Correction: Fallout 1 dev team originally partnered with Steven Jackson to use GURPS, not the D&D ruleset. I got it right two years ago, but not this time. I play D&D and somehow goofed this.

I got introduced to the Fallout franchise by random chance. Way back when I was a snot-nosed kid, when the internet was still on its early wild west stages that I dared not dread, my sister got married to some fellow who turned out to be an awesome brother-in-law within weeks. Didn't take long for me to find out that the guy was really into games and gave me free crack in the form of games burned on CDs. Got all kinds of great gems from that massive box, one of them being Fallout 2. I played the game without any patched back then, but got really invested in its setting and mood. After three or four replays, I got to visit the first game and while initally weirded out by the time limit, again enjoyed the hell out of it. Spent a few years going over the seven stages of grief when Fallout 3 was released and accepted that it was a flawed release that felt both unoriginal and lacking the spirit of the first two games. I respect the hell out of Fallout 1, but even when Fallout 2 is a more exaggerated, goofier version of its predecesor, I love it to bits. Also, I think Fallout Tactics:Brotherhood Of Steel was a solid 7.5 and stood relatively well on its own, albeit not holding up the originals either.

Words of wisdom to all the arrogant naysayers out there; if the game runs like crap and is infested with game breaking bugs, download the Fallout 2 restoration mod. Today I've just finished it for the first time in my life so I can confirm that it's not only nostalgia that makes people like it. I don't mind even the most dated references overall it's just more content for a great game. First one was a game I loved while I played it but after finishing it, I will never come back to it again, meanwhile Fallout 2 I can already feel urge replay it. As well at the beginning, it gives me this sense of adventure. Though the final boss fight should just be Sergeant Dornan angry at you because you left your never ending guard at hangar instead of that dummy Horrigan.
@leadbones Жыл бұрын
Plenty of games I admit I think extra highly of due to nostalgia. But Fallout 2 is a legend and a game I've played many times since it was released. If you haven't played Planescape, you want to give that one a try also. Not the same as Fallout, but certainly has that classic Black Isle feel and the best story ever told in a video game.
@carlpotter1926 Жыл бұрын
There's nothing wrong with excessively valuing something because of nostalgia. Nostalgia is personal, a memory of something in your life that was positive and went some way into making you who you are. Any good memory from your life is nostalgic, and your life will eventually be 99% memory. Who cares if nostalgia means your memories are not 100% objectively true? You're a person, not a fucking hard-drive. With this in mind...Carmaggeddon was the greatest game ever and Sarah Marks had the greatest boobs of any girl who ever had boobs. Believing a lie someone else tells you is usually harmful. Believing one you tell yourself is usually what makes life worth living.

FO2 was infamous on release for its bugginess. I don't understand the "time limit" complaint about FO1. It's not like it's not enough time or you have a laundry list of objectives. You literally just have to go to 1 location, grab the chip and make it back and it's DONE. And 90 days is enough to walk over the entire map 3 times. So I feel like this pressure you feel is imaginary or psychological.
@ArturCzajkaАй бұрын
I’ll tell you how I got traumatized by the time limit: at the beginning you’re given the location of the of the other vault, but half-way there you discover a settlement. So you go visit Arroyo, get sidetracked, and only at the other side of the state you realize, that you’ve got 7 days left (after the extension), and still didn’t bring the chip, which is already in your pocket at this point, because there are just a few more side quests to tick off 😂

Nice, pretty fun, pretty solid review. 1 thing aside: Frank Horrigan is pretty interesting main antagonist. While whether he or Master is better one is debatable and depends on stark different archetype they use and introduction. Personally I even prefer Frank as he is technically more anticipation driven. Both however are pretty much best bosses franchise had (+ Legate Lanius in solid 3rd). It's said that neither Fallout 3 nor 4 gave us anyone nearly as memorable or interesting. No. 3 gave us prick that's not any more relevant than Enclave Mr President and in Fallout 4 we were more than likely to treat 'Father' as some Master-like antagonist that down the development route became nothing similar... and nothing as fun, which is a shame as Synths were rather interesting addition (and daring one on many levels, considering all their generations and what those meant for story). But yeah, Frank is cool, and 'can' be a challenge. Heck, I still hope someone alike will appear in A.T.O.M. Trudograd~ but that's just a wish

It reminded me of crusader no remorse, and all the swears. We loved that stuff, we loved all of it. We wanted to see all the various death sprites and animations, just like more renowned games like prince of persia, odd world Abe’s odyssey, heart of darkness. Remember a game called kingpin, it was a first person almost open world shooter, Cyprus hill made an appearance. It had like the most swears of any game of all time. My point is during this time, every game had to top the last.

Something that a native English speakers don't realize is that for every other language the game's pop culture references are barely able to be picked out (even more in the pre widespread internet times) As a French kid I got some of few references, but since I could count them on my hands that makes F2 just depict a world that is just weird with crazy people that just might not make sense. And that in itself absolutely fits the post apocalyptic narrative. That is also what I expect the young native English speaker of today and tomorrow to feel as they wouldn't get many of the now very dated references.
@michamarkowski22042 жыл бұрын
I think it depends what your cultural background is. The first time I played Fallout 2 (2000), I had no Internet connection and my English was poor (had to use a dictionary to understand, what I had to do in some quests). I understood some pop culture references. But it was because of the movies and tv series I've watched before Fallout 2. E.g. I didn't get Pulp Fiction references, because I didn't see Pulp Fiction. I didn't get Monty Python references, because that wasn't my kind of humor and I didn't watch it on TV. But I got Star Trek references, because I've seen Star Trek before (fun fact: "I'm not a XYZ, I'm a doctor" - I found that reference only after 30+ playthroughs).

The dev team was constantly on the Fallout message boards and while Fallout 2 was being developed I think it was Feargus that went in there and corrected a user on how successful Fallout 1. Apparently.. Fallout 1 sold no better than a generic no name FPS at the time. It BARELY got a sequel even though it had a small but feverish fan base. Fallout 1 was a cult hit for sure, but not a financial powerhouse we might think it was.

I wish more games had a similar feel to early Fallout and Jagged Alliance 2. I miss the days where a squadmate i leveled up for hours could get their head blown off and die because I made the mistake of taking cover by a window. Permadeath for the win.

Glad I stumbled on your channel, man! Great stuff. Say what you want about this damn virus, but I am dead certain it has helped some smaller channels to get some much needed attention. For sure.
