Hey guys! I just read through your comments at time of posting this comment. Your feedback overall seems to be to keep doing unscripted battles. The frustration from you guys seems to be from where we are making clerical errors, using units wrong etc. Due to real life stuff and GR commitments at the moment there isn't really any spare time to practice, so we'll just have to blast on as we are, slowly learning from errors.

Hi Cap! In the video you mentioned that no matter what orders you gave, the Sturgeon just wouldn't fire a salvo of 8, and you thought it was a bug. But actually that is not the case. The reason why the Sturgeon can only fire 4 at once is that it only has 4 torpedo tubes, and the torpedo tubes take time to be reloaded. You have to wait for the crew to reload the tubes, which takes longer than 10 minutes to fire the next salvo.
@jamison884Күн бұрын
This is true for the attack subs, as they fire the Harpoons via the torpedo tubes. However, for cruise missile (SSGN) and ballistic missile (SSBN) submarines, the missiles should fire from the VLS cells and not be tied to the torpedo tube timer. Cap didn't show the part of the mission where he clicked on the weapons and then the target, but if you look at the actual Harpoon launches (at 7:18), they're coming from the VLS rather than the torpedo tubes.

I looked closer, and it was just the angle of the camera at that moment, as the Harpoon is being launched from one of the tubes on the right. Thanks!

I served on a Sturgeon, she was a 4 banger. So you should expect a decent reload period after the first 4. It took about 20 minutes per tube. The game doesn't take into account moving the weapons around the room or that you have a reload teams on the port and starboard sides of the torpedo room. Hope that helps.😁

As a late 80’s Sturgeon sailor, SSN 637, 1985-89. I really like watching these videos. I do see many inaccuracies regarding submarine tactics, capabilities and weapons and I am ok with that. You mentioned you have someone in your group that deals with ASW ops and said he can’t speak of some of the tactics used, he is correct about that and I thank him for the OPSEC. THE same goes for us sub sailors. Many things we just don’t speak of when it comes to tactics and capabilities, even from back then as some may still be used today, possibly compromising our men and women at sea.

I think doing seapower might have attracted a new audience, unfamilar with the mil-sim professional, perfect missions that GR always run. You have to remember that because no-one in GR ever crashes on take-off or landing, never friendly fires, never opens their cockpit, never breaks their landing gear, never collides in formation, never jettisons weapons instead of bags, never provides laugh out loud entertainment, the viewingtons expect the same in SeaPower.

Funny thing is the US converted 4 of it's Ohio Class SSBNs into SSGNs in the early 2000's. (2002 to 2007) Each one can carry up to 154 Tomahawk missiles. I assume these could be the anti ship variant if the occasion needed it.

The Ohio class actually started as SSBN's. They weren't converted to SSGN's to carry that many TLAM's until the early to mid 2000's. Then only a limited number were converted. The rest remained as SSBN's. They are soon to be replaced by the Columbia class in the next 10 years. The Ohio class SSGN's have had their mission at least partially assumed by the Viriginia class with their Virginia Payload Module.

Dear Cap, I don't know how KZbin works, i can only say remember how this channel got popular. People watch your long, unscripted, partially goofy DCS videos because they are highly entertaining. People love the banter between you guys, the technical lore you explain, and we love to see you cock up like earlier today when you blew out the engine of your MiG-21. For what it's worth, that question you posted, at least to me, seemed more like a "do you try do debug missions ahead of time", more than asking for the video to be scripted. Which kinda makes sense running a game like Sea Power that's just early access where a lot of stuff can go wrong unintentionally and beyond your control. However, i am really happy watching you guys running Sea Power missions. Please keep doing it at your own leisure as you see fit, mark buggy scenarios for a later attempt after bug fixes, and run missions that are fun for you. If someone doesn't like a particular one, they can skip it. Don't give in to viewer pressure. 400+K people appreciate your and all the GR crew's work. I don't remember which of your DCS clips first appeared on my recommended views, but i did a lot of catching up and i really appreciate your content for it's entertainment and informational value. Ok, as a former ASW Sonar technician from the 90s, I can make a few comments. A carrier battle group will ALWAYS have ASW assets airborne, surface and subsurface. There were destroyers and frigates, with towed array 'passive sonar, trailing about a mile behind the surface ship at various depths - sonar, range - classified. VERY, accurate. The Submarines had the sub surface variant of a towed array - range - far far further, and even more accurate, ( able to fire without an active ping ). The battlegroup carrier had airborne ASW assets with sonobouys and dipping sonar, each destroyer and frigate had Helos, 1 or 2 on a frigate and 2 on a destoyer as well as the carrier. The Oscars from the Soviets, were a serious threat and were taken very seriously. IF this were a situation of a hot war, there would have been P3 orions with sonar, magnetic, and other sensors, with weapons. SSGNs were a soviet thing, US fleets, had Fast attack subs with VLS with cruise missiles, and through the torpedo tubes. THE nightmare for a battlegroup - an SSGN or even a SSN laying in wait, the fleet moving over it, and the sub popping up INTO the center of the battlegroup...detected or not, that one sub can kill the entirety of the battlegroup, by being under the carrier. and then kill the carrier last. Yes, Oscars were a threat.

