What struck me about Timothy was his childlike view of the world. He talked to wild animals the way you would expect a child to talk to them, and attribute human qualities to them. Children often do that, they imagine that animals "talk" to each other in their own languages. While animals do communicate, they do not have language in the way that we humans do. He was childlike in the way that he imagined that these wild animals could be his friends, and that they would not harm him because of that. What a brutal awakening that must have been for him. I'm especially sorry for Aimee, his girlfriend, she wanted out of that situation even before she was killed.

That isn't correct...the bear that killed and consumed them definitely saw them as food. He was an older bear, he was in hyperphagia and desperate for calories. Driven by a biological need to get those calories, he definitely saw them as a food source. This is what bears do. Bears are opportunistic and he didn't have to expend too many valuable calories by killing a human because it's so easy for him to do that and it was right in front of him. The bear was simply trying to survive. It's a tremendous tragedy that two majestic bears had to be shot because of this. Timothy said he'd die to protect the bears; instead, he got two of them killed.

Absolute truth! Timothy was a failed human being who was putting the bears' lives and their programmes lives at risk by interfering with the hunting and gathering that was required for them to put on enough fat to survive the winter. Timothy's strange delusions got two of those bears outright murdered, and he put the whole club's future at risk by jeopardizing the reproductive adults lives. It is too bad Timothy didn't spend his time in a library, arcade or casino and leave the bears in peace. He might have even met a human friend or two. 🤔

He was Bipolar Manic Depressive - diagnosed and given medication that would have balanced out his high/low pendulum swings but he refused to take the prescription. Many bipolars go through this exact same thing. Also a large percentage of bipolars have additional diagnoses like OCD or other behavioral disorders. They don't think there is anything wrong with them. They think they are just really upbeat sometimes and really want to sleep for several days and nights after that. They do however often self medicate with alcohol or other drugs. His girlfriend was tragic. She wanted to leave, couldn't stand being around the bears and was generally scared stupid most of the time. I honestly don't understand why the many authorities who continued trying to get him to change his behavior didn't just take him in on a 5150 and hold him for the required 72 hours when he could have been observed and medicated and hopefully that break in the hard core mood swings would have been enough to possibly get him balanced out. In my opinion he needed to be in an institution.

Well monohawk you are absolutely right about him being bipolar now,my ex girlfriend was exactly the same way when she went off of her meds now to.this guy needed to be admitted somewhere where he could get him some treatment for his mental health problems and conditions by far.if that had happened then this would not have happen and you and I would not be talking right now about it.and his so called girlfriend would have been alive right now to.my ex girlfriend when she went off of her meds all she wanted to do was clean her house back then from top to bottom with everything just plan spick and span.and then she would start the same thing over again after she had just finished up cleaning it.she did drink beer from the first thing when she wolk up until she went to bed day in and day out.with a cigarette in her mouth ever second.and she was just plan gorgeous and beautiful to,and ever body that knew her called her ol crazy tammy now.but when I got of our relationship because of this she would get on some big 1,2 and 3 week benders and call me to come and get her.and just because I was a friend still I did and took her back home.and then she wanted me to help her into her shower to get cleaned up,then set her fan by her bed so she could run it and not hear nothing, and then dress her for bed.then turn the bed down with all her meds on her night stand with a big glass of water and then she wanted me to lock her bedroom door and her front door to so she could sleep for sometimes days at a time.and then about a week later she would call me and think me for helping her out.i was just about the only one that she ever trusted and still does.but we live almost 50 miles apart now and don't see each other that offen any more.but she still calls me ever now and then.but being bipolar like she was is exactly the same way that this guy is acting.like tammy she needed someone around her that she could be with and talk to just the way he probably did with him now dead girlfriend.to me someone should have put a stop to this guys stupidity along time ago at least maybe him and her would be still alive today now!!!!!

