you missed a big point a huge one and i cant recall if its anime only or in the manga but you missed the fact unlike noitora he doesnt treat his fraction and allies like shit hes above them but he gets pissed when they get taken out and flashbacks when he was a panther hollow showed how them letting him eat parts of them their masks since they respected him letting him do that to try and help him evolve and try to help him become a vasto lorde and a king if hollows and he keeps those guys around protects them and they come with him to the espada so hes really not just a savage i wanna be top asshole like noitora he actually is just an alpha hes a brash wild guy but he is a leader he is a pack creature at heart but he is the pack alpha he is no ones second or pawn and it makes him more an anti hero then a villain like you realize it w those flashbacks w how he starts acting in the arc you realize he isnt evil or dark pike noitra or ulquiorra hes just the fight crazy antihero

Oh yes he has and for the better. The TYBW sure had an effect on many but it sure caused Grimmjow to reflect and moderate. More so since Hueco Mundo is more peaceful with Harribel, Nel and their Fracciones now.

Yea Ichigo and Orihime seem to have affected Grimmjow and Ulquiorra with their actions. I think Grimmjow changed the lesser of the two but he’s mellowed out compared to when he busted in with his boys the first time.

What I like about Grimmjow is, despite his boasts about becoming a king, he doesn't seem to have any interest in actually ruling over anyone. It seems more like he only wants to be king so that he himself can't be subjugated

the thing about Ulquiorra is that he is the embodiment of what a "perfect" hollow is, he is scary, intelligent, doesnt show emotions, doesnt have a clear goal, he is just Ulquiorra. Grimmjow on the other hand is much more human , he has emotions, goals, pride, thats why he was always more relatable, he is a true rival to Ichigo because he has goals to grow to

I always saw Grimmjow as a reflection of Ichigo’s inner hollow. Grimmjow always proclaims that he is a king. Who else talks about kings? Zangetsu. Zangetsu asks Ichigo what the difference is between a king and his horse. It’s a conversation about power and instinct. White Ichigo and Grimmjow both have big sinister grins, and relish fighting. Ichigo grew after each battle with Grimmjow, and mastered his hollow powers more and more after each one. Even learning to admit that a part of himself loves to fight.

*Opinion:* Grimmjow is the only Espada that actually knows how to fight, not relying on his special Constitution, like the rest of the Espada, be it Hierro, or boons from their Resurreccion Form. He was able to fight against Bankai Ichigo and Vizards early on in his base form, even with one arm. He also demonstrates the most unconventional fighting style and uses cero in very creative ways. For example: Grimmjow pinned Ichigos arms with his sword and proceeded to use a Cero at point blank range. He also temporarily restrained Ulquiorra by a method never seen again.

Given the fact that Grimmjow's life as a hollow was a fight dedicated to fighting his way to the top, always defeating and eating everything, small or big, that appeared in his path, naturally he was the hollow of the espada that had the most experience in fighting and that was his speciality and his true niche.

Unlike aizen, he can go toe and toe with various enemies using his brute strength alone but is also ignorant this is also his downfall. Even aizen no matter how upper hand he got in battle, he always has way to ensure his enemy is defeat with one blow before he can get back up

I like grimmjow because every time he was in the story you could bet on someone getting hurt... be it his enemies, his allies or himself. In that sense it was never boring with him. I also like his honor code which he clearly has and his independence. His design was also great, together with his fighting style, he is a brawler and doesn't rely on special moves And abilities.

He sure did change in the aftermath, even the king has to be humbled at some point. It would seem his drive to survive and fight against the Quincy invasion and extermination attempt in Hueco Mundo provided that dark humbling experience that made him the more reflective fellow that he is.

Grimmjow became almost a comedic character in the last arc, always angry and getting pushed off-screen. Back in the day, that kind of treatment meant the person in question would get a boot in the face ( or worse), so I think it shows how much he's chilled out over the years. Since he's completely one-shotting top level Quincies, It's fair to say he's quite a bit stronger since we last saw him, and maybe that strength finally made him get over his need to prove himself to everyone. Nowadays he's basically Hueco Mundo's resident Kenpachi. Loves a fight, will kill anything that moves if there's fun to be had in it, and overall isn't really a malicous type of person. Definitely one of my favorite characters.

