I think the line between preference and prejudice falls on how you go about conducting yourself with people of certain races you aren’t particularly attracted to. If you are respectful and say you aren’t interested to someone who you aren’t attracted to, I don’t think that is being prejudice. If you are adamant about making these people feel bad about themselves because they messaged you, that is prejudiced. You shouldn’t have to talk to someone that you’re not attracted to. I don’t talk to women on dating apps, it doesn’t mean I hate women. You can’t control the feeling of attraction therefore I don’t think it can be considered prejudice. If you are intentionally disrespectful to people outside of the races you find yourself liking, that is prejudice.
@countgreg955 жыл бұрын
exactly
@KaiDecadence5 жыл бұрын
This is pretty much the golden answer. It's all about how you reject the person. A simple "Sorry, I'm not interested" suffices instead of going into specifics but if the person is one of "those" people who will keep heckling you until you answer, well they put themselves in that spot to hear the blunt truth. Because at the end of the day, one can still treat those they aren't physically attracted to as fellow people of society. I mean, I'm not attracted to fat people but that doesn't mean I wouldn't be friends with a fat person. It's pretty much the same deal. You have to find the right match for you, that's really all dating comes down to and I'd much rather be with someone who wants to be with me over someone who's just dating me to be Politically correct.

LikedMyOwnComment True, indeed. However, I think it goes deeper when you have groups of people going through similar experiences. It brings attention to a deeper problem. @@brentduanefoster Boy, did you say truth! I'm glad someone spoke out about how our attractions are created by us, based on our "imagos", the set of messages, experiences, and behaviors that we all saw our parents, relatives, and communities engage in as children. That imago informs who we are attracted to. We are also conditioned by media to aspire to attract who will make us look gobouod in society. Most of us don't want to take a look at that imago for fear of; uncomfortable realities about how race, color, and social class inform who we are attracted to. As "part of the conversation'", we need to talk openly about why we have the attractions that we do and how those attractions limit or define us.

Mr. LA Tours I wholeheartedly agree. Failure to do so will only set us on the same path of other social groups. It’s ironic that so many within the LGBTQ will declare to the heterosexual community, “We’re just like you.” To that I say, “Yes, we are, and in many ways, that’s NOT a good thing.”

I do believe that there are preferences that are created by social norms, depending on where one grew up etc. But I also know that it doesn't necessarily control who you fall in love with. You may firmly believe that you have a strong, specific preference, and then fall flat on your face for someone completely different.

The whole point of dating is EXCLUDING people and picking what you find the most suitable person according to your PREFERENCE. There are attractive people in every ethnic or racial group, but some people just prefer a certain race, THAT'S NOT RACIST. Just don't be an asshole about it.
@brentduanefoster5 жыл бұрын
Christian The thing about preference is that it is birthed from our social conditioning and experiences. Education, or MISeducation about people, places and things. Here’s the thing. What is programmed can be reprogrammed. Some people just choose to remain where they are in consciousness, because it’s somewhat comfortable.
@TheFeltonLover5 жыл бұрын
exactly. dating is the only time when it’s 100% okay to exclude people. you don’t owe anyone access to your body/romance. everybody isn’t attracted to everything and that’s fine. this demand that everyone’s dating desires be inclusive of everyone otherwise you’re a bad person is ridiculous. i don’t like short men or men who do drugs. am i shortphobic for that? am i drugs-phobic for that? people need to grow the hell up.

I think I might have a prejudice against all other races because I feel like I won't "get" them on a cultural level and they won't "get" me. Er no. Dating is absolutely exclusionary in nature, you go for what you find attractive and vice versa with the partner. What people need to realize (but they don't) is that some people are attracted to certain things and race absolutely plays a part in it too. For example, some guys aren't attracted to Asians because they tend to be shorter or they're not attracted to their facial features (and don't give me that "not all asians have certain facial features like slanted eyes" because unless the Asian is mixed, they will have it). Or for Blacks, some aren't attracted to dark skin as it does nothing for them and they prefer paler/fairer skin color. I mean I'll be real here, I don't have racial preferences but I do tend to slide towards non-black guys because a lot of black guys who try getting at me are ghetto/street and I find that to be an absolute turn off (and this goes for any race ("wiggers"), I'm just not attracted to that type of mentality) but also because I have not a whole lot in common with the average black guy who does get at me. I'm also not attracted to fat, overweight, or obese men neither and it's not because "the media tells me it's bad", I just don't find it physically stimulating and I felt this way even before I knew what gay was but I was attracted to the same sex when I was a kid. And finally, I just find it hilarious how all this expectation falls on white people but it's totally okay for a Black man to only date Black men or Asian men to only date other Asian men. Either all of it's wrong or none of it is, you don't pick and choose what's convenient for you/your agenda. Because what the white guy said in the video about when he dated his Chinese ex also plays a part in dating. Familiarity. Some people just prefer to be in a relationship with those they can relate with. It's really no different when an Asian man prefers to date another Asian man because of shared experiences and/or background. White guys can be in the same type of sphere and it doesn't make them racist for it so long as they still treat the minority as a person in daily interactive life. The main reason I feel this way is because it's very obvious why this topic is still going on today and that is because a bunch of minority men get pissed when they get turned down by a white guy and you know it's because deep down, they prefer white men. How many gay Asian men do you see chasing after Black gay men? Or Black gay men chasing after Asian men. The latter is probably more common but the point I'm trying to make here is that it all comes down to them preferring White guys but when these White guys prefer other White guys, it's seen as a problem yet the minority in question is no better because he's mostly chasing after a certain kind of man themselves. Let's not beat around the bush here because if there were just as many Black or Asian men chasing each other, this wouldn't even be a thing of discussion or at the very least, not as prevalent as it is today. TL;DR: Just let people date who they want to date. So long as they aren't saying thingsl ike "I don't date niggers, chinks, japs, etc" and still are open to talk or have a conversation outside of the meat market of Grindr (which is a hookup app, not a "dating" app), there really is no issue. Now if we are talking about a gay club and a minority tries to strike up a non-sexual conversation with a white group and they just get scoffed away, THAT I can totally get behind and call out but if it's just dating/hookup then yeah... The only dating problem as far as minorities I can side with are the people who push their porn fantasies on people who don't fit the criteria and don't want to ("Blacks are all dom thug tops", "Asians are all subby bottoms"). I can totally understand the frustration there because even when you make it know that they don't fit these stereotypes, some people still try to push it on you and it's just annoying so for that, all I can say is keep that stuff to yourself unless you know for a fact the guy is okay being put in that porn stereotype. But anyway, that's just my 2 cents.