Cap, Cap, you’ve got to read the descriptions right there on the screen; 21:35, says right there “A hypothetical modification….”. It’s mimicking what the US did with 4 older Ohio class boomers, remove the ballistic missiles and replace with 7 Tomahawks per tube giving a ridiculous magazine depth of 16x7 or 112 warshots in this hypothetical case. The Ohio SSGN converted 22 of its 24 tubes for 154 warshots each.

The Sturgeon class (and the LA iirc) only had four Torpedo tubes. As the Harpoons are being fired from the aforementioned tubes, they can only fire 4 at a time, and would have to reload before firing another Salvo, which can (to my limited knowledge) take upwards of 20 minutes.
@FunkyMonkey-oj9mdКүн бұрын
Not sure if it was mentioned before me, but part of the reason of how you would know what class of ship you are following is by the shape of the screws. When a ship out of the water in dry dock and the screws are exposed, you can do math to know what they sound like. For this reason, when you look at pictures of a sub in dry dock it will have covers over the screws to prevent adversaries from knowing what that sub would sound like and be able to track it easily while its submerged.

@SgtTechComКүн бұрын
vanilla sea power is completely unbalanced in favor of the Russians. Nothing the US has can hope to stop SS-N-19 or backfire attacks. And many US ships have the completely wrong missile types. Like Kidd's with SM-1s, lol...the Kidds in USN service had SM-2's from day 1.

Commenting on your live missions. I'll make this comment from personal experience. During an Operation Order (OpOrder), you receive the threats in the area, POI's, obviously the objective of the mission, etc. ALL of the details you need to succeed. All of that goes out the window when you leave the wire, or someone shoots at you. Controlled chaos at best Just like you guys do at the beginning of your live missions. You show the threats, etc. I think you guys do a great job. DCS or Sea Power never take into account the Human factor when it comes to naval damage control

Hey cap, the reason people complain is simply the framing of the video from the title. People are coming in expecting traditional GR videos, which while not scripted, generally the scope is known beforehand. It's just a mismatch in expectations, not necessarily a legit criticism of the content. It's expecting too much (I wish I were joking) to hope people will actually watch the intro, haha. I think if you were to adjust the titles (and descriptions) to be more specific, you'd get different (better) responses. Ie something that communicates "Reacting in real time to unknown threats" so that people know that you won't know what to expect.

I think it's his total lack of understanding of even the simplest concepts like, "a submarine with 4 torpedo tubes can only salvo 4 missiles" that is a big part of people's frustration. I mean just do a *little* research before hitting the start button on a sea power scenario.

Officially the Los Angeles class maximum depth is 650 feet, but they can obviously go deeper than that, and it's reported in other sources they can dive as deep at 1475 feet, which is also (likely) conservative. They do have vertically and horizontally launched tomahawk missiles. The VLS's were added to later variants of the class. In the Ohio class there were several that were originally meant to be Nuclear Missile carrying boats, but with the end of the Cold War were converted to be able to launch up to 154 Tomahawk's and a complement of Harpoon's that are horizontally launched from the torpedo tubes.

Personally I'm happy with where the channel is. I don't think the AI flagging your videos is doing it because it doesn't like that you make mistakes... Cap, not an ASW guy here but I know enough to make a bit of an educated guess. So a CSG is always doing ASW searches, the CSG generally knows where they are trying to go, and submarines are relatively slow. If there is one thing that is unrealistic about the ASW stuff you have done thus far, it's that you start off with no idea of anything going on around you. In real life, your group would be in waters that had been screened, and ideally screened recently enough in a large enough area that a submarine isn't capable of getting there undetected (if at all). So the people doing the ASW fight don't need to search EVERYTHING, they just need to drive that cleared wedge further along their intended route. So getting that Los Angeles 30 miles in tow is the hard part, and having a diesel boat materialize inside of your formation is a lot easier than actually having to drive it there.

