Additional cues i give for my hook grip is to internally rotate the shoulder a little bit so the thumbs could achieve what you mentioned as parallel to the bar. Also flexing the triceps before pulling will help arms feels longer and solid through the pull. Just my 2 cents, hope it helps, and love your video Bryce!

My double over hand no chalk isn't that much lower than my mixed grip or even straps. But at the start I was always failing because of grip even with mixed grip. Part of it is strengthening the fingers more than the hand which helps as you said it should not be too high in the hand. As well as I found additional grip training to be fun and cool
@marinasarlija84763 жыл бұрын
Finally something that makes sense!!!!!! I can't even tell you how much people were telling me that you can't grip like that! But I found that the barbell keeps on slipping out of the place. Just embracing the fact that I feel more comfortable and stable with the barbell in the first position you mentioned!!! Now I know I'm not crazy lol

@Eddy_BRN5 жыл бұрын
Yo Bryce! I was wondering, and this is the perfect moment. As you say, on your recent heavy deadlifts you're only getting 2 fingers on your thumb. In that video here you're showing that you can squeeze your thumb with 3 fingers. So, why is that? Just rushing a bit too much hook grip setup? / Grip slipping with heavy loads? / Your way of doing it or maybe something else? Because from my point of view and my newbie hook grip experience, I've noticed (and it seems quite logical too) that the grip is way more steady, strong, with 3 fingers instead of 2. Moreover, as you have more thumb surface over the bar with 3 fingers, it results in less thumb pressure for the same force and in the end less pain. Thank you for every friendly-learning videos. And good luck for your current prep.
@calgarybarbell5 жыл бұрын
If you can get 3 on, great. I was just pointing out that the first two do 90% of the gripping.
@JasonAlex19845 жыл бұрын
Starting taking these tips into my deadlifts, specifically using hook group. Went and did 5x5 yesterday t 70% and could only do two sets before thumbs felt destroyed. Should I reduce the weight or reps and is there a schedule you would recommend with adding more weight to it?

Ok so, I'd heard about grabbing the bar at the base of the fingers to avoid ripping calluses, did it for over a year and had no issue with it. Now I had it in my head that that was the common-sense, right way to grip the bar, and that all top powerlifters were doing it. However two weeks ago, I was arguing about it with a friend, who claimed it was better to grip it deeper in the hand and squeeze the bar hard, and that that was the way everyone did it. So I went on KZbin to show him some videos of IPF champions pulling with that finger grip, but to my surprise pretty much everyone grabs the bar way deeper. I decided to give it a go, and it immediately added 10kg to my 1RM that day, and another 7'5kg over the next couple of sessions. So I'm confused about this...🤷 I think my conclusion is that for higher reps the "finger grip" rolls less, is less painful, and doesn't tear my calluses quite as much, but for a heavy single, i find chalking up, grabbing with the whole hand and squeezing hard gives me more confidence and makes the whole thing feel easier That's my 2cents anyway

Something for some people who struggle with hook grip is try to do middle and ring finger. I have no clue why but I struggled with the first two fingers (like most people use), saw a video of someone saying use middle/ring finger. I have had no issues with hook grip since then and it is going on 3-4 years of using it

Do you have any tips for increasing hook grip strength once you have the technique figured out? I have struggled with it since tearing my bicep a year and a half ago. Never been able to hook grip over 585 (and honestly that was slipping at the lockout) whereas I've pulled 700 with straps. I've tried it a bunch of different ways, but it seems like I just need to get stronger. Right now I'm trying to improve it by doing static holds for time (up to 435 for 40 seconds). I'm also trying to do the first rep of my work sets with hook grip before switching to straps when doing lighter volume work. Do I just need to give it more time or is there some other method that would help to make it stronger?
@calgarybarbell5 жыл бұрын
Static holds with as much as you can. Hold the last rep of every set for ~6 seconds. After you’re done deadlifting, bring the weight down and do 1-2 sets of 20sec hold deadlifts
@timk82585 жыл бұрын
@@calgarybarbell Thank so much for the reply! Interesting that you recommend 20 second static holds, I've been doing 30 second holds and trying to increase the time from there but I have been starting to think that's just tearing up my hands more and not really making me stronger for a single rep. I'll try the shorter holds with heavier weight.

What’s the difference between hook and overhand?
@DrAlexStrahle3 жыл бұрын
With a hook grip, your thumb is trapped between your fingers and the bar. The thumb is "hooked" It providers a CW and CCW force so the bar cannot roll out. It's generally announced as the strongest grip, but also the most painful
@gymweeb92295 жыл бұрын
Yeah... hock grip is absolutely impossible for me... People constantly say just get a thinner bar or saying i’m doing it wrong... until they realize that I have super super small hands with short fingers for a 6’2 hands... Makes the penis look bigger though lel
