I understand people feel that you can't battle two polar opposite groups. This video is more so a comparison and who I personally think did better with the song. Everyone has their own personal style and taste, so everyone's decision on this is an opinion...INCLUDING MINE. Remember that! :) I'm reacting to this from a musical knowledge perspective and not a "who do I like more" perspective. They both are phenomenal renditions! Did I have a favorite out of the two? Yes, but that's a result of the musical knowledge and what I was looking for going into the two videos. Let's just enjoy the beauty of music! :)

You knew you'd be opening up a can of worms here, right? I'm a VoicePlay fan so I'm going to be biased. That said, I appreciate the quality of PTX's cover, it was nicely executed. I really enjoyed VoicePlay's rendition because of the reason I'm their fan: they breathe new life into these kind of pieces, instead of just singing in multi-part harmony. So, of course, if there were a vote, I'm in Camp VoicePlay.

I agree completely! When PTX version came out I loved it and played it all The way up to Christmas! I have always looked forward to PTX’s Christmas songs. And then when VP came out with their version I absolutely loved it too! I agree with you on the bass because I’m a really huge fan of the original version of this song and that’s what I was missing from PTX’s version. Once again nothing against Matt! I really love his voice, he’s super talented. But I was wanting some thing a little bit more bass-y and I feel like Geoff delivered that better in the song.

It seems that the majority of people on this thread that like PTX are very dismissive and at times, downright nasty about VP and some don't even really know anything about VP by their own admission and just talk them down while sitting on their pedestal gushing about PTXs accomplishments like they are their own. On the flip side, I noticed most of the people that enjoyed VP more also commented on how talented PTX was and didn't deride them, just stated that they preferred VP. Why does it have to be this way? Why do people have to tear down others who have worked extremely hard to develop their craft and put a lot of time and effort into everything they do just because it isn't their cup of tea? By all means prefer one group over the other but there is no reason to tear one group apart in order to try and make the other look better or make yourself feel better as a fan.

It is personal preference, Obviously Pentatonix and Voiceplay aren't in the same stratosphere as far as record sales but no one is wrong as far as who they like.
@samuelmncedisi10652 жыл бұрын
Personally, I prefer Voiceplay's rendition. Pentatonix are awesome, they have amazing arrangements - especially this one with the key changes and transitions, they know who are they are and because they know who they are, they always confine themselves within that box. Voiceplay on the other hand are versatile like octopuses, they have the capacity to weave through various genres - much like jazz fusion - while still being anchored in their own identity, they think outside the box, not to mention they're always showcasing and collaborating with other musicians.
@billsturm92252 жыл бұрын
I will have to give this one to Voiceplay. While I have been a Pentaholic for a very long time, this song is meant to be performed as opposed to sung. VP performed it, PTX sang it.
@candilunsford28782 жыл бұрын
I think that all the "big" a cappella groups--VoicePlay, Pentatonix, Home Free, Voctave--are all insanely talented. For me it comes down to arrangements and I feel Geoff and Layne just have that magic touch. I love how they do their own. Each has it's own distinct sound and song preferences and I usually just put my music on shuffle when I'm at work because they're all good. If you like Geoff's higher register try his solo Blackbird or High and Dry to get all 5 octaves. His belts in Oogie Boogie, Little Mermaid and Queen in 5 Minutes just makes my day. LOL
@b.buster.2 жыл бұрын
I also have to add that Voiceplay arrangements by Layne and Geoff are a bit more complicated than PTX since they have to account for so many different people coming in and out of the group whereas PTX has changed one guy, Avi, in their history. Voiceplay mainstays have been Geoff, Eli and Layne from day one.
@marykuettner7522 жыл бұрын
@@b.buster. That isn't really true. Accounting for different voices is a tiny part of arranging. Arrangements can be simple or complex depending on many factors. For example Pentatonix does a extremely complex arrangement of the Twelve Days of Christmas because each member's part is different in every verse. So five members all have twelve different parts to sing. Different voices to arrange for is the smallest part of arranging.
@randiskye44442 жыл бұрын
@@b.buster. Just a minor technical point: Eli, though a longtime member, is not an original member. Mykal Kilgore, Scott Porter, Earl Elkins, Jr., Layne Stein, & Geoff Castellucci make up the founding members in 1997, when they were called 4:2:Five. Eli joined years later in 2010. (Their video "Just Sing" has captions that show their history of members and collaborative connections, it's a very good listen!) I agree that the arrangement of a capella is wholly dependent on knowing the abilities of your instruments (the singers). Geoff has stated in his video about how he arranges that you have to remember to arrange for the voices you have, not the ones you wish you had. He went on to say that he tries to bring something new to the piece while still honoring the original artist's work. The artistic choices he and Layne (and Eli on "Eleanor Rigby") make are what we VP fans appreciate. They are both 'out of the box' thinkers, creatively speaking, and all members and special guest singers they've used have been awesome collaborators.