Please don’t lump Dian Fossey in the same category as Timothy Treadwell. They couldn’t have been more different. Dian was a zoologist, primatologist, conservationist, researcher, and writer. She did everything she could, including things she shouldn’t have done, to save the mountain gorillas. She, along with Jane Goodall and Birute Galdikas, did groundbreaking research of the great apes and are known as the foremost experts on mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans. When Dian was in the field, there were 240 mountain gorillas left. Today there are about 1,000 and much of that success goes right back to the methods Dian Fossey originated to study different groups and habituate individuals, which opened the door for how the gorillas are managed today. Dian was a trailblazer and an amazing woman. She wasn’t killed by the gorillas, and neither were both Joy and George Adamson, who made famous Born Free, killed by the animals they studied. Joy worked with lions, a leopard, and a cheetah but was never harmed by any of them. George devoted his life to lions but was not killed by lions. Human beings killed Dian, Joy, and George, not animals. What Timothy was doing was not even close to this kind of serious study, research, and writing, and he had no qualifications to speak of to do anything at all with grizzly bears. His accomplishment was that he got two grizzly bears killed. BTW, nobody is creepier than the coroner.

Herzog's "Into the Abyss" is a gem. In the center of this piece are 2 young men, both convicted on all 3 counts of 2nd degree murder one on death row, the other in prison for life but around these main characters are a lot of others and interviews with families, police, especially the correctional officers one in particular whose perspective evolved on what he could no longer do after a decade. But it's all fascinating and very moving too. Texas. I'd love to hear your discussion on this documentary...

I really enjoyed this review, it was very well thought out and great to watch. I agreed with everything you guys said, but I do not think the tape should be destroyed. Timothy spent years with these animals, and he clearly loved them deeply. But he definitely was NOT safe, after all he literally stopped carrying bear spray a few months before his death. I feel as if the tape should be released so everyone can understand why as much as they love the wild, we CANNOT forget our humanity. Just because he was there for 13 years, doesn’t mean any difference to that hungry bear. I think this tape should be released as a cautionary tale. Something tells me Timothy would not want anyone else to go through a death as brutal and painful as his was, no matter how much he loved them.

I don’t think you can compare the two. Steve Irwin probably took a lot of safety precautions. He would never say to a fly “don’t do that while I’m here. Have some respect” he respected nature. I feel bad that this man had mental health struggles, but I hope this is a cautionary tale for others. I also struggle with anxiety and mental health, and I found a love for hiking. So I understand how being in nature is healing, therapeutic etc. I have heard he was a recovering addict. However nature will always win. You have to respect boundaries.

No way of knowing, but I took the notes as people simply trying to reach out to a man running around hiding in plain sight around them letting him know they meant no harm. Perhaps scared of the crazy guy and trying to diffuse the situation. This becomes clearer if you read the books "Grizzly Maze" or "Death in the Grizzly Maze"

Since they found the girlfriend buried, that means that the bears buried her, in an attempt to save her. for later consumption. Obviously, the bears were full from eating Timothy. smh Sadly, he went there to save the bears, but they ended up killing him and his girlfriend. As a result, those bears had to be killed. Talk about irony. Timothy may have loved wild animals, but he didn’t quite understand them or respect them for what they are, WILD animals. He's a fascinating person to watch because of the way he's a living breathing contradiction of himself in every way and it's sad but fascinating. I do wonder what his thoughts would be about this documentary to be honest. I imagine he would hate the world having seen the take after take after take and all the Captain Bear poses and think he'd be embarrassed - maybe angrier than when that fox nicked his hat and legged it. He seemed careful to conceal the fact he'd been hand feeding the foxes even though he clearly had cos they never came near without mouthing and nipping at his fingers. Made me wonder how much he tried kidding even himself about what the relationship was with these animals. The wild lighting fast mood swings were so sudden and raging they were gold. Hey...hey I love you. Yes, yes I love you” Three seconds later “Hey. Hey GIMME MY FUCKING HAT THAT'S MY FUCKING HAT!!!!!!!!” Then he breaks his heart over a bee that was doing his thing, busy as a bee... and then it died. It's beautiful it's tragic it's saaaaaddd... Oh. Oh - he's sleeping?!" He'd actually spent thirteen summers out there but was flummoxed, bereft and baffled by a bee I had to stifle the laughter in the cinema cos everyone else seemed to be appreciation the moment and beauty. Made those weird squeaky sounds when you're trying to contain howling laughter “Little fucker is having a kip... he's getting out the bugle and playing the Last Post it's a bee!" In all seriousness though Timothy flouted every rule, deliberately ignored and went out of his way to be a pain in his arse and placed the animals at more risk because of his constant petulant carrying on. I agree and have no desire whatsoever to hear that audio but did read the notes, drawings and reports from the site and it was a horrible, absolutely terrifying ending for Amy. Wasn't a pleasant picnic for Tim but that poor lass suffered. Can't like nor dislike him I just have a sense he was misguided, genuine but a tormented soul that had a lot of shit going on I don't think he'd have made him peace with if he had lived another 40yrs. Roll the credits and play the carefully chosen music that captures him best.. *Yooodup-poooooooduphooo*

