Hello .. my name is Stephanie and I live in Houston Texas. Susannah Martin is my fifth great grandmother. I was blown away when you showed her gravesite and I teared up as well. Thank you for being there and sharing ❤️ I was born July 1962 and she was hanged July 1692 🥲

I'm related to her through a brother her maiden family, the North side. Sadly thats not a grave site but a memorial, they dont know where theyre buried or if they were even given a grave. I hope the family snuck her away and buried her secretly. Where her house once stood has a marker nearby.

Are you sure? 1692 was 330 years ago.. Even by today's standards where an average generation is about 25 years years, that would mean she'd have to be more like your 12th great-grandmother, not 5th...

If you ever get a chance to come to the uk, Scotland and England’s witch trials were beyond nuts, 19 were executed in Salem, over 1500 in the Scotland trials. Crazy.
@stevenwebster3286
@stevenwebster3286 2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if those executions coincide with a poor harvest. My theory about Salem is that the witchcraft was a pretense to seize the property of the accused. It's like how the drug war is used to seize property, and gain access to the resources of 3rd countries, such as South America by the CIA, for American corporations.
@845SiM
@845SiM 2 жыл бұрын
@@stevenwebster3286 I wouldn’t discount that. There probably was a time when people saw an advantage to turn in there competition or rival and to use witch craft as a easy method. People can be arseholes regardless of the time period.

If I’m not mistaken I think that’s what started the witch trials in the new world (usa)…they feared that witches escaped over there to the new world in order to practice witchcraft safely and freely.

@@845SiM One thing people need to remember is that women were not allowed to own property when they lost a spouse or and had no male relative and if they were the only survivor left, it was quite common to turn them in for witchcraft to get their land. Some of the magistrates actually got the land after the deaths of the victims. When really digging into it, it’s easy to see why a lot of people view this as one of the most devious land grabs in colonial history after the girls made those claims. Those people got played. When England had enough on both continents they ended the practice.

I have studied the witch trails for years. As a historian, it's important to teach my girls about this time and place. I learned a lot myself because, of course, even as a historian, there's always something new to learn. Thank you for pointing out that there's no memorial for Mr. Giles Cory, who was pressed. It's important for all of these innocent victims to the hysteria be acknowledged. God rest their souls. 😢

I live 20 minutes from salem and my grandmother is friends with Lori Cabot and a psychic that works in salem. I also got the privilege to meet Lori Cabot when I was pregnant with my first daughter and she came up to me and she put her hand my belly and blessed my daughter and said "she will be a amazing child." Watching this it makes me realise just how young a country America is. One of our local pubs opened 1622 and is still running. Kings head in Chester. We just walk past it without a thought and buildings that are hundreds of years old. I really must record some of these places more in depth rather than quickly in passing. Even the roman amphitheatre and gardens we walk by without a thought although they are 1000 years old. Great video as always guys, nice to see you reporting on this and great to see the US preserving history rather than bulldozing it like we do too much.

I've watched many documentaries about the witch trials in both Salem and in the UK. It was clearly one of the most heartbreaking and shameful acts in our human history. So many people died because of believing in irrational superstition and prejudice. The Witch trials are more than just a real life horror story, but also an example of what people can be like when they are at their worst. I visited Salem two times and it truly is a beautiful place. Love your video by the way!

Back then people were jealous , selfish and envious of others whom had land and wealth ! When these witch laws came out , neighbours were pointing fingers at one another ! The same happened in Britain ! A historian once said “ These acquisitioners that made these laws , accused and condemned were nothing more than psychotic serial killers who revelled in torturing and killing ! They would go from place to place , using these laws for their own blood lust ! Beautiful place for such a horrid historical background but as they say you never judge a book by it’s cover ! The community as others have said have learnt by their mistakes and have tried to clean and make this area more forgiving for what had happened in the past and preserved the good parts and comemerated the innocent lives that were taken by these vile serial killers ! I’m enjoying your KZbin and learning a lot !

I am a witch and I made the trip to Salem several years ago. I always wanted to go there to pay homage to the people who were killed (targeted) for being different or for merely being easy targets. I got so much just by standing at the foot of Gallows Hill and going to the witches jail than anything else in Salem. If you go there to tour the area, avoid the big Witch Museum. It's a rip off. Also, I stayed at Best Western Plus - North Shore Hotel in Danvers and saved a lot of money by doing so. The tradeoff is the traffic you have to deal with between the hotel and Salem. Also try to find the time for a ghost tour; pretty cool.

I visited salem for the same purposes the hotel salem makes things easier and one of the cheaper too. If you go again the witch walk is lead by one of the high priests or priestess of salem they practice the Cornish (english) witchcraft. It gives you a different way of calling the corners to different practices and a witches perspective as well as the history of salem. One of the better tours.

Great video. Huge nostalgia for me since I lived in Salem for nearly 10 years. I can't believe that jail is now a residence. It was abandoned when I lived in Salem and it was a creepy creepy place. I can't fathom living in that place now. One weird story: one Halloween I had taken a picture of a guy dressed as Michael Myers standing in front of the house that is next to Charter Street cemetery. It was in the 90's so I developed the film and had it printed. For years there was only one person in the photo. Then one day I looked closer at the photo and there was a second person next to Michael Myers in camouflage hiding in the bushes! This guy never said anything, he didn't move, and for years I didn't even know he was in the photo. It creeps me out thinking about it to this day.