Awww…come on. I like both for different reasons. VoicePlay has the theatrics with an actual Mr. Grinch, plus Geoff’s low bass. @Huldra Draco A battle doesn’t always have to mean “who did it better” or “who got beat” lol. I’m simply comparing and choosing off of personal preference and musical elements. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference because we all have different tastes. I agree with Tim’s comment too! :)

Geoff counts among his bass influences the old Disney bass singer Thurl Ravenscroft, who sang the original _You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch_ for the cartoon (and who also voice-acted Tony the Tiger -- "They're grrreat!"). Geoff is really able to capture Thurl's rounded tones and colorful phrasing, and has featured that in many of his performances, such as here with Grinch, and for example with his Headless Horseman video (another one sung by Thurl back in the day).

Especially with this song I enjoy that very much (it's more like a mini movie). You can always see how much fun they have singing and filming together. PTX is always a little to "clean" or "perfect" for me. That's why VP will probably always "win", I can't really get into PTX although I do see and hear how good they are. In my opinion you can't really compare them as they're in different markets, if that makes sense. PTX is at a level where their "competition" is the mainstream/non acapella artists, which means there are certain expectations of them from both the public and their label. This is why we don't see them in costumes all that often (some of the few exceptions would be earlier stuff like Love Again and Papaoutai). That was part of the reason Mitch and Scott created Superfruit in the past - there they didn't have the same limitations. But I agree with what others have said - there isn't the same competition between acapella groups as there are in other parts of the music industry. Which is why there are several crossovers - either one member joins a different group like Avi with Home Free or both groups join forces like PTX and Voctave for Once Upon a December.

(Or other people they are performing with). It all seems rather cold and sterile. VoicePlay, on the other hand, handle all of their production themselves. So their creativity and love of performing with each other is always up front. By having fun with each other, they allow the viewers to join in on that fun. All without sacrificing the quality of their vocals, which keep getting better all the time. I won’t say which one is “better”, but I know which one I enjoy seeing.