Yes! This is totally how I saw it. He's just a guy who really hates feeling subjugated. I mean, if I had Aizen and Ulquiorra on my nape 24/7 just watching over me like I'm a mad dog I would be kind of an asshole too. After he's doing as he pleases for some years in Hueco Mundo he seems a lot more liberated. He protects his home, cooperates with teamwork and even prioritizes his fights. His former self would have just go and try to have a fight with Ichigo the moment he saw him, but he had more important things at that moment and let Ichigo go without much problem.

Grimmjow was different from Kenpachi in that he seemed to be afraid of what would happen if he stopped fighting rather than loving to fight for its own sake, but he mirrors Zaraki in as soon as chaos breaks out he uses it as cover to do whatever he wants. Much like Kenpachi with Tosen and Komamura, Grimmjow does his own thing as soon as the fighting starts. Neither of them actually loyal to their organizations, just using them for their own ends and will go rogue without second thought. Grimmjow had a big inferiority complex that drove his character, huge chip on his shoulder. Fighting was about not backing down or being weak to him whereas it was just fun for Zaraki. I’m with you on Ulquiorra but I love Grimmjow too. Totally opposite enemies for Ichigo is always a good time and he changes both of them just like Renji and Byakuya. Love how excited Grimmjow was, never a dull moment with that guy.

I think Grimmjow has changed. But I think your opinion would depend on how closely you watched the character. He has definitely matured. The moments I liked the most were actually when his pondering face was shown (in manga, quite a few panels were changed or omitted in the anime to make him look too villain-y. He seems to actually still carry the feeling of gratitude towards Orihime for healing his arm even if the guy is too tsundere to admit it. He also actually enjoys being part of the company - with his fraccion and fighting alongside Neliel and Halibel in the novel. He also listens to Neliel and even that Skull in Hueco Mundo said that although Grimmjow loves fighting, he’s a reasonable person (which definitely cannot be said about Grimmjow in the past). He also didn’t try to kill Urahara right away when he saved him and they even had an agreement (the details of which are the biggest mystery that hasn’t been revealed, yet anyway 😭). I also find it fascinating that he didn’t get into the fight between Ichigo and Nnoitra and focused on escaping to survive back then. The old Grimmjow would’ve ptobdbmy fought to death. There are so many tiny moments that I don’t even remember all of them.

Having the potential to be more iconic than vegetable... The lost agent's arc could be about Ichigo listening to White's story (don't read the manga ending... But instead of ichigo being multiracial... For me ichigo is the reincarnation of white. So he has three dads(isshin, aizen, juha) and is an older being but also a new persona. But in his core is Hollow. The idea of fullbringers dont being babies touch by hollow energy inbthe womb but but more the uub of db gt the reincarnation of majin buu) Then using a glasses to see spirits (like maki de jujutsu) and learn some tricks of quincy of ryuken. I feel like he fights for himself mostly while Ichigo fights for his friends. I wish he had more screentime like Vegeta though, and I hope he get's more in the anime adapatation of TYBW arc. Also I like how the final fight with Grimmjow was in a sunny more colorful area, and Ulquiorra was a dark/black and white area.

Grimmjow reminds me of some of the bullies I had to fight in the Mexican middle school I went to. Ichigo's first encounter with Grimmjow almost made me cry as a 13 year old kid 'cause I was having flashbacks of a fight I had with a guy much older than me (I was 12 and he 15). I got my ass handed pretty gruesomely. HA, ha. I had to fight to be respected, just like Ichigo. We both drew a lot of a attention due to our flamboyant hair colors... So they thought I was an easy target. I did lose many fights, but nobody dared touch me during the last year. Why? Because I fought hard even as a little shit in a room filled with rejects who should have graduated three years prior. Probably some of you are going through the same situation, and my advice is to fight back with all you've got. Bite their ears, pinch their eyes, and most importantly.. Go for the joints. I almost forgot the mandible. Stay strong KIDS!

I think grimmjow's slight change during the series shows how you can change certain aspects of a character without moving its core, what made it what it is in the first place, and kubo did a great job with that. also, the flashback episodes which featured grimmjow's evolution from a gillian to an espada are some of my favorites in the entire series, and I adore the concept of the hollow evolution proccess as a whole

I feel back in the day Grimmjow was insanely popular. Ever since his introduction in the manga he felt like a huge presence and he was easily recognized, and then after his anime debut the fanbase exploded on love for him. And then after Ichigo defeated him it was as if he slowly fell into obscurity, even when he returned near the end of the 1000 year blood war arc (and his appereance was pretty brief back then on top of that, so it didn't help). I wonder if with the anime returning if they could extend his role on the final arc and make his popularity surge again. He was so far the top of popularity back in the day it was really bizarre seeing how much he fell from favor (then again, Kubo didn't do much for him after his fight with Ichigo)

