I love Bruce in these demonic roles lol. He's perfect. This skit is one of their best!

What I always love about sketch comedy shows like this, compared to the quick turnaround weekly shows like SNL, is the fact the actors look to where it makes sense for the character to be looking, and not always looking somewhere off set at cue cards.
@thetruthexperiment2 жыл бұрын
Macaulay Culkin had to memorize all his lines. And ya know besides that pointless trivia. I could swear they used to do a MUCH better job reading the cards 20 years ago. I mean, now it’s just so obvious it’s distracting but I don’t remember it always being like that. There was a bit more improve and less reliance on exact wording. They had personality. There was danger. Everything is so sterile now. We’ve become puritans. A little responsible drug use never hurt anyone…
@squamish42442 жыл бұрын
@@thetruthexperiment Oh hell I love pointless trivia! SNL is still pretty damn funny and crazy at times. Yes, if you watch old skits (and keep in mind we only...remember...the _good_ old skits), it's a lot more like theatre without the cue-card reading. Apparently they changed their writing process to make it funnier at the expense of 'better' overall skits that weren't quite as funny. Although you do get those gems from the past that were both and have dated well. A perfect example is the Jon Lovitz/Phil Hartman 'Old Hollywood' skit on here where I don't know if they look at the cue cards once. It was a skit they had already written for Phil's audition, so they had lots of time to practice. Everything is bang-on, the humour, the timing, the delivery, the stereotypical accent. 'One More Mission'. Another is 'Brenda the Waitress' with the late great Jan Hooks and Alec Baldwin. It isn't really a 'joke' skit, it's just two characters acting funny really well. The last 15 years of Jan Hooks' life were kind of sad, she spent all her time boozing in a farmhouse in Upstate New York and died young, but never lost her sense of humour.

@@squamish4244 "We only remember the _good_ old skits"--something people so often forget. I'm going to be the devil's advocate on the cue cards matter and say that Christopher Walken was always hilarious while obviously reading from cue cards. (Though I do normally prefer when the performer can hide it better that they are reading.)
@squamish4244 Жыл бұрын
@@zoyadulzura7490 Christopher Walken was one of those actors who was so funny he could get away with it. Alec Baldwin, a 30-year veteran of SNL, can check cue cards in a way so subtle that you can have a hard time catching it unless you are actually looking for it.

There are many layers of joke going on here. But one that I noticed is similar to jazz. They always say, "It's not the notes I'm playing It's the notes I'm NOT playing". You get that here with the joke that is NOT made. This entire sketch they never make any pun or joke based on SOUL and SOLE (of a shoe). It's like negative space in visual art but instead with a comedy sketch.
@gaberobinson9 жыл бұрын
Definitely you can compare comedy to music and other art forms. There is no filler in their sketches, and you see more of them with each viewing. That is kind of like how the Beatles would often leave a lyric unrhymed instead of using a trite rhyme.
