Well, as long as he can make a living doing what he likes, maybe making millions isn't that important. Looking at the KZbin millionaires....who would want to be like them? Nice to have that much money but, as people? Meh. Fame and meaning are, thankfully, rarely synonymous. He's like the game essayist version of The Velvet Underground; not many people know, but if you DO know, then you KNOW. He's certainly done more to reignite my love of gaming than IGN ever has. "Shiny shiny, shiny discs of plastic. Emulating 90's games in the dark..." Yeah....references. Merry Christmas btw. Or Wass Heill, if you're a traditionalist. Or Happy Chanukah, Kwanza, if you're a traditionalist from a different part of the world. Either way, I wish you good fortune through a synthetic approximation of conversation at this time of year.

100% with you on this! I just now discovered him and immediately feel a click, like I've found something that I should have already a long time ago. Love the well-thought-out and informed narration and views, but also the little goofy bits sprinkled at seemingly perfect intervals. I'm Finnish and people here tend to speak with a very monotone and matter-of-fact style, so I can really vibe with his tone, not too energetic nor too excited. Also because of that, the abrupt bursts of emotion really catch me of guard and make me smile. I'm not in the mood to play games or watch movies/shows myself all that much these days, but somehow his videos captivate all my attention just like that, for the whole duration of the video too! That is no mean feat, and just like you said it feels really comfy and relaxing to hear someone think out loud and explain their thoughts like this.

This game reminded me of it, as they're from relatively the same era of Square late on the PS1... I would love to someday see you do a video on Vagrant Story, one of my favorite games ever, and played by far too few people. Beyond that I think you would genuinely enjoy and appreciate it if you've never played it. It's an utterly unique game, and to me the best looking game on the system. And it's a rare game from that era where the maturity of the writing still absolutely holds up to this day. edit: The reason this reminds me of Vagrant Story is more than them both being late PS1 Square games; the sphere-grid-based-range combat system for a single player character in a more action oriented jrpg used in Parasite Eve was also used in Vagrant Story, albeit in a more refined state. VS also uses full 3D environments at all times, with free camera movement, so the technique naturally works way better and feels more natural there than in Parasite Eve. Also... 35:42 hahaha, bravo edit2: Well now I feel silly for commenting before watching the end : )

Your embarrassing high-school story reminded me of a similar situation I had. I was working at a grocery store and saw a tall redheaded man from behind that I assumed was my good friend. I stepped up behind him and said jokingly, "we don't serve your kind here." He turned around and responded in understandable horror, "what!?" The blood drained from my face and my hands started to shake. I said, " i thought you were someone else." I turned and speedwalked to the nearest pair of doors leading to the back of the store where I hid for a good half hour.

Today I have found your Vagrant Story video... and I plan to watch many more ;) You sir are a new fresh voice in the gaming reviews space. You have restored my faith in an idea that good writing and postmodernity can coexist and produce something both enjoyable and profound. Keep the good work. Recently I have come back to the essays of David Foster Wallace and I like how your videos resonate on the same witty-ness ;) I quietly wish that there were some DFW in the space of essays but for games, from PSX milieu. I would like to read something profound as the DFW's Federer piece but for Vagrant Story. Resonant Arc guys are doing a fantastic job close to that field. I think to write something concerning PSX era and beeing simultaneously profound requires a scribe job of Alazlam Durai level. To gather various podcast, comments, describe that era as an experience like let's say Proust, it would be a thing to cherish.

27:57 This gag made me jump out of my skin because it was so sudden! Nonetheless, this was a delightfully thorough review of the original Parasite Eve game, its history and its ties to the pre-existing media in the franchise. Great job!

Oh man. Been loving your content and the original music you bring to it., but Ted and Dougal warning folks off from The Passion of St Tibulus being spliced in was just the cherry on top here.

PE1 is such a gem. A relic of a time when weird games actually had a pretty good budget and were made by big companies. I miss the 95-2005 period so much, before the dlc, the microtransactions, nft, cookie cutter games that are all the same and uninspired… every year a bunch of super original stuff came out, we really didn’t know how good we had it game wise back then

I saw ur vid randomly. I like ur commentary. This is my fav PS1 game. My fav movie is The Thing and I sing opera. So when I played this the 1st my mind was completely blown. I even got a grade bump on a biology presentation on mitochondria for being the 1st person to use a video game as part of the presentation.

Nice to see someone else talk about this game. This was one of my favorites since I bought it for myself with the money my parents got me for my birthday the year it was released. I remember getting stuck on Day 2 in the zoo and then having to go back and buy the strategy guide. Memories.

As a molecular biologist; I can say that that was by far not the worst way I heard someone explain the endosymbiont-hypothesis. The worst way for the record, was George Lucas in the first Prequel-Movie. Keep it up Also, fuck Dawkins! There is usually a reason someone becomes a "popular" scientist. Writing pop-science books is basically a Plan B type deal.

In 2015, Dawkins wrote: “Is trans woman a woman? Purely semantic. If you define by chromosomes, no. If by self-identification, yes. I call her “she” out of courtesy.” How is this "transphobic?"
