Hi CAP, about those 2x 30 sec on the IGLA, there are 2 small bottles of coolant for each missile, if you arm it, the seal on one of them is broken and can´t be resealed again. If you reset it with more than 30 seconds left, the second bottle is spared and can be used later.

and about the Alignment, IIRC, after Caging, and a coarse & fine Leveling of the Gyro-Platform to the horizon (sensing the Earth's Gravity by Accelerometers), the INU can perform Alignment for one of three HSI headings switch position : 1- Magnetic (slaved-gyro)"MK", sensing the Earth's Electro-Magnetic Field by Flux Valve. 2- True (gyro-compass)"ГПК", sensing the Earth's Rotation by Accelerometers. 3- Grid (directional-gyro)"3K", slewing the HSI card to the desired heading manually after computing & adding the GRIVATION to the RUNAWY's Magnetic Heading (assuming lined up with centerline), this mode should be used @ High LATITUDE above 60° when the Earth's Rotation is too slow to be sensed, & the Earth's Electro-Magnetic Field dip vertically and become unreliable. the question with this 3rd mode is how to put manually the computed heading❔ well, after cross-checking some similarities of digital CDU Vids on YT, my guess would be as follows: Flinck the heading switch to manual mode > Dial PVI-800 MSU to ENTER > Push the TrueHead/Time/Dis button, input a three-digit number of heading in the upper display window, and press the yellow Enter button > Press Normal or Precise Align button & waiting for it to turn-off, the Lower Display Window shows the minutes remaining until finish alignment > the HSI start turn to the entered heading (speed of rotation depend on Normal or Precise Alignment) > then back the MSU to NAV & Fly. While flying under Manual Heading mode, bear in mind the Directional-Gyro suffer from Drifts, to counter them you should update the Latitude Corrector (North or South) & the Magnetic Deviation Compensator Knobs as necessary, and these value could be taken from ABRIS (for both) NAV ⇾ MAP ⇾ INFO ⇾ then check MRK & DECL infos, or Present Position Button “φ/λ” on PVI-800 (just for Latitude). check ATT IRS mode part : kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6jclXWCl5elnck

In reality 1 and a half kilo of explosive does a lot more damage than you think.
@Fiztex553 Жыл бұрын
It's a bit of luck where the projectiles will go after this thing explodes too. In DCS shooting down a helicopter with manpads is ridiculously difficult if it is dispensing flares, so I'd better go with a long burst from a sniping gun against air targets than this missile.
@92HazelMocha Жыл бұрын
@@Fiztex553 irl they should go for the engine since that's what the heat source is, however in DCS they just go for the aircraft as a whole resulting in non-lethal hits. Igla will down fixed wing aircraft in DCS pretty much every time, but right now Vikhrs are much better for shooting down enemy helos.
@Fiztex553 Жыл бұрын
@@92HazelMocha The tracking system will bring the missile close to the engine, but then it's all just up to a contact fuse (most manpads have contact fuse, Igla is actually an exception having also magnetic fuse besides a contact one) and there's a lot of luck connected to it. Based on images from Ukraine we often see manpads hitting the pylon, the wing, tail or whatever was in the way of it getting to the exhaust, and sometimes they just miss it at all or even fail to explode, unfortunately this all is not modelled in DCS, missiles indeed just go for a center of mass somehow with some spread around the aircraft, and then there is a chance for it to go for a flare depending on some "temperature" difference. And it always explodes, which is not very realistic for a contact fuse 🙂 Also, all IR missiles in DCS somehow seem to have proximity fuses (in SP only AFAIK) making them extremely dangerous. On the other hand, having the temperature of the helicopter exhaust much lower than the temperature of the flare, it almost always does go for flares in the sim, especially on the initial stage of the launch - this way it balances a bit of manpads behaviour. My 9Xs were beaten so many times by some AI Hinds or Mi8s, it's not even funny, I always gun AI helicopters in DCS because of this.
@92HazelMocha Жыл бұрын
@@Fiztex553 Yeah they really need to rework short range fox2's; aim9x and most modern fox's have great flare rejection built in, and the proxy fuzes (which I actually didn't know about until right now) could even be the reason that the damage manpads do to helo's is so low. Tbh that goes for the thermal signatures of aircraft as a whole in dcs, targeting the center of mass of helo's and not modeling heat on the aircraft fuselage due to friction. I was hoping to see some of this in 2.8, but I'll guess we'll have to wait.

countermeasures for a laser guided missile: a large cloud of IR/UV opaque smoke for tanks, deployed by the smoke grenade launchers. For helicopters, no such luck, find the nearest hard cover and put it between you and the laser source.
@Fiztex553 Жыл бұрын
Normally, maneuvering works against ATGMs shot by the AI the best, as they are not designed to hit an airborne maneuvering target. Even flanking will do most of the time, so having the direction of attack in such details as BS3 MWS provide is great. Won't work against people though as a smart thing to do though is to guide a missile close to the target first and start illuminating the target itself only a couple seconds before it hits leaving enemy no time to react. I was hitting straight moving Sharks with laser mavericks like that - tricky, but still possible in no threat environment, lots of fun 🙂 Not sure it will work with Vikhr though, as the tracking system is quite different.
@draeath Жыл бұрын
@@Fiztex553 Not sure how the mavericks work. Aren't the Vikhr beam-riders? They're not chasing a dot, but steering by looking backwards toward the launcher and trying to steer into the direction it's lasing?
@Fiztex553 Жыл бұрын
@@draeath You are guessing right, maverick has a seeker in the head and follows a point, when Vikhr has it in the back and doing spirals around the beam trying to understand it's position in the laser cone. That's why Vikhr doesn't care much about smoke cover and will still fly where you point it, but Vikhr targeting process illuminates many things around the target (so called laser cone) giving them a warning about illumination if they have such system installed.

Laser and (active) radar homing missiles paint their target, and that can be detected and localized. You can also generally tell if it's a terminal scan (vs just ranging/search or pre-launch lock) from various changes to the signal (higher frequency radio, faster sweeps, etc) that help it stay on target and attempt to defeat countermeasures. Note that in both cases the emitter is not necessarily the projectile! The projectile can just be "listening" while the launcher carries the heavy and energy-hungry transmission equipment. Thermal seekers or passive radar (anti-radiation) munitions are impossible to directly observe, I believe. You (or theoretically some sort of sensor) has to see the actual projectile or it's exhaust and infer that it's heading towards you. ---- Getting actual information on this stuff I would imagine is troublesome, it's the sort of thing that's going to be kept classified / controlled as tightly as possible.
