Speaking as an old HIMARS guy with some experience on the M270s back in the day. Shooting down the old cluster rockets isn't spectacularly hard. They are, as mentioned, slow and fat and not all that stealthy. There's a reason MLRS and HIMARS are built around the "shoot and scoot" principle. That is, in an environment where counterbattery is to be expected, they immediately displace after firing to avoid return fire. They're easy to track on radar, they're easy to track visually, and the actual launcher portion of the vehicle is completely unarmored. An MLRS or HIMARS battery will have an extremely wide footprint, with each launcher having several hide points to fall back to, and they're spread out so a lucky shot can't disable the whole battery at once. You could probably track the rockets in flight with WWII vintage radar equipment if you had to, and all it takes is a single well placed round to turn a rocket into expensive but useless fireworks. Their strength is in numbers. Not even the most sophisticated air defense system is going to stop every single rocket, and a single rocket getting through is going to ruin a lot of days and make it that much easier for the next stonk to slip rockets through the screen. The newer guided rockets are a lot harder to hit. They carry a lot of speed, and they attack from near vertical. Since this isn't a War Thunder forum, I can't get into too much detail about exactly how fast they go, how high they fly, or how long the range is, but I can confidently say that the answer to all three questions is "very." Saturation fire against enemy AA is going to wear it out quickly, especially with skilled crews and a crack fire control team. As an added bonus, they are absolutely terrifying for any planes trying to share the airspace. The chances of a rocket hitting a plane are low, but never nonzero, and at the speeds the guided rockets travel, they're hard to pick up visually. It was always fun to listen for the faint notes of terror over the radio when friendly pilots realized we were shooting. If you absolutely, positively need to gain control of the airspace in a hurry, HIMARS is certainly a viable option.

Rumor has it, they have a trajectory and velocity very similar to that of a typical Grad rocket, and this is making them very difficult to intercept, at least for the moment, because they are blending in with all the other unguided rockets in the air, being fired by both sides, and the S-300 interceptors, other than the Pantsir, are much too expensive to waste on intercepting an unguided Grad rocket every time one is fired. This may very well be by design. Supposedly, however, the person who mentioned this also claimed the advantage could be temporary, as it may require only a software update to the S-300/S-400 for it to be able to quickly differentiate the HIMARS rockets from the other systems in the air. The S-300s/S-400s have supposedly probably not yet received instructions on what to look for, how to tell it's a HIMARS rocket, and once they has been, the radar should be able to classify the system quickly and accurately. On the other hand, the S-400 radar does have an upper limit to how many targets it can track and classify at once. Seems like it was 100 or so. So if they fire 120 grad rockets when they also fire the two PrSMs at the Kerch bridge... that could still pose a problem, even with a software update... so they say.
@gatling2162 жыл бұрын
@@Gabriel_McMillan No one's been dumb enough to let me play with a Grad, so I have to go by what I read. The arcs are superficially similar though, so that would make a certain amount of sense. That said, GMLRS is much faster than the average Grad and has a higher service ceiling, so telling the two apart wouldn't be all that difficult if you knew what to look for. Catching one, I think, would be a different story. Once they nose over, there really isn't that much time to react and it's a relatively small target.
@pabis68172 жыл бұрын
Have you heard that the himars that the US sent over may have the IFF transponders that communicate with the S-400. Hence why Ukraine getting a full S-400 battery was quite the gift? It could be they are saturating but I haven’t heard about Russia attempting to shoot down the himars. Would make a lot of sense to me that they are still using Soviet era transponders with rudimentary encryption. Idk just food for thought. Also it would be irony on top of irony given the turkey-US f-35/ s-400 debacle