I enjoy watching them. However, for the matter, I think they are saying unlike with DCS you don't have the necessary base level of knowledge with ships and Sea Power to do competent blind runs yet. With DCS even if it's an unknown scenario you are familiar with all the pieces. Here you aren't. BTW, the Kirov's three helicopters is in a belowdecks hangar with an elevator, just like a mini-carrier. Not that I mind, but just suggesting what they are getting at. For this battle, the realistic threat the Soviets would have suffered from a pre-VLS US submarine attack would be only 3 Harpoons because the US tends to send subs in alone, not in packs. And they are liable to leave one tube loaded with a torpedo just in case. So the salvo size is only three. That might still be enough if they can do it stealthily (for example, the Soviets were in EMCON, and you can set the seeker to activate say only ten miles out so they can't react - these are also some options you don't have in Sea Power).

The Benjamin Franklin class is there as a placeholder for the Ohio class SSGN which were refitted from their role as SSBN. Every taskforce has a ship or multiple ships in the rear position which are generally good ASW platforms, they are there for the sole purpose of hunting the subs trying to hunt from the rear, and usually a third of your total ASW capabilities would be deployed at a given time, for example the Kirov carries three helos under the rear deck, if the ships was to sail alone, at a given time, one helo would be scouting for threats, one would be returning or making its way to the designated area, and one helo would be reloading its bouys and torps in the hanger.

I personally love the videos as they are. Although the long videos are a little much for a normal busy day to watch, I make sure I remember to watch it when I have more time. I find the unscripted missions done by someone else genuinely interesting as you don't know what is happening. I appreciate your efforts and hope they remain feasible to do. I look forward to the next one!

Cap you do you, that's why we all subscribed. You do a fantastic job showing just how unpredictable war is and that no plan is perfect. Keep up the great content and ignore the haters.

I am a military enthusiast and amateur historian. I just enjoy it and I read a lot about the topic. I was also in the USN aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt from 86 when she was commissioned to 90 right before Desert Storm brewed up. One of my favorite authors is/was Tom Clancy. I have read all his fiction and nonfiction books, which is a treasure trove of knowledge. He does deep dives into a specific weapon system, like a the Ohio class submarines, carrier groups and so on. I also was heavily into the milsim Harpoon, Harpoon II and III. To me, this is like Harpoon IV. I love it. I also am passionate about DCS and it’s currently my time vampire. It sucks all my time up like my life depends on it! When mission creating with the Harpoon sim, you must know something about how modern warfare works to make a believable mission. Just like in DCS. Cap has created some of the best DCS missions ever placed on KZbin. He’s had Sea Power now for what, a month? Cut the man some slack. Show some class and support the man. He had said many times that he loves input and feedback from his audience, so give him some. That’s not an open invitation for stupid hate comments or snarky remarks. You’re part of the problem, not the solution.

I like every one of your videos and try to comment whenever I have something worth saying. I genuinely liked the long-play Seapower episode and the format. That said it is something new new, not only due to it being Seapower instead of DCS, but also it was your first "mission" rather than a "scenario" which is what we'd seen of Seapower so far. Cheers!

I agree, the unscripted battles are fun to watch when someone else made the mission and none of us including you playing the scenario have no idea what's happening. This really is more interesting than replaying a mission where you know what happens and when and deploy assets in advance

Hi cap, personally I love the long tactical battles you do it shows the true scale of war I don’t understand why people are hating on them keep up the great work I’ve been watching your videos every day for the last 2 years when i get home your videos specially the long battles are the thing I look forward to most

I love the videos in which you try to learn how to play the game in the middle of the mission. It makes the whole video much better and funnier. I would imagine it makes it more realistic as well because in a battle nothing ever goes perfectly and many mistakes, sometimes costly, are made too. Anyways, keep doing what you’re doing!

Yo Cap, ignore the guys that hate the longer videos. Those are awesome. It really does encapsulates the entire battle, the tactical deployments, thinking on the fly, getting surprised, etc Also, per the mod, the Benjamin Franklin is a stand in for the Ohio which came out in '76 but isn't in the game. I'm surprised how well your game ran when you launched 90 missiles. My game just came to craaaaaaaawl. Also found out like you these missiles for sure do not de-conflict lol keep it up

I know many people now a days like everything to be short and condensed but I don't think that's why most of us are here who regularly watch your guy's videos. I think scripting everything would completely ruin the point keep up the interesting work!