But I always felt PTX as empty of swag and warmth, it's like they just can't connect with each other when they sing. It's over produced and comercially pasteurized. They feel, to me, like those beautiful shop windows that you look once and thinks it's pretty. You look twice and get bored. With VP, on the other hand, you can feel their affection for each other. Even the new members and the featured artists are so connected with the group during the songs. To me, personally, the craft and thought that Geoff, Layne, and sometimes Eli put on the arrangements are just so creative and talented. They are always surprising me! To me, they are the kind of complete artists that I wanna support, follow and listen on repeat. Also, in this day and age, seems really silly - to me - to base aesthetic apreciation of any artist on number of likes and views counting. Interesting statements. Whether it's sports teams, foods, rappers, rock groups, R&B singers, country music etc. we all have preferences. I kinda put it to some enjoy getting dressed up, I'd rather have a job can wear blue jeans all the time. Same with vehicles (SUVs, Pickup Trucks & sedans) even the colors of vehicles (corvettes can only be red or black). Pentatonix aren't slouches. Pentatonix assembled intentionally for the Sing-Off. Kirstin Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, and Scott Hoying were childhood to high school friends. They had sung as a trio & had gone off to various colleges. One was in another vocal ensemble. He found out from someone about the auditions for The Sing-0ff. He contacted them to get back together. It was strongly recommended to get a bass & beatboxer. They recruited Avi Kaplan & Kevin Olusola. Literally built the sound & arrangements days before the audition. They were selected & went on to win that year's Sing-Off. After that win, they kept together to build a brand/unique sound. Not only were they very focused developing their sound but mastered social media becoming extremely popular as an a capella group. Avi helped to lock in the bass along with the beat boxer Kevin Olusola who's very talented. They have a unique sound apart from VoicePlay & Home Free. The Sing-Off helped these & other a capella groups garner fans & broaden popularity for these a capella groups. In fact, besides the competition, they went on tour together spending months together. They learned from each other a lot of networking, using social media & arranging. I'm not stating no one knew how to do anything, they got exposed to each other & ideas. Geoff has arranged for Home Free & members have worked with each other. Peter Hollens is another collaborator as is Voctave. Avi's featured in another version of Home Free's winning song 'Ring of Fire'. Geoff arranged 'Elvira' for Home Free to do with Oak Ridge Brothers. In my mind, I see no competition between the groups, I see them hustling to get recognition & attention to generate audiences & do what they love, music. Being real, all these groups do versions of songs written & performed by others. Those artists were gracious to allow their songs to be used (royalties & written permission). No one (I know of) has gotten upset over their use & arrangements. So they shouldn't be upset with others doing versions of the song too. How many versions of The Star Spangled Banner is sung? Silent Night? Unlike Pentatonix, these 2 groups weren't overnight sensations & there were times they were ready to walk away but they stuck to it. Both Home Free & VoicePlay started out in high school. Which is over 15-20 years ago. Geoff, Earl, Scott & Layne; Adam & Chris were the remaining founders (then respectively Scott & Chris left). Over the years members had chosen to leave (family, work & changes in career direction etc.). VoicePlay (based out of Orlando FL) toured too & gained experience too. They also had Disney & Universal in their 'hood' gaining theatrical experience/presentation. As mentioned, one of its founding members was Scott Porter. He was the original beat boxer of the group. It's heard in the "Halo" tribute. When Layne & Scott do 'red team/blue team' section, that's him & Layne doing 'sounds'. Fact when Scott left, Layne had to learn to cover his spot beat boxing. Scott trained him. [Scott's main focus now is acting. He was in Friday Night Lights, The Good Wife, Hart of Dixie, Scorpion & Lucifer along with movies, episodic TV (Law & Order among others) & ironically has done voiceovers for multiple video games. He's sung with them on occasion over past few years, that song was a tribute & was one of them.] Home Free based out of Minnesota did singing part-time weekend gigs or so many months away. When they did travel, gained experience/knowledge using their voices. When chose to go fulltime is when Tim Foust & Austin Brown joined up permanently. Let's not get it wrong, there's 'attitudes' & 'drama' between any groups. It's a marriage/partnership. Sure, not every personality gets along with others, happens in all music arenas (backup singers, lead singers, people on Broadway, musicians etc.). People can choose favorites & even like a song version over the original. It doesn't mean it's sacrilege to do another version. Whitney did a version of Dolly Parton's song she recorded & wrote 'I Will Always Love You'. Parton didn't get upset; she was quite overjoyed. She had written that song decades earlier & it now was a cash cow for her (getting writing royalties) for the way Whitney sang it & made that more popular than her version. My dream? Avi, Geoff & Tim do at least couple of songs together, that would be a dream team for me. Interesting to see & hear the results.

Personally, I liked VoicePlay's arrangement better; I felt like they did a better job of trading parts around, keeping things moving, and having more going on at once. Though I admit that the PTX arrangement does have a couple of points in its favor as well, especially in the second half. In any case, you can also do a battle between the same two groups over Attention, which they both covered. It's a little more fair, because Attention is a pop song, rather than a movie song, taking away a significant advantage VP had here with their theatrical background and fantastic make-up artist and such. (Although, they feature Rachel Potter in their version, which is almost like cheating.)

I love Voiceplay, it was better to me. They are just so fun to watch. Pentatonix is okay, Matt definitely has the classic singing style like the original song which was nice. I fell away from PTX after Avi left, but some of their songs with Matt I do like.

Voctave also does a version of Mr. Grinch. I vote another version to see what the best bits were. All vocal groups are so different and amazing in their own ways. And loved for different reasons because the listener is just as unique in what speaks to them. If we all had to be honest and could only select one vocal group to listen to from now on, we would be able to say which one and why. We shouldn’t be forced to constantly monitor ourselves for fear we might upset someone else by having an opinion. I am definitely glad I don’t have to choose just one. I am going to listen and enjoy what they have to offer.

I'm a Pentaholic - and a recent introductee to Voiceplay. Argh. BOTH are extraordinary, but VP is just more ... "interesting" than Pentatonix. PTX doesn't even have an edge with the vocals because VP is equally perfect. Or PTX is equally perfect. Whichever. Sorry - there is no "better."

Everyone has their preferences for sure, but honestly how can you compare the two? That's like asking- is theater better than pop music? How about both? I've always seen PTX as more pop... Voiceplay is more theater, and Home Free is more country. I love all 3. Which version I'd enjoy the most depends on the day and if I'm in the mood to laugh and have an experience or if I'm in the mood to jam... and what to.

I think if I was just listening to the song (like in the car) I would prefer PTX. It’s a pretty straightforward rendition of the song. If I was watching a video I’d prefer VoicePlay because they performed a complete skit from the story and you would lose so much just listening to it.

