Cap: Nicely presented and much appreciated by many, I am sure. As I mentioned before (and you touched on here), there are also TONS of useful features within this software that have nothing to do with voice commands. Here are just a few: 1) Program a macro to effectively un-toggle a single-key binding into two separate commands. Example: In IL-2 BoX, the landing gear up/down key-bind is only one key (a toggle), so if you don't check the indicators you can easily forget what position the gear is. Air/dive brake too. I prefer having separate (DCS-style, i.e. realistic) gear up and gear down buttons on my HOTAS, but that is not natively possible in IL-2. You can set a variable in VA to keep track of the gear position, and set a conditional macro that only raises it if it is down, and vice-versa, requiring two buttons. And (optionally) confirms it to you by a sound or robo-voice. I also use an engine start-up macro to reset the gear status variable, among other things. 2) Add a delay prior to (or during, or after) executing a command by button press. Again, landing gear is a good example of this in IL-2, where it will retract on the ground if you accidentally touch the button. In VA, you just create a short conditional loop that requires you to press AND HOLD the gear up button for say 1 second or else it will not raise the gear. 3) Create your own "shift" function button ANYWHERE on your HOTAS that can effectively double (or quadruple) the number of functions on BOTH your stick AND throttle. Perfect for people with basic sticks. Very simple programming needed, using VA. 4) Fix erratic button hardware problems, such as double-pressing. I gave details on how to use VA in a comment to an earlier video, so I won't repeat here. Let's just say it can be used for a good workaround to some common hardware problems. And so many more that I haven't even discovered yet. At $10 it is a HUGE bargain, IMO.

@@grimreapers You are joking, of course! I have watched many of your videos and you are clearly a logical, intelligent and coherent person. My usage examples above are (at most) intermediate-level within the relative complexity of all possible VA applications. I am NOT a programmer, nor a genius, but I figured it out. You don't even have to look up (nor type in) any of those command lines, you just use the VA UI to select what you need from a list. I am so impressed with the design of this app, as you may have noticed.

I have been using this for some time now, and it is probably the best thing I have purchased for gaming on my PC. You can either programme it to the various switches on your Throttle/Stick or to the operational keys in your keymapping settings screen, or just allocate key combinations on the matrix to carry out a specific action and programme the same combination into the command window in Voice Attack to carry out the same action. I cant recommend it highly enough. It is well worth getting considering its cost, can be used in a variety of different games, and simply aligned to a particular game with all of your recorded commands, from a drop down menu. It does take time, patience and imagination to set it up and train it to follow your instructions, but once done it takes away as many of the mundane key press commands as you wish to programme in. WELL WORTH EVERY PENNY AND MORE SPENT THROUGH STEAM TO PURCHASE IT.

Good point. I totally remember having my hands full (even on FC3 aircraft) just flying the dang thing! Never-mind remembering and searching for each key while taking your eyes away from the outside world, and then letting go of the HOTAS. As a bonus, you can usually use the same command for most of the FC3 modules, because even the various modes operate in a similar fashion and usually have the same key-bind (or can be made the same). Of course, you still have the option to set up a different VA profile for each plane, but I've never needed to do that so far, and later on it's easier to change just one profile compared to a dozen or so.

This is a very good basic tutorial. But you are so deep in multiplayer that you completely forgot the use in single player - where it is actually much more realistic for communication with the outer world = wingmen, ground grew etc. I see the reason for you with all your many modules, but I completely agree with Terry Parker (below). And further more, what about the use in CA, commanding specific units to attack and move? Being able to do this from the cockpit would be amazing - also in multi player (I have not tried that yet). So, a couple of more tutorials on this one please!

Well done, sir. I am at a decision point for VR. Track IR works well enough if I am going to play in a cave far away from those pesky spurious IR sources that baffle it completely, but that process is annoying. I was actually more concerned with getting to keyboard commands in IL-2 GB and the simpler Flaming Cliffs planes in DCS. This tutorial is very relevant to that type of virtual aircraft. The potential for using it for more complex full fidelity planes, allowing one to avoid the often fatal mistake of eyes in the cockpit, is also a big plus.

To me VoiceAttack is most useful to work the comms especially when you are doing air to air refueling, during pre-contact not having to take your hands off the stick or map comms to the stick is absolutely awesome. Requesting a Bogey Dope while working the radar or looking at the SA page or while flicking switches in the F-5 is also incredibly useful. After adding two modifiers to my Thrustmaster T16K I have everything I need on the joystick the only thing that was annoying me was working the comms, solved by VoiceAttack.

I would only use it for communication purposes to keep DCS more realistic. One thing I like about DCS is getting to know the plane and being able to operate it. Using voice attack for engaging weapons, radar, flaps, gears, etc is just lame i think..
@Darrylx4445 жыл бұрын
Fair comment, but I would suggest trying it first. I use it, but NOT directly for many of those things you mentioned (gear, flaps, speed brakes, shooting). Not because that would be "lame", but rather IMO it would be a DISADVANTAGE to do so. It allows many people (like me) using VR to completely avoid having to take off their headset while flying in order to briefly use their keyboards (impossible to bind everything to any HOTAS). I use a trackball mouse to click on virtual switches too (except for FC3 aircraft that don't have any) but that can get very awkward when using the comm menu for A2A re-fueling, for example. Also it has many QOL uses that have nothing to do with voice commands (see my recent comment above). It is just a tool that can be used for "good" or "bad".