On Artillery, including MLRS: - Artillery targets an area or point target. A point target is a square with a 50m diameter. An MLRS that can "kill a grid" means an MLRS unit can target an area of 1km by 1km and put one piece of shrapnel in every square meter. The area depends on the number of launchers and the type of system. The type of rounds fired, fuse settings, the terrain and the types of cover all dramatically affect the battle damage effect of a fire mission. - Theoretically, SAMs ought to be able to engage MLRS rockets. You'd overwhelm the system really easy though and they aren't designed for the task. I assume it's just not modelled in the game for those reasons. - Realistically you'd keep strategic and theatre-level assets out of artillery range (insofar feasible due to operational circumstances) and you switch positions every so often. Stationary systems are dead systems. - Gun AA-systems (and tube artillery for that matter) can engage direct fire ground targets. I remember our boys training that with both the M109 SpArt as well as the Flakpanzer Gepard. The 2A38M 30mm gun on the Pantsir-S1 is the same gun as on the 2S6M Tunguska, a system designed for front-line Very Short Range Air Defence and is extremely capable of engaging ground targets. It'll also run out of ammunition excessively fast (RoF!) making it a terrifying but very short-lived asset. - SAMs can't target artillery grenades. Not a chance.
@tommy18082 жыл бұрын
Several SAM systems have demonstrated the ability to reliable hit artillery rounds. Heck, Sea Wulf did 114mm rounds in the late 70s/early 80s. Iron dome was even specified to hit artillery shells. Just no one is doing that since it has you run out of money real fast shooting missiles at shells.

You are referring to the CEP, in which out of 10 rounds fired, 5 will hit within that certain radius.
@CyrrusNL2 жыл бұрын
@@CombatIneffective Nope, CEP is something completely different. I am referring to the area and single fire unit can effectively engage. For example, a platoon of PzH-2000's can affect an area of 300 x 150 meters. Artillery engages areas, not single targets unless firing guided rounds.

They can theoretically see them, they just don't know what to do with them once they see them and are effectively sitting ducks as things stand currently. And it's not a quick process to update their systems. Western systems have had 20+ years in Iraq and Afghan to get good at tracking rockets, mortars etc. so Western systems fair much better against something like rocket arty.

No they havent, no himars has been launched anywhere near s400s. And pantsir and tor systems knock them down like flies.

It's actually realistic the infantry got that close to shoot the S-400 tubes. Didn't you see the video of Russian infantry shooting Ukraininan S-300 tubes at point blank with an RPK and blowing themselves up?

The S300 and S400 can not shoot himar rockets. This is based on real life. Ukraine has been using himars to take out s300 and s400 sites.

The S400 was technically designed as an anti aircraft, anti missle system, but it provides little in terms of AMD. Tor and Pantsir are supposed to be able to defend against HIMARS, I suspect their radar is not as good as advertised. Ukraine struck sites guarded by them and were successful.
@jamison8842 жыл бұрын
Just some quick comments. So far in Ukraine, there aren't reports of Russia successfully shooting down any HIMARS. One YT'er in the US Army as an anti-tank expert explained S-400 radar operators are likely to be able to manually pick up the rockets on radar, but there isn't a ton of time to report it down the line and get launch authorization, and they likely don't have software updates (and may not for a while) for the radar to automatically identify the contacts as these rockets. As for the Iron Dome, it's a C-RAM defense system with relatively cheap and small interceptor missiles that also take out mortar rounds in addition to rockets. I believe Iron Dome is also much more advanced as far as its quick automated identification capabilities, as it's dialed in to counter incoming rocket and mortar attacks at all times, from specific directions based on the battery locations, and analyzes the trajectory to only attack munitions predicted to land in a designated area with a population or important infrastructure present. To support this assumption (that it is coded for very specific mission sets) there were a few batteries sold to the US and deployed in Guam and Japan, but the US decided not to acquire them in larger quantities due to the effort required to integrate it into the overall US IADS (missile defense programs, such as Aegis, THAAD, and NASAMS). The S-400 missiles are obviously huge and expensive, so I wonder how many they would be willing to launch even if they were shooting them down right now.

what? maybe take CNN's knob out of your mouth once in a while. the vast majority of HIMARS are being shot down if you actually listen to the news from both sides. Yesterday 5 out of a 6 salvo was shot down already near Kherson. Stop spreading b.s. The reports of this are everywhere but apparently you only listen to ONE source

@@AB-ng7go First off, I don't watch CNN or any cable news, so screw off. If Russia is shooting them down, I simply haven't read those reports. Simple as that. So, instead of being an utter douchebag, you can link to reports stating otherwise.
