Definitely a neat idea but I would never give up my 300/1000 diamond plate, 8000 and 12000 grit water stones and Lie-Nielsen honing guide for a grinder, dry sand paper and wooden jigs. Takes a little longer especially if the blade is in rough shape but the 300 grit diamond plate makes quick work of removing deep defects and is great for keeping the water stones flat. At the end of the process you have an edge that is scary sharp and no risk of overheating the edge on a bench grinder, which I cringed at watching.

Уважаемый. Купите алмазный диск на наждак. Убирать заусенец после него можно сразу 2500 или пастой. Качество гораздо выше спаленого наждаком в данном видео. И дабы не палить есть наждаки с водичкой и прочими наворотами. Гугл в помощь.

That’s an interesting video. I have been a (serious) hobby woodworker for over 45 years and so have seen a lot of changes in every sphere including sharpening. Starting with oil stones; then water stones; then sharpening film (scary sharp). I’ve got several sharpening jigs such as the Veritas mark 2. My favoured option is film using the Veritas mark 2. Why? It’s cleaner than Waterstones (no moisture) and I can keep the glass (on which the films are mounted) right behind me. So, it’s clean and convenient = I touch up the blades more often. The big weakness is the jig. Getting the blade square and keeping it square through the sharpening. Seeing as how I use only a few angles - mainly 25 degrees (chisels): 30 degrees (normal planes); 43 and 50 degrees ( low angle) - I could easily make the angles platform for each. My one worry is the sled upon which you have put the paper. I was always taught that the flatness of the sled (or stone or glass) across its width was critical - which sounds very logical. Would your use of wood as the sled, albeit scraped, result in a sled surface sufficiently flat across the width? I think, in any case, I would be inclined to use MRMDF because it’s surface takes smoothness better and obviously obviates any cupping. Do you have thoughts on this please?

Like you in the last forty years I have tried every median of sharpening known to mankind - I think. I started out with float glass and sandpaper as my second choice after oil stones. Both are ok but not great by any means. About three or four thousand dollars later I am now on a grinder and Tormek, CBN wheels, diamond plates and three or four jigs. If you only have a small amount of items to sharpen, then sandpaper and a flat surface is just fine. Maybe add a stropping plate also.

@@andrewpinson1268 thank you Andrew. For me, simplicity will win. Changing blades on my planer/thickener is not easy - so it probably doesn’t get done as often as it should. I too have the Tormek; very good for re-establishing a bevel if damaged; good for woodturning and carving chisels when you use their jigs but I need something between 1000 grit and leather strop. Providing it’s just a hone, generally start the equivalent of 1000 grit; then 4000; then 8000. I’ve got a 15000 grit ceramic stone but seldom use it. What I like about the Grinwood jig is the simplicity and apparent consistency - even more than the (disappointing) Veritas guide and 3M films. I reckon that I could hone that secondary bevel in moments using the Grinwood jig provided the underlying substrate is sufficiently flat: that’s why I wonder if MRMDF ( I only use Medite because it is consistently high quality) would provide that “float glass” flatness with 3m film on top. I guess it will be a case of trying and seeing.

@@theofarmmanager267 like you I’ve tried pretty much everything over the years too, oil stones, sand paper on float glass, sand paper on granite lapping plates, diamond plates, jigs, freehand, etc. The system I’ve settled on now for my both my chisels and my plane blades is a 300/1000 grit diamond plate and 8000 and 12000 grit water stones and a Lie-Nielsen honing guide, which I’ve found far less fiddIy and holds the blade more securely than my Veritas guide. I use the 300 side of the diamond plate to quickly remove any bad dings in the blade and also keep my water stones flat and the 1000 side to start the honing process, go to the 8000 for 10-15 passes and finish with a few passes on the 12000. After the 12000 you better be very careful with it. It’s basically Rob Cosman’s system with the addition of a honing guide and using water stones instead of ceramic stones. The only thing I would consider changing it for would be the Tormek because of ease of use. As for your planer/thicknesser, Look up Byrd tools Shelix cutter head, I converted my 13” Dewalt last year to a Shelix head and it was well worth it.

@@08c6vette that’s very useful. I’m not unhappy with the films: plus side is very little moisture; down side is that I do split them occasionally. But, but ,but, I’ve still got the Waterstones and I could be tempted back. I will look at the Lie Nielsen guide. All of my chisels are ground to 25degrees; most of my planes are 30 degrees and I have made a simple block system which I copied from a Grinwood video on YT at 27 and 32 degrees to refine the secondary bevels. Tormek. I have the T8 which comes with a wheel which you can grind either 250 or 1000 grit. So that wheel can only go to 1000 at best. Perhaps they do other wheels which go finer. I find the Tormek great for getting any dinks out or re-squaring a blade. I only use it for the primary bevel. I will look at that website for spiral cutter. I did ask Axminster a few years ago if they did spiral cutters for my model of trade planer/thicknesser amd they said it wasnt possible. I shall try a third party. Thanks again

@@theofarmmanager267 Films do a great job but they are prone to tearing and get loaded up and wear fairly quickly in my experience. Water stones do too but are quickly returned to flat with a few passes with the 300 diamond plate. I would be willing to bet if you tried the Lie-Nielsen jig in conjunction with a preset block system for your angles, whether with the film or water stones you would never pull the Veritas out again. Think I paid around a $100 bucks for it.

Простите но шляпа, какой смысл был точилом убивать кромку если ты мог ее также проточить на грубой нождачке. Сам точу на самодельной точилке из фанеры и двух подшипников)) шкурке водной которую креплю к полированному керамограниту на пластиковые зажимы за 80 рублей. Поточил снял шкурку промыл под струей воды и нафиг не нужны эти дрова тем более из дуба)) Точит так что кромка зеркало.

That looks like wet/dry sandpaper. Obviously you’re not going the “wet” route as wood is your base. True? Also, the jig doesn’t allow one to use the entire width of the sandpaper. True?