In other words, don't forget the words / script.

I have it with a "Press to listen" button so that it is not listening all the time. The button is on my HOTAS, means things don't get enacted without them meaning to! Cap, here's another idea: Seeing as how you make lots of videos, set yourself up some VA commands for the various views (cockpit view, chase view, external view, toggle view, fly-by view, missile/bomb view, etc). Then assign one of your HOTAS buttons to the microphone PTT function in OBS (and even Discord) so that nobody else can hear your VA commands. You can also put in programmable variables as Prefix'es and Suffixes. and group these in to create more complex commands. Ive got an SU33 with a Lituanian accented Girl voice with some Male voices mixed in as well, the more languages you impoprt for VA I find the better choices you have. usually the voice languages are free from Mr Microsoft in Windows to add on. I find VA a godsend if you only fly in VR. in DCS World.

Hey Cap. Thanks for the video. I didn't know this and the others that were mentioned even existed. I can assure you it will be downloaded. I have read all of the comments and the ones that say it would be like cheating really have no idea what they are talking. They need to do some research and learn just how automated aircraft systems have become.
@Darrylx4445 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I mean if it was really "cheating" to use VA, then I guess it is also "cheating" to use the keyboard/HOTAS shortcut bindings too (i.e. a built-in feature of DCS) instead of the virtual cockpit switches via mouse (which are not available in FC3 aircraft anyway). Might as well ban TrackIR and VR then, also. I've never noticed anyone having an actual obvious combat advantage due to VoiceAttack. I CAN understand the "ripple" multi-command-all-in-one example as being much faster than done individually, but again that is really just a lazy bypass for a preparatory setup process that usually (but not always) occurs long before actual combat anyway. And it helps standardize access for newbs (or vets with too many modules to remember the "clickery sequence" each time). We need to balance encouraging new people without discouraging DCS veterans.

"learn just how automated aircraft systems have become" the key is in "have become", So you're retro-fitting voice commands to planes designed in the 70s... Does your research conclude the navy and airforces around the world actually do this? Do they also retro-fit aimbots?

After flying DCS & IL-2 online for thousands of hours, I have NEVER seen/heard anybody say "That jerk is hacking, he must be using VoiceAttack". It just cannot possibly provide a significant enough advantage to make an obvious difference, in this application. And most people wouldn't really want/use it for that purpose either. IMO, the QOL benefits FAR out-weigh any potential negatives. In the end it is just a tool, but a very well-made and very useful one for DCS (especially in VR). I would recommend trying VA first, before making up your mind about it. It has uses in other games or even business software, too.

Voice attack is rubbish. It regularly drops out not recognising commands. Works well for about 30 minuets then stops. The developers don't seem to do anything about it. It is a damn sight more accurate than others when working you can't beat it but when it stops it is frustrating.

Fair comment, but I would suggest trying it first. I use it, but NOT directly for certain things (gear, flaps, speed brakes, shooting).

Right, but: in the Spitfire if I want to instruct my wingman to engage bandits I have to feel around to find my keyboard (I use VR), locate the F1 key, press the F2 key and then locate the F8 key (all using the left hand, since I have the right one on the joystick). If I then want my wingman to manoeuvre in a particular direction I have to find my keyboard again, locate the F1 key, press the F2 key, stop looking at what I was looking at, focus on and read the context menu, chose an F key, locate the move I want him to make, and press the relevant F key. Usually I press the wrong F key and start all over again. If I was flying in a real Spitfire I would just have to press the push to talk button with my left hand and say what I wanted. With Voice Attack I just have to press a button on my joystick and say what I want. This is closer to the real world scenario than the first set-up. For this kind of improvement, that brings me closer to the real world experience, Voice Attack is awesome.

If you're looking for something a bit simpler (and free) for voice commands then check out this tutorial for speech2keys (link to Github where you can get the code and executable in the description) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWjXknealNeXg8k It can also do macros (I programmed this a few years back because my - german - system would not allow me to use english enunciation when using voice attack)

Makes a realistic sim totally unrealistic. Next step is to sit in the cockpit and say "go shoot the bad guys" and drink tea. Makes a mockery of all the effort 3rd party developers have put into these sims. Used with anything that would require a real life voice, then fine. No need for high fidelity cockpits anymore as they're no longer needed... RL pilots never spoke to their aircraft...IMO it's cheating. Frankly I'm dissapointed Cap would even consider using this. The F12 key is bad enough.

@@Darrylx444 I think it's fine tool for anything that uses voice commands in the wild. But sadly, you know as well as I do, there are players out there that will use anything to win. It WILL be abused and in my mind it's cheating to use VA for ANY real life switchable commands. This will grow like a cancer and a lot of people will leave yet another great game due to this.
@Darrylx4445 жыл бұрын
@@filmoperationsgroup I do get your points, but think you may be over-reacting a bit. VoiceAttack was released on Steam over 10 years ago. I personally have been using it for 2 years. Not seeing any "cancer" online in DCS (or any other game) so far. Probably because any possible competitive advantage using VA is so minor. There are at least 2 things to consider: 1) Realism and 2) Competitive Advantage. Further discussion to follow.