Hey all! I've browsed through the various replies so far (103), so before I reply Mr Tommo question for today I wanted to say that what I do like the most with Bleach and one of the reasons I do not tire of it despite watching/reading it multiple times is that the range of characters is vast enough for anyone to find a favorite one, regardless of why. Even can have a favorite per faction! Today's question: Some mentionned Grimmjow being like Hollow Ichigo in a way. I quite agree, but I would go further. I think Grimmjow is Ichigo's counterpart more thoroughly than any of his "bros" in the shinigami section. Grimmjow is tagged "villain" because he is from Hueco Mundo, but the whole arc establishes that it is more than just a black and white world through characters like Ulquiorra, Stark or Nelliel. I think you find traits of Ichigo in both Nelliel (sense of duty and respect) and Grimmjow (free spirit defending his values and always trying to push his boundaries further). Ichigo is set as the hero, but he puts Soul Society upside down and this society which is so codified and with strict rigid rules does change because of him. The same goes with Hueco Mondo. So yeah, Grimmjow does change because of meeting Ichigo. All the ones he fights more than once against do. At the beginning of Hueco Mundo, Grimmjow is beast-like, so his resurrection Panthera is no real surprise because of his beastly instincts and behaviour. But as he pushes back his bondaries in his desire to fight Ichigo (he is like Zaraki for this, never backing down on the idea of fighting against him), he develops more aptitudes regarding strategies. I think he has a potential for growth, just like Ichigo. Concerning him wanting to be king ,I think for him it means to be the strongest, not a ruler. Hueco Mundo is the survival of the fittest world after all, so the king is the strongest, but he does not seem to mind much being tempered down by Nelliel in CFYOW or to be under the rule of Hallibel. I also think Ichigo and Grimmjow tend to show something similar in their respective growth: a resistance to fit into a predefined mold. Both will not do what is expected of them but what feels right in their own views, not out of need to rebel no matter what but to be true to their own self when the situation arises.It implies a form of introspection that is far from being obvious in Grimmjow due to his extrovert and exhuberant temper. Would love to see the light novels on screen, maybe as movies or specials? I did not see anyone mentionning "We do knot always love you" which has no fight (from what I remember) but mentions characters like Komamura after the TYBW. It was kind of a back to normal after this war. I'm not too sure when it takes place regarding CFYOW which was written after, but there's no rule saying you must follow a time-line strictly when you write. If someone knows how both novels work out regarding the time-line please let me know :). (I know I'm long... sorry guys but it's not often I can discuss this kind of stuff!)

I feel that more of the hot headed rival character in the soul society arc was probably Kenpachi. He kind of matches Grimmjow's maniacal blood thirst, and much like the Espada, he was a major obstacle in Ichigo's path

The Renji to Grimmjow to Bazz B pipeline. Great quick breakdown of his arc, I personally loved this character From his personality to his design and his ridiculously long name. Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez! He felt like a mix of Renji and Zaraki when first introduced. My favorite moment with him is his clash with Aizen where he uses spirit pressure to humble him with the tea. His backstory is probably my favorite in the series, and was such great exposition and world building as to how hollows worked and evolved I think the problem is because they mirrored Byakuya/Renji dynamic. Ichigo had 2 rivals but it didn't flow as well as in Soul Society I personally felt should've killed him off,to punctuate the tragic nature of the Hollows

After Aizen, Grimmy is my favorite baddie from Bleach. Before I even finish the video, it needs to be clear that my first cross-platform username (GRIMMCHRIST) was spawned from the CAPSLOCK_BLEACH fandom on LiveJournal and that the only piece of Bleach merch (that wasn't paper) ended up being a Grimmjow plush. The OBVIOUS nod to color theory with the blue v orange color comparison, the inclusion of the dual Jugulators chapter arts, the real "I AM A NEMESIS" vibe he gave off - it felt right to me. I never started liking Ichigo as a protagonist until about 3 years ago. Having a foil for him pleased me a lot, I LOVED Grimmjow's character design, and the idea that Destruction was his aspect of death was pretty got-dang solid. Aside: Starrk is my favorite Espada. I just wanna say that. I'll be honest, Ulqiuorra has the **best** overall design, and Grimmbo cannot keep up, but shit -- the big grin, the greaser-meets-yakuza hair, the outfit, the backstory, GOTDAYUM! He's a likable character either way, and I loved him so much during high school that I even had "Sexta Espada" engraved onto my graduation ring. So, uh, imma finish the video now. Just had to gush a bit. Ta-ta!

