Hi guys, by this time, some of our Leander Frigates were carrying Seawolf, a very efficient missile system, as fitted to the type 22's
@KortanaDCS Жыл бұрын
True, but sadly we don't have that upgrade available to us in DCS, despite having hulls that did receive the Seawolf historically.
@aaalanwp Жыл бұрын
do you not have any type 42 destroyers modeled, we had enough of them back then and the seawolf 22's were also about and in commision, I dont think you would have faired quite as well against a 80's carrier group, I dont deny you would have beaten it, but just not as cheaply
@jyralnadreth4442 Жыл бұрын
HMS Andromeda was the only Exocet/Seawolf Leander in 1982 and she is often forgotten about but she was there in the Falklands protecting the Carriers when the HMS Broadsword and Brilliant had to go and help the struggling Type 42s with their Air Defence problems. HMS Penelope did have Seawolf too but was removed in the late 1970s after the trials were completed. Only Andromeda was in service ready for action by 1982 FYI :)
@KortanaDCS Жыл бұрын

@KortanaDCS Жыл бұрын
This is actually something we have noticed on a few of these, but absent a way of getting access to the logs for the damage model, we really haven't come up with a consistently repeatable way of testing it. Subjectively, it definitely feels like there is a split between how damage is modeled on the warbirds and on the jets.

If you do some research you can find it was quite common for pre jet age aircraft to take a large amount of punishment. The pilot, fuel, and engine were the only real way to reliably take them down. It was taught in training movies.
@LondonSteveLee Жыл бұрын
@@paladamashkin8981 Particularly fabric and wood planes like Hurricane where rounds, shrapnel and flak would often pass harmlessly though them. Fuel lines, control cables would be checked and patches glued over the holes and the planes would be back in service in no time. Whereas the metal Spitfire would have huge exit holes and structural damage caused by similar contact. Still robust by modern standards but more vulnerable than traditional designs. "Fabric" planes like Hurricane and Mosquito were obviously very susceptible to fire though!

Sea Dart was good in its day, but struggled with sea skimming missiles. It did shoot down a silkworm, but the silkworm has the RCS of a skyscraper. I talked to several Sea Cat techs in the 80, they all thought it was a real POS. SeaWolf replaced it and was extremely good, but limited range and only an 8 cell launcher. The 80s Royal Navy was pretty weak and whimpy. The RN has done a fabulous job of transforming that 80s fleet crap into a modern formidable fleet
@tomriley5790 Жыл бұрын
I'd actually disagree - 12 T42s 3 Harrier Carriers T22s replacing the leadners the RN was very capable in the 1980s. Now there's only 6 Darings, the T23s are good designs but not all equiped with towed arrays. T26s aren't in service yet and will be good ships but there's only a handful of them being built. The Type 31 and 32 (which I think only exist because Boris messed up a speach) will frankly be embarrassing by modern standards.
@LondonSteveLee Жыл бұрын
Sea Wolf DIDN'T replace Sea Dart they were two different systems for different tasks, Sea Wolf was for point defence. Sea Dart was for area air defence, Mod 1 onwards Sea Dart was a formidable missile for its time. Unfortunately because of previous defence cuts the solid state upgrades to RADAR and Sea Dart hadn't happened by 1982 which cost us dearly. If Type 42 had 1022 RADAR and Mod 1 Sea Dart as it was supposed to have by 1982 - I doubt if the Argentinians would have got anywhere near us. We are making the same mistakes today with penny pinching on the Type 45s.

Awesomely fun looking as always. I love how Cap calls every F-4 bomb run an 'Arclight'. Speaking of Operation Arclight, I believe B-52s are modelled in DCS, am I right? If so how about simulating some REAL Arclight-style runs in a mission? Imagine trying to bomb the Japanese Pearl Harbour fleet with an Arclight raid? I think that might be fun with the boys going up against the Zero-analogs while the AI BUFFS rain down hell. Alternately, I am certain someone has modelled the Yamato and Musashi by now. Arclight runs on the biggest battleships ever made? I know the tactic was futile in WW2, but the technology difference and bomb-load available to the far larger B-52s might make the difference. Would be interesting to see imo!

Leander was more akin to a general purpose frigate, I suspect they are not in game but Type22 frigates and Type 42 air defence destroyers would of been the better choice for air defence. That being said both sea dart and sea wolf were somewhat unreliable in their early days as was highlighted during the falklands conflict. Sandy Woodwards excellent book “one hundred days” gives a really good account of naval / air warfare of the period.

It was used by the Royal Air Force and other allied forces in a variety of roles, including as a bomber, fighter-bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, and anti-shipping aircraft. In the anti-shipping role, the Mosquito was equipped with a 18 inch (450mm) or 22 inch (550mm) torpedo, which it could carry externally underneath the fuselage or wings. The Mosquito's high speed and maneuverability made it an effective platform for attacking enemy ships and submarines."

So I don't know if its in game, but a cool jet to add the 2nd/3rd Gen aircraft would be the A-6 Intruder. It served well into the 90s, because it was an extremely effective aircraft, but it was introduced during and flew in the Vietnam War. The dividing line between 3rd and 4th Gen seems to be Vietnam. 3rd Gen aircraft flew in Vietnam, 4th Gen were built using the lessons learned from Vietnam. Anyway, the A-6 is a much more capable attack aircraft than the A-4 Skyhawk. If it exists in game, it might provide a big boost to how successful the 2nd and 3rd Gen aircraft are. That group seems to pretty consistently do the worst.

These kinds of "what if" battles are some of my favorite GR videos they make. However, it just goes to show everyone the sheer weight of numbers regarding what the developers behind DCS have to contend with. Trying to realistically model almost a century of military hardware --- ground and naval as well as air --- is a fool's errand. And at what point is computer technology going to force DCS world to say, "Oh, look --- it's time for DCS 2!" and then start all over again. There are so many aircraft, so many ground units, so many ships, so many missiles of so many types and for so many mission parameters. So many ground units from main battle tanks to MANPADS to individual platoons of soldiers. So many ships with so many types of radars, so many types of guns, so many types of missiles, so many capabilities from heavily armed and armored WWII battleships to high-tech air defense ships to nuclear powered attack submarines. Are there any Allied WWII carriers? Or even Allied WWII carrier aircraft modeled? I've never seen anyone flying a Wildcat, Hellcat, a Corsair, an Avenger, a Dauntless, a Helldiver, etc. I wish there could be armies of programmers and modelers and military analysts whose full time job it is to make assets for DCS --- and more things for the Grim Reapers to play with.
