B-21 is at least as good as the Raptor RCS wise due to the lack of a tail. B-2 uses fly-by-wire tech using a combo of 4 computers, engine thrust, and the ‘elevons’ in place of traditional rudder/ vert stabilizer.

From I've heard B-2 use split flap to provide yaw stability, basically if you're yawing left then you just add drag on the right side with the split flap and then you're back to straight again. It's probably not very efficient due to being drag based control surface, thus fighters still use vertical stabilizers, at least that's my guess.

Minute slats called ruddervators, like spoilers that open and close upon landing they open up either above or below the wings on either side. A millimeter of drag on a finger is enough to make a B2 yaw left or right. I know the skunkworks back in the 60s looked at bleed air systems as stealth modifications to push air via a bleed air/vacuum system via slats on top of the wing like an upside down blown diffuser to control small pitch and yaw movements by creating drag.
@anthonyb5279 Жыл бұрын
Swept wings are somewhat inherently yaw stable. It does none the less have control surfaces that use drag for yaw. Being it is just somewhat yaw stable there is a artificial stability system to help keep it pointed where its supposed be. It is more pitch unstable than yaw the computer has to work harder on pitch stability. If the computer failed it could still fly, just more work to fly. You can try it in X-Plane fail the artificial stability and try and get it on the ground.

the whole and entire point of the the LRASMs is that they can't be see until it's too late. They would be dropped by stealth craft like you did, but they would be dropped at sea level at super dark thirty on a tangential course without support craft. The russians would, in fact, not see them until they were so close that the basic time versus speed equation equals boom boom. There is no way in the world that we would have a cruise missile that cost that much if it didn't do what it was advertised to do. The entire military industrial complex demands it. So, they would not do it from altitude. They would not do it in daylight. They would not attack American radars and the ships (Russians) would all end up under the waves.

At least on the B-2, yaw stability was provided by a modified version of the aileron. Normal ailerons consist of a single flap of metal that angles up or down. On the B-2, the aileron could split; very similar to the airbrake on the F-16. One flap goes up, the other goes down. The goal was to be able to open both flaps to act as an airbrake out on the edge of the wing. That way opening just one airbrake could cause the plane to yaw; hook that up to a computer and we're good to go.
@MiklaDfar Жыл бұрын
I worked on the design of the B-2 flight control system. There are a lot of tweaks in all the control surfaces that keep it stable and controls yaw. Quite a bit of control theory and stabilization went into the design. I assume the B-21 is using much of the system design of the B-2.

Here's an interesting bit of first-hand, I went to college outside of the B2's home in Missouri, they constantly flew over. For a "stealth" aircraft, they are massively loud, possibly the loudest Jet I've ever heard, and when 4 of them were flying off in formation, it was like a constant thunder that doesn't quit. Apparently though, you can't hear them until they've flown overhead, and potentially dropped their bombs. It is something to do with the engine exhaust not opening up downwards if that makes sense. I'm not military or an engineer so words is hard. When they fly low enough I swear you can hear hydraulics or something. They were always a blast to watch. That and the attack choppers doing target lock drills with each other over the golf course I worked at.

Regarding the tail fins, if you think about function, in a fighter you might need more control of yaw to dogfight, point a gun just a tad left or right or do complex maneuvers. If you don't need to do those things, you might be able to generate a stable forward motion without the use of fins. For instance, perhaps the bulgy shape of the aircraft itself is stable enough to carve straight lines.