I love Grimmjow because he reminds me a lot of Vegeta, who is my favorite character in Dragonball. Grimmjow is absolutely SAVAGE, but you can tell that it was because of what he had to do to survive in Hueco Mundo. However, he does have a strong sense of honor because regardless of the situation, even under the foot of Aizen's establishment, he can't help but stay true to himself and doesn't care what he has to do to be himself. I would love to see Grimmjow in a situation where he wasn't under an establishment and maybe slowly falls in love with a shinigami to see how he would react to the complications that brings. I think that would be really interesting.

He is certainly a lot like Kenpachi for slightly different reasons and has a lot of character development. By being beaten multiple times and having to rely on others. Starting Grimjow would have never teamed up in such a way with Urahara. He shows that road form Hollow to full Arrancar very well. Starting of as a Beast and becoming more human with time, developing a character and controlling his instincts.

Axel Jules Etienne You have to remember what Grimmjow is though. He's a hollow at the end of the day. While some hollows can fight their instincts like Nel, some just can't and some just embrace it. Also Vegeta has very good health care in his universe. As in he had the ability to learn from his mistakes, evil decisions, and harm he inflicted by having it inflicted unto himself. This is up to and including death.

@@corruptangel6793 Completely forget about that, though with Aizen gone do they still technically keep those traits? Also do those who replace them also keep the same traits or do they enter with a different aspect? Either way it seems once an Espada former or no completely changes who they are (example Ulquiorra learning what a "heart" is thus overcoming nihilism or Starrk overcoming loneliness which explains why he is content and rather not fight) they seem to just fade away. Granted they've taken heavy combat damage but we've seen similar or worse wounds but the character survives regardless.

I agree how he changed for sure... I haven't read the manga (so thankful to learn what I learned from this video btw) but from what you said and what I saw in the anime... I think his evolution is all about learning what it means to be a King. He says he wants to be the King right? But did he really know what that meant before? In the anime you're seeing the beginning of that change. You see in the flashback with his future fracciones what started this whole King thing, but I don't think he had much of an idea of what it meant to be King besides just being the strongest. Then Aizen and Ichigo come into his life. Aizen proclaims himself the king of Hueco Mundo basically and then there is Ichigo, this enemy protector. He sees Ichigo and his friends and of course Grimmjow sees how Aizen is with those is Hueco Mundo. The dichotomy there makes Grimmjow think about what King means. The humbling you mentioned, the games Aizen plays, the conversations with Ichigo, the connections and bonds he sees between Ichigo and his friends versus how Grimmjow and everyone in Hueco Mundo is with each other... the anime only covers a short period of time with Grimmjow, yeah like you said that honor system, how Grimmjow steps away from everything to only focus on his fight with Ichigo, Grimmjow becoming a bit more reserved... those are all the signs I think of this inner change where he needs to question himself and re-think things. It's just in it's inception in the anime though. What you said about the manga though and CFYOW says to me that he's figuring a lot of it out, especially what you said about CFYOW and that's awesome. So awesome. I think he's finding out what kind of King he wants to be and doing it. I want to read the manga and CFYOW so much now.

With Hollows like Nel and her Fracciones, Harribel, and her group, and even Grimmjow, I thought there was eventually going to be an arc in Bleach revolving around Arrancars regaining their humanity despite not technically being human anymore. The exploration of how whether or not they can rise above their instincts and truly live rather than just fight for survival, if they remember their past lives as humans, the ethics of shinigami slaying Hollows to purify their souls when those souls have already taken on a new life, and if coexistence between shinigami and peaceful Arrancars can ever truly be possible. Aw, who am I kidding. It's Bleach, that was never gonna happen.

My only issue with grimmjow is the fact how his fraccion were killed off in their first fights. I love Grimmjow, I enjoy his backstory and personality. To me, he never seemed to be unfeeling or completely maniacal. He seems to open up more throughout the story, in one panel he talks about him hurting ichigos friends and ichigo seemingly to not care- I always saw that as him trying to avenge his fraccion since he did seem to somewhat care. Maybe not in a human sense, since hollows are very animalistic, but in a pack sense.
