And that's the thing, once you both don't fight each other, you make sweet helicopter love! You saw it here, the butter soft flight, where you don't even need a hand on the stick, you can do all kinds of abris programming while the heli flies itself.

I really liked this video. Brought back a lot of memories. I flew AH-64A and AH-64D Longbows for years in the Army. We called the "Trimmer", Force Trim Interrupt. The controls on this aircraft are so similar to the Apache, it's scary. Several of the guys commented how difficult flying one of these things can be. If it's any consolation, it takes a little over 2 years for the Uncle Sam to create a "Combat Ready" Apache pilot. Keep trying and have fun.

I was just going to comment about force trim release on the cyclic stick and how it works, basically uses a magnetic brake to hold the controls in the desired position. Ex Apache maintainer

when you have the way point deselected but still have the diamond on the heading tape it is because you have the heading hold auto pilot channel enabled. the helicopter will hold whatever the heading is when you release the trim. if you disable the heading hold channel you can turn wherever you like. alternately, enable FD mode and that is the same thing as holding the trim button without actually having to hold the button.

Hello Cap. Maybe you guys do these videos just for the fun of it. But I have to say that this last series of tutorials on the Ka-50 has had a good influence on me. I own this module since 2010, and even after having read the manual, all times I tried I ended up in a big ball of fire. Gave up. Never looked back. Tried helos again with the Huey years later. Anyway, then I watched your video. Something inside clicked. I tried again following your tips. And they worked. Now I can fly this thing anywhere I please. And found out that this helo is way stable than the Huey and way easier to fly. From a forgotten module, this is in my top three preferred modules to fly, right along with the A-10 and the Harrier. Well done and thanks Cap.

here here! I've also had the Ka 50 module since about the same time. The trimming concept seems backwards to that of a plane. This one video has changed my experience of the Ka50 from "it's hard to fly" to "I'm the terror of the skies" this bird will get used a lot more often now. Thank you!

Great video! 1 Quick suggestion When flying and hovering on autopilot and changing heading, Also works when slaved to Shkval. bottom right Four autopilot hold buttons (Pitch, Roll, Heading and Altitude): -Disengage Heading hold on your autopilot. -rotate to new heading. -Engage Heading hold. The HDG diamond should center at your new HDG. -If your slaved to Shkval, this will rotate you back on target when HDG hold is reactivated. I recommend Mapping those 4 buttons (Or at least the HDG hold) I Use this method to quickly change location without the helicopter fighting your controls or readjusting your Pitch, Roll and Alt Trims.

I was never completely sure the "proper" way to fly a Ka-50... I remember reading (I think in the manual) that riding the trimmer was frowned upon, but wasn't sure how else to do it without constantly switching the autopilots off and on... I ended up just switching on FD and learning to fly that way. This does seem like the best, way, though, so going to re-learn to fly using this method. Despite being an old module, it's still a great helicopter. Only real complaint is that a lot of the stuff in the cockpit is 2D, and while it looks fine on a regular screen it's really obvious in VR, so looking forward to the announced update for that.
@zzodr
@zzodr 5 жыл бұрын
I think it was something to do with the type of hardware you had, if you had a force feedback stick or not - the method with trimmer was different.
@Maeyanie
@Maeyanie 5 жыл бұрын
@@zzodr If I recall (which is questionable) the "not riding the trimmer" thing was for the actual helicopter, it would wear out the trimmer controls faster. It could also apply to FFB sticks, for the same reason. Maybe in the real thing the way the controls work is different, and the autopilot applies force to the stick, rather than changing the resulting control input the way DCS does. Or maybe that was just saying not to fly the helicopter with the trimmer held all the time, and only use it for relatively-brief changes the way Cap does here... I'm really not sure, and don't exactly know a whole lot of Kamov pilots to ask.
@UMSLdragon
@UMSLdragon 4 жыл бұрын
@@Maeyanie Judging by how I've seen the stick move in the simulation I'm going to assume that in real life the pilot only had to click the trimmer button after making changes. Reason being, I assume, in real life the trimmer button would "create a new center point" for the stick and stay in that position where trimmer was last applied. Where in our simulator we apply trim adjustments and the in game stick stays/goes back to where the trimmer was centered but our IRL game stick springs always put it back to center. Which is what always made it hell for me to trim. Did i explain that right?
@MarvinCZ
@MarvinCZ 4 жыл бұрын
@@UMSLdragon That seems like what other helicopters, like the UH-1H, do. It doesn't sound quite right for the Ka-50, where the trimmer is more like autopilot input.

I think its better to start learning the ka-50 with the FD since its the most logical way to fly a helicopter (compared to other helicopters). The only time when I don't use FD is when I'm doing an auto hover or when I want the autopilot to follow a route.
@Stahlwollvieh
@Stahlwollvieh 5 жыл бұрын
I don't fully agree. Just using FD left and right is not going to teach you anything about working with the autopilots. Better to get used to it early while being aware that FD is an option when necessary imo.
@0Ignition0
@0Ignition0 5 жыл бұрын
@@Stahlwollvieh Why do you start learning the ka-50 using the autopilot? Its better to start knowing how to fly the ka-50 like any other helicoter and THEN learn to use the no FD.
@Stahlwollvieh
@Stahlwollvieh 5 жыл бұрын
@@0Ignition0 Well do it as you see fit. But chances are if you start by just flying in FD it will get a habit that's hard to get rid off. There's a reason those autopilots are there, that's because the Ka50 has a lot to do for a single person. They pretty much define everything you do outside of FD. Might as well get used to them early.
@NullFaser
@NullFaser 5 жыл бұрын
Isnt it even easier? Holding the trim means you cant use your thumb for something Else.(in CAPs Control setup) and i kinda dont want the Chopper to correct my heading everytime i let loose of the rudder.
@0Ignition0
@0Ignition0 5 жыл бұрын
@@NullFaser FD off is best for long semi straight flights and auto hover. If you fly without FD you're "fighting" the helicopter whenever you want to maneuver and must hold trim during the transition. Its really counterproductive and you loose control of the helicopter since you can't do fine adjustments freely.

Hi GR. I just purchased the KA-50 as I wanted to try out a helicopter in DCS. So the collective lever. Is it basically the throttle or are their engine throttle and collective inputs? As always, your help is greatly appreciated. Incidentally, the Reapers T-Shirt I bought is still going strong. The colour hasn't faded and the image is still like new, no cracks or wear. Even after lots of washes.
@djviperx
@djviperx 3 жыл бұрын
You don't usually touch the throttle on a helo unless there is an emergency, in the kamov is the 2 yellow "lollipops" on your left. I recommend you map the collective to your HOTAS throttle, because is what basically you are going to use to move up/down. Is like WW2 planes, RPMs are more or less constant, what you change is the angle of the blades, that is what collective does. Cyclic changes only the pitch of certain blades to make the helo move fwd/back/right/left, collective changes the pitch of all blades at once making the helo move up/down. Im far from helo expert, but hope that my explanation helped you to understand this marvelous machines a bit better :)

This was my very first DCS module, it was a fucking _nightmare._ I remember it had like a 600+ page manual. Perhaps picking a chopper as a first attempt was a bad idea but I couldn’t even get more than a few meters off the ground before a quick death came. And then ABRIS? Forget it.
