DEMS - Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships. They had anything between 3" and 6" guns. Early in the war it was a lot of 4" guns from WW1. By the end of the war they had quick firing dual-purpose 4.7" etc.

Loved the video @Grim Reapers! Can't wait for the next video man! A lot of Merchant Ships that Weren't Designed with Any sort of Defensive Armament would pretty much be armed as DEMS or Defensively Equipped Merchant Ship. Basically, you'd put a 4 inch gun or two on the Bow and Stern of the Ship (1 each) as well as some 20 or 40 millimeter Anti-Aircraft Guns. Some prime examples are Ships like the MV Melbourne Star or the Ocean Ships which Preceeded the Liberty Ships. The Ocean Ships only had 60 Ships Built Between October 1941 to November 1942, at which point Production went straight for the Liberty Ships which were Half a Knot Faster at 11.5 Knots and Better Armed having a Stern 5"/38 Caliber and a Bow 3"/50 Caliber Guns as well as around 8 Single Oerlikon 20 millimeter Anti-Aircraft Guns. Production of Liberty Ships slowly started to phase towards the Newer Victory Ships in July 1943, even though throughout the whole war, a total of 2,710 Liberty Ships would be built in Standard/Cargo, Tanker, Collier, Tank Carrier and Boxed Aircraft Transport Configurations. The Victory Ships were built from 1943/1944 to just after the end of the War (1946) and totalled 534 Ships built. They were a decent amount faster than the Liberty Ships at 15-17 Knots even though they were armed the same as the Liberty Ships. I would love to see the Fighters come in and try a Strafing run on you guys at least just once as well as maybe a Tribal-class Destroyer as an Escort. A lot of the time before and a little ways after American Entry into the war, the Escorting Ships were Probably 1/6 of the Size of the Convoy they were Escorting (I.E. If the Convoy being escorted had about 58 Ships, they'd have no more than about 9 Ships escorting them.) The Only Sloop-of-war that I know off the top of my head is the Black Swan-class and the Modified Design, HMS Amethyst being a Major Example of the Latter.

Having just one escort to deal with combined with the sock sub skillfully keeping the destroyer away from you and the targets the whole time won that round. Cortana was deadly with the deck gun as well.

@Grim_Reapers So the game lets you float submerged at periscope depth without the screws running? The old SSI u-boat simulator "Silent Hunters II" wouldn't. You would start to sink without it being on at the slowest setting (1/2 a Knot.) The stern torpedo tube is your last ditch weapon submerged, and really you should not be using the deck gun unless the target has fallen behind the convoy and you are firing shells to save on torpedoes. I've noticed no CO2 gauge warning of carbon dioxide the longer you are under water; "Silent Hunters II" had one.

CO2 would become an issue after somewhere around 48 hours in basically all the old subsims (AoD, SH series), so not really relevant here unless someone would do a multi-day sortie.

As a former US submariner 87-97 I am very frowny at you all for being on the surface while setting up tracks... looks like you are doing that through the periscope while surfaced! I would suggest periscope depth slow speed at an angle to close the distance while setting up fire control tracks. Do not have the scope up while doing more than a few knots speed at most because of the periscope wake at speed.

Excellent job and nice revenge on the armed merchant that got you. In case you are not aware when surfaces there is a set of binoculars attached to the tower. It gives similar view as periscope but doesn't stick up above the water like a telephone pole. Great team work and congratulations to Sock and crew for keeping the escort occupied. I think he deserves someday socks for that one. I really enjoy these sub videos. Keep up the great work.

Nothing will ever replace DCS because Imma flyboy at heart, but this WolfPack thing is baddd _ass!_ I'd be extremely satisfied with DCS/WolfPack/Carrier Command plus your occasional excursions into IL2 and Arma whenever you can fit em in.

Thanks for putting the reference down here so I can find it. Was going to ask how to do that since you didn't explain what you did on your end exactly :D I love those alternative methods, same goes for good old Dick O'Kane. BTW in such situations like the one where you potshot that one ship astern and the thing did hit, but was too close to go up, I typically would like override the TDC completely and just eyeball it on the scope by basically just setting 0 target speed, ignoring the rest (except for torpedo depth) and manual aiming.

The first merchant ship you torpedoed was a CAM ship (Catapult Aircraft Merchant ship). The catapult is the metal lattice above the bow but the aircraft (usually a Hurricane) was missing. They were an early attempt to give convoys protection against FW 200 Condors and Ju88s that may roam out into the Atlantic. They were relatively successful as an early stop gap. The aircraft would be launched, shoot down the pest, then ditch/bailout near an escort to be picked up. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAM_ship

Cap, you should have used the aft tube to sink the tanker as it turned behind you, and you need to use forward and aft tubes simultaneously while ducking underneath the cargo ships to gain better firing angles.

Very satisfying. However your tactics are sometimes a bit strange.. For example I wonder why you don't range all the targets and keep track where they are. You don't even seem to bother to identify all targets and just eye the biggest one. That Torpedo launch at the stern of the one ship was daring with such a small aspect ratio... I prefer these cooperative videos which are a bit slower in the developement of situation over the more fast paced aerobatics stuff.

Well, old school Dangerous Waters have a little curve, but if you enable the Ai positions, you can do basic operations after 15-30 minutes. Then you can later turn off the Ai, swap in humans and get closer to real nuclear submariner experience and the maths!

So it does have value. All the major banks in the world are looking to get involved with it, especially the Uk. You now have crypto ATMs around the world , you can send and buy with PayPal and send direct to your bank account. In 2015 a certain coin was $313.92 it is now approx.£19800 there is no place you can get this return. Anyhow my point being Capt could take crypto as tips and then convert to fiat currency and bank it, and if he wished he could hold on to it. A lot of geeks watch your stuff Capt, and geeks like crypto it could be a good little earner for you and all. Not for me or anyone else, i have not recommend any exchange or what crypto to invest it, just an idea for this channel to perhaps get more income.