When a shark mistakes a person for food, they usually bite them once and then swim off, because they realize the person wasn’t a seal or whatever they thought they were. This bear ripped Timothy apart and kept eating him, and then did the same thing to his girlfriend. The bear didn’t mistake them for food. They were food.

I listened to the audio on youtube. I think people need to hear it cause theres a lot of people that still think like him and believe bears are living Teddys. Life isnt a Disney cartoon. Timothy was arrogant, so much so he had no tact when he verbally badmouthed wildlife specialists at that park who warned him of the dangers of staying after summer. No weapons either, not even in case of emergencies, even for his girlfriend. RIP Darwin Award OCT 2003

In some ways... this is no different than people that do extreme activities. The sky divers that wear those squirrel looking suits.(forgive me, the name of the sport escapes me) They have an extremely high mortality rate, even admitting most of them will die doing so. Or just regular sky divers. Or, those people that climb buildings with no chord to sky dive off or just to climb. They all do extreme things jeopardizing their lives. It’s insane to those who would never do it for fear of dying. Those who choose that lifestyle feel they’re not living unless they’re risking their lives. You feel more alive when you’re continuously risking death.

Dancing bears were primarily in India & Nepal. The practice has been virtually eradicated in India by a joint effort between Free the Bears (Australian-based) and IAR (International Animal Rescue). It's nice to know there are success stories. Basically, they went to bear owners (I hate the idea of someone "owning" an animal that should be free) & said, Give us your bear and we will help you find another means of livelihood. Then those poor bears get to live out their days in peace in a rehab center & sanctuary with other bears.

Everyone’s comments about Timothy Treadwell on any website is all the same negative mumbo jumbo about him. We all know what was evident about him, yet people continue with their righteous hateful opinions of him. What I would like to see is never before footage of him and/or more details about his death. I don’t think the audio tape should be destroyed & I would totally listen to it if I could. I don’t know why everyone insists that he was gay/bi whatever when he clearly states out of his own mouth recorded for national TV that he was straight & liked women. I know men who ‘sound’ gay, but are not! This is so very annoying of stereotypical people! I will say thanks for clarifying the whole ‘white elephant’ metaphor that had always confused me lol. I have the utmost sympathy & admiration of TT. He’s totally someone I would have liked to have known in RL.

I figured the audio would be at the end, I would've turned it off it they had included it. After getting to know Timothy, I just wouldn't be able to hear that again. Not making any judgement on if he was right or wrong to do what he did, or if he deserved it or not, all that aside, he was a human being that I now knew something about there's no way I can listen to that again. Which from what I hear was no comfort to him as he was being mauled to death. Nor was it for his companion, who got to see it happen to him before it happened to her. Think about that. His experience with these animals was merely an object lesson in what NOT to do in the wild. Sure he got some good video, but it wasn't of any scientific value at all. Just that if you are (most likely) feeding a bunch of bears in the season where food is already plentiful, they might tolerate you--but you'd be a fool to count on it. When food gets scarce, they are just as likely to fkn kill you.