This is such a sad historical event.We had things like this too in the U.K. as well ,but witches were burnt or drowned .Very disgusting treatment.Most were innocent people and they lost their lives because someone had a grudge,disliked them,jealousy etc.So many lives lost and sometimes whole families.The worse part the wise women who knew about herbs and acted as midwives were amongst these.So villages and towns lost all that help .These women were so skilled and had been taught from Mother to Daughter for generations.This is when doctors only cure was bloodletting and leeches..So because of loosing women like this others suffered for it too.So sad.I am glad they remember all those who died because they were normal people.It’s sad how witches get labelled with a bad name.Mose are just in tune with the earth and Spirit and are loving caring people .You may even have one living next door.You would never know.The Bad ones(Black witches) ..Mess with things they should not and will live to regret it.These paint a bad picture for all witches .Brilliant video once again and very informative.I did not know that one had been crushed.That must have been awful for him and no doubt drawn out too..Glad I found your Chanel..Love n Light 🥰

Me and a friend did a trip to Salem in 2019. Funny thing is we were unaware of the shrine they built at Proctor's Ledge. We came up the hill from behind the Walgreens and actually explored the hanging spot. When you get away from the kitsch of Salem and actually stand on the spot where those poor innocent people were hanged for no good reason it's sobering. So glad you guys tapped into that feeling at the end. Amazing place. We also hit the Rebecca Nurse farm where there's another shrine in the graveyard. One of the victims has a grave there as well. Legend states that the bodies were cut down and tossed in a niche on Proctor's Ledge but that the families of some snuck in and recovered them and buried them privately. Witches were not allowed propper graves.

Something I wanted to share with the two of you and the audience was in regard to hanging back in the day. These poor souls because of the property they owned were strangled to death, except for poor Giles the beyond brave who was pressed to death. Those that were hung had the rope put around their necks and at the appointed time they were pushed forward, strangling until they were dead with no drop to snap the neck. Disgusting and most vile deeds took place there in 1692.

I’ve taught The Crucible and historical background info on Salem to my high school students for years. Interestingly, the reason you see the victims hung approx a month apart is bc judges made the rounds back then only 1x per month. As you pointed out, Judge Hathorne is buried in Salem. His ancestor, writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, was so ashamed of his past that he changed the spelling of his name. Thanks, Guys. Great job as always. ❤️👏🏻

It is horrible to think that this woman would have been tortured & put to death for being evil because she was “Different” she wouldn’t hurt anyone… sadly we haven’t “evolved” much since then either. You are both lovely and genuine folks whose videos I found almost by accident, and I have spent many hours since then (I have a lot of time now I am housebound with chronic illness) 'catching up'. I loved your area 51 video, and the vid you guys did on the Conjuring house kept me thinking until the wee hours of the night (I spend my nights up most of the night due to my illness). Have a fantastic new year Michael and Jessica - please keep doing what you do - I for one now have something to keep my interest up when I can. All the best, Dennis Stratford New Zealand.

Fun fact: the green associated with witch actually came from Wizard of Oz because they thought green looks good onscreen. Before that, red or orange were the common colors for witches.

I live in Rhode Island and have been to Salem a few times. Halloween is the busiest time of year but people recommend you don’t go because people can get really crazy in Salem on Halloween. It’s for safety reasons they recommend people not going. The last time I went to Salem was with my friend and her friend who found out through Ancestry that she’s related to Bridget Bishop. It was funny because when you’re in Salem you see lots of people on the streets doing role playing and people being taken away to court and you can watch mock trials. But a woman role playing as Bridget Bishop came up to us and my friend’s friend wanted to tell her she was her ancestor. I think she said Bridget was a cousin but I could be wrong, it was a while ago.

When I went to Salem for vacation I stopped at The Witch's Dungeon. They play a small bit of the trial of either Rebecca Nurse or Sarah Proctor. After they condemn her your guide took you to the basement where the dungeon is set up and you got to see what the conditions where like in the dungeon at the time of the trials. Whole families where even kept there even pets. They also have a wooden beam that was actually part of the dungeon.

I love the totally awesome clothes n hats you wear, Jessica, your style is exactly like mine was in the 1970's, when we're were a blend of hippie, goth, n Glam n high fashion, but you are lucky today, cuz no one even bats an eye at that sort of dress, unlike when I was coming up n running the streets n parks n cemeteries n bars n clubs as a teenager. We got great alienation by great scores of the unhip population back then, but we purveyed. I haven't changed my style in all this time n I am 66 yrs old, but I still miss the days when all of us who were innovative dressers were like a great club n always we were accepted by each other no matter where we came from or how old we were!!! It was an awesome time!!! Thanks for continuing on with the most fabulous styles ever !!!

The hysteria emanating from witch trials turns people from human to beast. Group hysteria nearly always leads to irrational conclusions. I visited Salem when I was 13, so that was 25 years ago. I remember going to the museum and the two cemeteries. I remember standing in the museum and just sobbing. The guide had told us that something as simple as a woman voicing an opinion that differed from her husband would earn her an accusation. Now, I'm a mother, a divorcee, and a massage therapist. How quickly would I be accused?