If I’m just listening to the song, PTX wins hands down. The arrangement is jazzy and dynamic and just makes for really good, catchy listening. If I’m watching a performance, then it’s Voiceplay. There’s a lot in the Voiceplay performance that needs the visual to make sense, which makes it difficult to just listen to it and understand what’s going on. They always put on such a great show, and this video is hilarious. One question I have, for anybody who has seen Voiceplay perform live, does Geoff do those subharmonics live on stage? If you watch his bass singing tutorials, it seems like there’s a lot of air that needs to be processed out of them to make them sound as full as they do in studio recordings. I know PTX makes a point of not putting out tracks that they can’t perform live (which might limit Matt’s low end), and I wondered if Voiceplay operates similarly.
@maeco72 жыл бұрын
Yep, Geoff sings them live. There are a few videos floating around KZbin where he uses them.
@DethWulf2 жыл бұрын
I liked both versions of these (mostly), but for me, Voiceplay's arrangement felt a little...unfocused? Too all over the place? Like, it felt like it kept killing the momentum of the song to try and insert funny asides, or to switch to a different singer, and as a result it felt a little too try-hard or hokey to me. There are songs and arrangements where that kind of thing works, but I think in this case, it was a bit of a disservice to the song. I know some people seem to complain about Pentatonix and how they arrange, but they always struck me as arranging with a focus on the song as opposed to any one member - yes, Scott sings lead a lot, but he also has a very pop-sounding vocal that's very versatile, so it usually fits. Voiceplay, from what little I've heard of them, seem to arrange so that everyone gets a little time to shine; not that PTX doesn't do the same, but it's more overt with VP. I like some of what they do, but in this case it felt like it was trying to do too many things, and thus didn't dedicate enough time to any of them. I'd have to go with PTX in this case.
@lkayh2 жыл бұрын
I missed this-probably because I always resist the idea of this group VS that. Usually I love both for different reasons. I think I agree with you on most points. To me the arrangement is a tossup because they were trying for completely different things. Voiceplay’s felt a little choppy, but then they were intermixing straight vocals with their theater, which I loved. And as another commenter said, Geoff’s been using that gorgeous bass about a decade longer than Matt, so we’ll see where Matt is 10 years hence. (I think one reason a lot of folks love Geoff’s singing is his “chill” vibe-he has plenty of energy, but it never feels tense or nervous.)

I wouldn't put the VP version of this song on a playlist as I don't think it works well without the video...too many vocal flip flops that I found distracting. I will agree that VoicePlay wins this one, but will also acknowledge that PTX’s version is amazing as a feature for Matt. I've puzzled over the appeal of PTX for a long time, getting nowhere. Today it hit me that there is a crucial difference that may explain the passion on both sides. PTX perfectly embodies the rules. Their sound is traditional at the highest possible level. From my perspective, that makes them boring - but I'm guessing that from the opposite perspective, it makes them reassuring and exactly "perfect." On the other side, VP is - to me - pure ear candy. They break the rules constantly, and that makes them (to me) lively and engaging. Because those choices ALSO happen to sound really good while being surprising - I'm infatuated. Not much fond of tradition. It bores me. So of course I love VP.... never bored. Ever.
@creativecrewfam2 жыл бұрын
This is suchhhh a good comment because of the way you explained it, YES! I love both groups and nothing wrong with either. PTX is more of the classic modern acapella sound whereas VP is more fun and playful, but BOTH very talented in their respective approaches. :)

Thank you for putting that so beautifully, that's exactly how I feel about these groups, but haven't been able to think of how to explain it.

@@creativecrewfam EXACTLY. And when artists have different goals, they need to be held to different standards. If VP solidified into its own predictable, "always follows these patterns" routine, they'd have stepped off the art track, and it would be a loss. I don't see them doing that any time soon. They have tropes (they frequently use words instead of ahhhh, or ohhhh; that is one of their standards) but even there, they mix it up. In Geoff's latest drop, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" I don't believe he sings the chorus the same even twice. Instead, his Geoff-tet does something different that has me on alert, waiting for it to happen again - but next time it's mutated into something else equally gorgeous. No relaxing allowed. Edge of seat w/ delight all of the way. For those who want to relax into a known space and be soothed by something beautiful they've heard many times before, perhaps that's irritating. What's important is to recognize that neither is better or worse. They are top flight musicians with very different goals. No surprise that the art crowd loves VP. And also no surprise that PTX has the numbers.
