last ditch survival knife. It's the size and shape of a credit card, but it's made of steel and one long side is sharpened, while the opposite side has holes and grooves for grip. This gives you quite a lot of convenient options for holding it securely in a way that that tiny little knife you show here does not (literally just think of how you can manipulate a credit card - it works surprisingly well). There are a bunch of other credit card knives out there, but they all do this crappy foldup thing or they've got 50 tools built in so you can't actually hold it securely as a knife. I've seen the LYNX in use and it works amazingly well for such a simple concept. The big downside to the LYNX is it's hilariously overpriced - $90 for a sharpened rectangle of steel with some holes drilled in it, the thing should be $15 (and I'm betting there will be knockoffs around that price soon enough). Honestly it should be simple enough to make one, I might actually do so.

That looked like fun. The word you used, "gimmicky", sounds about right, Rob. Personally, anyone going out into the woods with a pot/kettle and without a lighter (Bic or otherwise - I seem to remember you don't like Bics 😉) is an idiot! Add to that a cut-down candle (or a DOD survival candle) and you've got the makings of hundreds of fires. I would like to be more conversant with the alternatives for tinder and kindling, and it was that aspect that I first found most fascinating about your videos, and your broad knowledge of the various species and their characteristics. Nice little video.
