Free Western Series: Bonanza - Episode 124 - The Way of Aaron - Adam helps a beautiful woman, and her father, a peddler of devout Jewish faith.
The Way of Aaron
Director: Murray Golden
Writer: Raphael Blau (as Raphael D. Blau)
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 10 March 1963 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Aaron, a peddler, makes a sales call at the Ponderosa. He is accompanied by his lovely daughter, Rebecca. Adam and Rebecca are immediately attracted to one another, and Adam contrives to meet with Rebecca again on the peddler's return visit. After they leave, he talks with Ben about arranging a party at the Ponderosa to help Rebecca meet others in the area. Ben agrees, and Adam rides off to carry the invitation to Rebecca in person. Meanwhile, Aaron and his daughter have stopped on the trail for the night in order to prepare for the Sabbath. Adam is impressed when he learns that Aaron is a devout practitioner of his Jewish faith. Unfortunately, two outlaws have been stalking the peddler. He and his daughter are in grave danger unless Adam can help them. Written by Charles Delacroix on IMDb.com
Reviews:
"The Cartwrights deal with an itinerant peddler Ludwig Donath and his daughter Aneta Corseaut traveling through the west. It's something that the Cartwrights and the other folks in the Virginia City area have never dealt with before.
Donath is a kind man, but a strict Sabbath observing Jew and keeps Corseaut on a strong leash. He has a right to be concerned as a couple of prairie toughs have the two picked out for a robbery. He has to be rich, you know those people.
Pernell Roberts has something of an interest, but given her strong faith and her father's you know it's not in the cards.
A nice performance by Ludwig Donath best remembered as Al Jolson's father in The Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

Goodness gracious - Pernell was so, SO handsome. ❤😫 Adam and Rebecca had great chemistry, I would’ve liked to see a part two of this episode! They would’ve been a very cute match. Really wish the writers would’ve allowed these characters to grow, marry and mature as time moved on. Anyway, I really enjoyed this one - despite the abrupt ending! 😊

The verse in Numbers 6: 23-24 is possibly the oldest known prayer in the Bible. It was found written on an ancient rolled silver scroll that had to be scanned with modern tech because it could not be unrolled without destroying it . The scroll is older than the Dead Sea scrolls. It is Thousands of years old. And here it is, recited on a tv western from the 1960s and I am watching it in 2023. Hearing it now in these trying times brings some peace to me. It has once again touched my heart and soul. Thank you.

The Shalom of Shabbat was pretty much shattered at that point. But there's no use getting so upset about it. Aaron Kaufman and his daughter were lovely, thoroughly likeable, and Adam at his restrained and charming best. The actor playing Kaufman was superb. Also the sales interchange with Mrs Cardiff further demonstrated the admirable character of the Kaufmans. Ben Cartright was at his fatherly, gracious host best.

I loved watching the Jewish Sabath ceremony and the blessing of his daughter. So wonderful that they show all the wonderfulness of this culture. The acceptance and beauty. And of course the courage of the old man when his daughter was threatened. And a joy seeing Adam outfox the bad guys with his message about the gun! 😄💖👍🐴

I've been watching Bonanza on KZbin 2 - 3 times a week for a few weeks now. I used to watch it on tv some 50 years or so ago, but not much in the time between. Every episode I've seen in these few weeks has been excellent: some deep, some ahead of their time or pushing the boundaries of it, some very moving, some exciting and never without at least some humor. So anytime now that I'm in the mood to watch Bonanza, I don't have to wonder if I will like the episode, I know I will.

Adam, I believe was the one who broke up the show. He fancied himself a serious actor and writer and wanted more. After Hoss died, and Adam wanted to leave the show couldn't go on with just one son.

@@ppumpkin3282 I think Pernell Roberts was jealous of the others. All were fabulous actors but Michael Landon wrote and directed too. He had huge talent. I had a girl crush on Pernell in the old days. My sister fancied Michael. Looking back now the father and Hoss had great appeal too. I'm rewatching lots (I watched tons about 10 years ago too). One can get lost in these with such good acting. It takes worries away for a while. The house was so nice. Funny thinking Pernell was a Sunday school teacher when young.

@@ppumpkin3282 Pernell didn't break up the show, he left in 1965 after his 6 year contract ended, the others re- signed but Pernell didn't. He was a "Serious Actor" and a trained actor, the others weren't . The promises that were made by Dortort the Producer to enhance the characters didn't materialise and Pernell after trying to approach Dortort and getting nowhere completed his contract and left! He never wanted to be a writer and he never did write! Bonanza continued without him for another 8 years but after Dan Blocker (Hoss) died in 1972 the show went downhill...Pa and 1 son left to carry the show didn't work so they brought in other actors but the show was doomed without Hoss and ended a year later.

I like seeing Adam excited about a woman, especially one who is deserving of his attentions; she's demure, yet feisty when necessary. You go Helen Crump! Of course, nothing became of it, but at least she wasn't harmed in any way. And really though, when I think about everything this show offers, I don't blame Adam for leaving. He is my favorite Cartwright and now I see why, because he and I think alike. This show wasn't really progressing the family. Over six seasons the writers couldn't come up with a script that would allow these grown men to have a significant relationship outside of their immediate family....not one of them! Make me think the writers had something against men and women being together. It's just weird.

Adam with an ivory colored shirt and not wearing a hat is a rare sight. Rebecca is played by Aneta Corsaut who played Andy Taylor's girlfriend Helen Crump on "The Andy Griffith Show."

The episode is terrific. But the main premise has nothing to do with reality. The father would certainly have wanted his daughter to marry a scholar. But above all - and nothing else matters by comparison - he would have wanted her to marry a Jewish man. (Of course, that could have been Lorne Greene or Michael Landon, the actors, both of whom were Jewish). Also entirely unrealistic is her anger at her father, even taking him to task for not responding to the robbery the way others would have. No observant Jew would break the Sabbath in such an instance. And if this were real life, she would have known that. Finally, her taking him to task for not being like others would have been the height of disrespect.

Guest Star Aneta Corsaut (1933-1995), as Rebecca Kaufman in this 1063 Bonanza Episode, also made her first appearance, as Helen Crump (Sheriff Taylor's girlfriend), in the Andy Griffith Show, that very same year.

"Early One Morning", the song Adam sings on the Bonanza Party album and in an earlier episode, and also featured in episode 122 The Actress, originates in various forms from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and was popular in the mid 19th century.

There’s a lot of wonderful people out there but they don’t talk like this. Entertainment has made them sound like troublemakers by talking tough like the actors today. Even when their being nice their voice sounds like that. But listen to those voices. They’ve been influencing the people to talk like bad guys. Brad Pitt Richard Gere and the rest of them can’t hold a candle to Adam when it comes to charming a lady.

Pernell (aAdam) Robert's was a most intelligent Actor, Singer and improvisor;from my home town Waycross, Ga. Was interested in the true original Native Hebrew Tongue spake by Creator Heavenly Father YAHWEH, whom has never identified Himself as a God , but rather as our Heavenly Father and most important gave His 7th day Sabbath (sundown 6th day until sundown 7th day) as a perpetual Covenant with mankind to mark (Seal) in an unbreakable Contract. So yes the true Sabbath is most seminal and Adam was wise in that respect, in my humble opinion.
