She's really charming. There was one thing I didn't understand, the ritual doesn't follow a certain age, it follows the death of their grandma? What if the grandmother dies early or lives a very long life? Also, did I misunderstand or did one of the sisters already have a husband?

Rama Mohamed i think it’s all circumstantial, on a person-to-person case. Her mother said she had her teeth filed down before she got married, and I think now the teeth filing is happening because an opening to take up family responsibilities has come up in the wake of her grandmother’s death.

In general, people in Bali will carry out this ceremony after their youngest child reaches adulthood. So they can do it with all their children. Also Mesangih is carried out in conjunction with other ceremonies like Ngaben (cremation ceremony) or pawiwahan (wedding), and it’s carried out on certain days only.

It's all diet. Americans eat a lot of soft foods which makes our teeth less strong so that's why so many children get braces. But when you think about it, our ancestors had fairly straight teeth even though they were less civilized, and that's because their diets consisted of better food.

I'm always amazed learning the traditions of every culture. I may not understand their traditions any more than others find my people's traditions odd. Being if the Cherokee people we honor long standing traditions, ceremonies that have been passed through the generations. So much of our culture was victim to the attempt to destroy by the Europeans coming to America but we held strong to our culture and today I'm so proud to be a part to passing along our traditions to my children. I feel culture, traditions should be held strong, not allow others that don't agree or understand stomp then out. As long as those traditions cause nobody harm or a forced thing such as child marriage, forced marraige and circumcision, none should judge another's belief. This world is big enough to allow that freedom every person to live their life, their cultural traditions as they see fit. One shouldn't be forced to live another way just to please the other. Respect, freedom and choice should be for every person

we're an archipelago, so every island has its own traditions. Bali happens to be a predomanently hindu island so the culture is hindu. We had a really big buddhist influence BAAAACk in the day so in places like Jogjakarta where the biggest monarchy was centered all those centuries ago, theres a lot of buddhist culture and religion influence. But since the big uprise of islam, and the adoption of it being our "national religion" or wthvr, most places has a very predominantly strict muslim culture. we're just a melting pot of culture religion and traditions, its like being in 6 countries at once

Tbh if you eat meat you've probably indirectly caused the death of thousands of animals (not just the ones you eat) without realising. Most Male chicks get killed after birth in a grinder because they have little use in the meat and farming industry.

Yup! This ceremony is traditionally the last "big ceremony" someone can have before their wedding. That's why her mom said this was the last thing she, as a parent, can do for her child.

I have a problem with the title, as a Balinese this ritual is only held in Bali related to Hinduism. Indonesia has a wide range of traditions and Balinese tradition is one of the most unique in Indonesia if not the Asia or even the world.

I know! Poor guy. His fate is INFINITELY less cruel than what the chickens in our US factory farms suffer through. At least he got to be outside in the fresh air. #govegan #mayallbeingsbefreefromsuffering