Hello Cap!!!! Depending on which side of the fence you are on, it is always cool to watch the good guys win. If you scripted all of the battles, that we win every time, what is the point of watching them, when you know the outcome? I like watching your videos because, like we say in the USA, (KEEP IT REAL!!!) LOL!!! You’re doing a great job, don’t change anything!!! CHEERS!!!! PS: Even though it is a video game, I still get pissed when we lose! LOL!!!!

The people watching that want a scripted battle aren’t true gamers, they just want to watch a movie where the good guys steam roll everything. The kind of people that play every game on easy mode. Keep doing what you’re doing, it’s the reason why a lot of us watch you over the other guys. 👍🏻

I agree with Cap about scripted battles being boring. I like and watch GR because they are real, genuine, human reactions. There may be a lot of comments requesting pre-determined content, but I'm sure the silent majority like things just the way they are.

Total agree Cap about how you are doing all your missions. keep doing what you are doing. I can think of anything more boring myself than knowing the outcome. It’s making the mistakes and learning from them that advances the skill!

I'm with everyone else saying keep the long ones. You bring in factual information so not only entertained but also learning. I always make time to sit and just watch them. Haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.

I like some of the longer missions. I watched 154 yesterday and was frustrated by the loss of the 2 warships right off the bat, but the surprise added a level of unpredictable tension. Like you said, you don't want to win every time. I don't want to watch that any more than you want to make it. Keep doing what you're doing, the formula is correct.

I love the live battles. Plenty of others do videos similar. I know one breaks their videos up into 20 or 30 minute sections, releasing them over a couple of days (maybe cutting out some stuff, but I like to see it all). It might but help with the algorithm.

Cap, you're all good. First of all, on behalf of the valued viewers, I must state that whatever is most enjoyable for you should matter just as much, if not more, than the audience. If you personally don't enjoy what you're doing, we'd be able to sense it, and this would never last anyway. Beyond that, I also think you're correct that going into missions and not knowing exactly what will happen provides the most entertainment and the most realism. I believe any uptick in comments similar to the comment featured was specific to the recent video where two ships were lost early in the mission and it took a few minutes to notice and begin countering the threat. I think there was simply some valued viewer confusion and also a feeling of frustration where some viewers saw your ship's contact on the map go black minutes before it was acknowledged in the video. I'd relate this sensation to some people who watch horror films and can't stop themselves from yelling at the screen, "Turn around! There's a wild, aroused Super Cap right behind you!" This viewer response was due to the game failing to alert you to those two ships taking damage/losing contact. Whether that's due to a game bug, disabling the AI voice notifications for recording purposes (which would normally say something like "We've been hit!"), or not having the event log window open, it doesn't really matter, as long as you can try and improve the effectiveness of damage notifications going forward. Thank you!

I like the longer videos, it’s more realistic and keeps me watching. The people complaining are the same people who want war sims to favour them %100 of the time and will play on easy so they can dominate every match. It’s way better the way you’re doing it in my opinion, either way I’ll still watch you!. Keep up the good work Reapers!.

Passive detection and classification of vessels is based more on the sound "fingerprint" and not just how loud it is. Each class of ship/sub has its own fingerprint common to all ships in the class. Each vessel can also have mods/upgrades unique to some vessels in the class that will further ID it. Machinery noises, screw design, rudders, propulsion plants, desalinization plants, rotating equipment, etc, all help ID a contact very accurately.

When playing the old Harpoon Classic game from the 1990s, I would have 50% of the Vikings patrol 20-50 nm from the main formation, and the helos closer to the formation. I would set land-based, fixed wing ASW to patrol >200 nm from base (in the formation editor) or I would have them patrol choke points (e.g., between Faroe Islands and Iceland). Then I’d wait for contacts from patrolling subs, MAD or SOSUS, and send airborne assets to intercept. The units sent on intercept missions would be replaced from the carrier or group. Typically that balanced response time and fuel range. I do wonder if the old Harpoon game allowed more Nimrods or Orions than were actually operational in the North Atlantic.

axshually...once the attacks start you should scramble everything. Helos and airplanes full of fuel on your ships makes for a lot of big badaboom. Prior to the attacks, i agree with you though.
