LEICA have released 2 new 35mm Summilux M lenses in October 2022. The new Classic Summilux (steel rim) and the new FLE 2 Summilux.
The Classic is designed from the 1960's version the FLE 2 from the previous FLE version released around 2010. In this video, I take out one of the original Classic versions 1968 (on my M10-R) and an FLE 2012 version (on my M11) to compare the shots during an outing around Sydney Harbour, Australia. My comparison might be a hint to what to expect from the new lenses.

It is absolutely impressive to see what and how much progress photography has made in the last 50 years. Very interesting comparison that, in my opinion, has no history: photography is not only out of focus, ghost and its surroundings, there is a documentary photography that requires precision, sharpness, high micro-contrast, accurate / captivating colors. I then choose the 35 / 1.4 FLE; if I really need a dreamy atmosphere, I will put a soft filter in front of the lens. Nice video, thanks and greetings from Italy

I ordered the FLE2 since I already own the pre-ASPH Summilux that offers a soft look at wide open.

Thank your for all of your videos. Which camera do you like more after a long time… m10r or m11?

I like the looks of the M10R my black paint version. The M11 is the work horse now, offering the greatest flexibility of use, Technolgoy and in camera backup. The M10R tends to get used with my vintage or classic lenses

@@Adventure8 I agree. Do you also see difference in image quality? I find m11 files to be easier to edit in different ways as you can push them more in any side.

Thanks for the image examples to see how both lenses render. I recently purchased a Leica M4 and was debating which 35mm to get. Was wondering about how the classic summilux would be on digital, as I have a M-10P body. I am leaning towards the classic that has a unique look when wide open and stopped down it can be more like the other. 😊 Then someone advised to look at the Summicron ver 4- that may be more consistent. 😂 choices! My other prime is a 50mm Summilux - so looking for a 35mm prime for digital and film. 🤔

A very different feel from these two lenses, I prefer the softer Summilux Classic look personally. Thank you for the comparisons, I just bought the discontinued Voigtlander Helier which offers a similar look as the Classic Summilux and if stopped down, it will look like the newer FLE. :)

Where can I get the camera strap you have on your M11 ? I love it.

The black leather strap (green ends) came with another used Leica camera. So unfortunately I don't know the original manufacturer. No other branding on the strap..

I have both these lenses and I generally grab the classic v2. I think it’s because I shoot an m246 and the lower contrast of the lens gives a richer midtone. Hard to describe but the FLE pushes the blacks and whites pretty far apart on the histogram. Haven’t ever done a direct side by side though

I prefer newer design and classic is like for a special occasion or mood. I've been thru this already many times. The feeling towards too much artistic look wears off eventually and you want something more 'normal'. So it's better to have veriety in your choice )))

I have a 35mm FLE for my MP but I'm very tempted to get the reissue steel rim summilux. Not sure if it would be worth the jump, any thoughts?

I have both the 35mm FLE and the old classic (equivalent) to the steel rim 35m f1.4. Both lens are very different wide open. If I want a sharp image at f1.4, I go for the FLE. If I want artistic flare, soft focus moving away from the centre, the Steel Rim classic is the answer. The FLE gets used more often by myself. Have both is the simple answer. Let me know what you decide.

Have you tried the 35/1.4 fle on a Leica SL? I did some tests with a SL2-S and the result was particularly disappointing

I strongly suspect you have some focusing issues with manual focusing as I too have the 35mm Summilux classic (1960s) but get significantly sharper images with it, even with my film bodies (e.g. the original M6). Granted it is relatively soft wide open at f/1.4 but it definitely can get sharper images at f/1.4 than what I see here. Or it could be a camera shake issue, in which case using a tripod would definitely help. Being honest with my self (and facing the realities of aging) I at some point recognized that I really needed to start using auto-focus lenses - at which point I started getting properly focused images at least 95% of the time (vs 80 - 85% on average). Makes a big difference in terms of number of 'keepers'.
@Adventure8

True, manual focus is a challenge sometimes. Nevertheless, my manual focus accuracy for both lenses is about the same. The main point of the test was to show the main differences when wide open. Thanks for watching and commenting.

“All roads lead to Rome” is a saying. In photography, do “all photographers eventually go to Leica”? Just a thought.