I'm at that point where I understand some people know what they prefer (even if those preferences are controversial) and no matter what other people say, they aren't going to change their mind. I just have to hope that I meet people who are more open-minded than that. I'd rather see someone as more than just their face value appearance because we're all humans who have more layers than just fat, femme, asian, skinny, tall etc. If you don't like me for any particular reason, then I'll just have to move on to the next dude.

Whether people realize it or not, their "preferences" are rooted in prejudice, racism, or self-hatred. If all of the images of beautiful people you've been fed are all tall, pale, light eyed, have light straight hair, and muscular, you will begin to internalize these images and view these qualities to be desirable. Simultaneously, if every images of a person of color was the down-trotten (black/latin) or the comedic relief (asian) in media, you begin to associate this with being undesirable and begin to distance yourself from seeking out people of these races. The preference is the internalized bias that they've subconsciously succumbed to. This includes the white guy who prefers whites or the black guy who only dates whites. You mean to tell me that they can't find ONE PERSON in the ENTIRE RACE that they find attractive?!?! When they try to justify their preference, it only highlights their bias and how oblivious they are to it even more.

That is such a cop out, cookie cutter answer though because sometimes, it does come down to genuinely liking something. I mean fine. As an American myself, if what you said is true then why do I think Asian men are just so very attractive? When it comes to other black guys, it's a case by case thing for me because a lot of the ones in my area who've tried getting at me were hood/street and it is the biggest turn off to me and while I know there are black guys who don't fit that mentality, they're rare in my area and most are straight a lot of the time but I digress. I just don't think it always comes down to self-hatred, racism, or prejudice. My non-attraction to a lot of black guys is not because I hate myself for the race I am because I've seen a good many black men I find attractive but at the end of the day, If I had to choose between a handsome black guy or handsome Asian guy who both had equally good personalities, I'd go for the Asian guy lol Some people are just attracted to certain things and it's not wrong because the important thing that matters is that even if you aren't attracted to a certain someone, it doesn't mean you can't treat them like a fellow human of society in terms of daily, non-sexual interaction.

@@KaiDecadence The fact of the matter is that in your mind, you've established a hierarchy of desirability. This is highlighted by the fact that your decision between two equally desirable candidates will still ultimately be based on race, as well as by your admission of fetishizing of all Asian men but choosing to take Black suitors on a case by case basis. That's problematic and superficial. Not all people that happen to live in areas that you describe have a "hood" mentality. Are there not "hood/street" white men? Isn't there a whole set of Asian gang members in LA? If you met one of them, it sounds like you'd still be into them simply because of their race which proves my point. If you are shutting out an entire group of men based on your sweeping generalization of how you've perceived them all to be, that preference is rooted in prejudice.

@@KaiDecadence Man your answer just proves how racist an d anti-Black you are ? You don't like Blacks in your area because they're "hood" ok but you would date hood Asians though... and would not date non hood Black men... Racist GTFOH

Loved the discussion and honesty dears. I suggest that everyone get off Grindr , - try reality for a while and learn how to flirt dears much healthier in the long run. It truly builds character

Grindr is a HOOKUP app. It's not meant to find a relationship. It can definitely happen sure but it's not what the app was intended for. I don't disagree that it's probably better to try to learn how to flirt/show interest in person but at the same time, it's kinda dangerous if you're not in a Gay setting. But I digress, Grindr is what you make of it, it's not some evil sentient program that's out to mind control people or something like that lol.
