I've read the Ring novels and I actually really love them and how strange they are, even if Loop comes out of nowhere...but maybe the weirdest part of this game for me is that Loop, if I remember correctly, establishes that you can't just magically appear in the computer program, the MC is a computer program based on a real person who had to be born as a child in the program and grow to adulthood (the program moves faster than real time) and then to communicate properly I think he had to be reborn to the real world through some convoluted means too? The idea of just...logging into the game to switch worlds really circumvents one of the central problems of the novel. Also, the entire world does have cancer in Loop but that's because everything has the ring virus and it doesn't turn you into a weird demon or whatever. This game took the fun parts of the convoluted science fiction and dumbed them down to being unrecognizable. I'm not sure who this game is intended for, since fans of the books would be confused by retcons and fans of the movies haven't even experienced half the stuff in it...

I thought the first cutscene you shared early in the video felt...off, and I love that you went back into it during the sight/sound section and really broke down just how awful it is. I appreciate the fact that you acknowledged that this game is more related to the books than the film series. A lot of reviews focus on how much it diverges from Ring and use that as a pretext for bashing it when the actual novels the original film was adapted from focus on technology a lot more and do include a lot of elements that were used for this game, though not having read them beyond looking at a synopsis I wouldn't be qualified to speak as regards how authentic an adaptation this game was.

The greatest part of the first book is the fact that Sadako wasn't killed just because of her psychic powers by her abuser, but because her abuser found out during the abuse that she was actually a hermaphrodite and he killed her because he felt nauseated. Honestly, i kind of liked the sort of mystery solving and exploratory gameplay in the loop ver of the CDC. Maybe it's because the combat was such a pain in the real world, that it felt nicer to just run around what looks like a pretty normal office building. Either way, I'm in the same boat as you. This was a pretty shitty game, but for some reason I had a semi ok time with it.

It's actually quite an impressive message that the game manages to convey. Like the characters, you the player would rather live in the virtual recreation of the past rather than the apocalyptic present. It shows you the harshness of the real world, initially presented as a video game, and you're eager to return to what you believe to be the real world. Even once you realize the truth, you long to be back in the loop CDC. Truly a wonderful job of marrying the protagonist's and the player's desires. /talking out my ass

Thank you for explaining the connection to the Ring films and books. I've heard a little about this game and thought it was some kind of last minute branding change to make it vaguely connect with the film series. But with the books having a version of the tape that is a book, it clearly trying to do some kind of meta thing and make the reader paranoid that they themselves might be cursed. And the video game is trying for the same thing. Thus the films, books and video game embrace tropes of their respective medium to this effect. That's actually a really cool concept when I really think about it. And it's a shame the game still isn't very good. But at least it makes sense.
